he beat eric cantor. this titan of republican politics. in eric cantor's home district. kicked him out of congress. and that in a strange way is how we got to today. because we now know that had eric cantor won that election, had he been able to win over those people in that ballroom, had he held on to his seat against that no-name upstart college professor, today eric cantor would be speaker of the house. he'd be third in line to the presidency. he'd be the leader of congress. he'd be the second most powerful person in washington after the president himself. had eric cantor not been primaried out of his seat, the next thing that would have happened after eric cantor got re-elected to congress that yeah, had that happened, the next thing that would have happened is john boehner would have announced he was stepping down as speaker, that the time had come to put eric cantor in that job. that is what was supposed to happen last year. that is what as going to happen last year. and eric cantor had by now, had that all happened, eric cantor would be well into his first year as

and there's no world in which john boehner, eric cantor and kevin mccarthy are somehow too liberal to lead house republicans. so, you know, thanks, mr. president. joining me now, kristina belltran, professor of social and cultural analysis at nyu, robert george editor at the new york post. grace main, democrat representing new york's sixth district and julian zelozar, public affairs at princeton university and the author of "the fierce urgency of now." okay. so let me start with you, congresswoman. you actually work in this maddening little location down there in d.c. what do you see as kind of the root causes of the particular leadership chaos? >> i was fortunate enough to have a front row seat to all the chaos that was going on in washington, d.c., and it was truly amazing and almost historical week. i think it's really just emblematic about something that has been happening and has continually been bubbling up. the stagnancy caused by the members, the freedom caucus members who essentially even in the pledge for what they want the next speaker to adhere to, one of the lines is to l

my only caution is when you lose the majority leader, eric cantor then you lose the speaker, john boehnerarthy, can't put together a majority, there's a problem that's bigger than a personality. my only advice to paul would be go slow. make sure the conference talks to itself enough before they hire somebody they know what they want in the job. any person who rushes in without fixing that underlying problem is going to end up in the same difficulty as john boehner within three or four weeks. >> callista, as the wife of the former speaker, do you want him to be the speaker again? >> i worked on the hill if more years. i loved the house representative as an institution. i think both of us are committed citizens. it's unlikely that newt will become speaker. i think he'll be able to help moving forward. >> both you have have brand new books out. you're both prolific in this. >> we had no idea we would be bringing out a book about terrorism. the very same month that hillary clinton will testify front of the benghazi committee. as you know from your hometown area we have somali american who is

you had an upheaval of your own so you have experience with this when you beat eric cantor in the state of virginia. a lot of people were surprised but not your supporters. what's going on in this case? >> it's a hard challenge. someone has to get to 218 votes. the conference was moving in great direction. john boehner stepped down. all members can bring bills to the floor and there's no retribution. then this election was sprung kind of early by the speaker. that brought an end to the process. >> it's interesting that you talk about that because the person that you supported in the freedom caucus yesterday was congressman daniel webster and say that's what he would plan to do. he would spread out the power so every member of the house felt powerful. >> right. that's what i ran on. i ran on those principles myself. he ran the florida house in a fair way that had positive results. there's the story about 30 or 40 of us who are challenging the conference. that's a false narrative. just last week you can see the true numbers. 153 republicans voted against the c.r. that's the true number. >
