. >> host: eric draper this photo? >> guest: at air force one navy machine, it's basically a flying whitehouse and this is the conference room aboard air force one and the president literally took almost anything aboard the plane including preparing for a speech. he has got the teleprompter and the mock podium and the president would exercise on air force one. it was really -- it never got old. i felt very blessed to be able to see the world aboard that plane. >> host: here is a photo, january 2009. >> guest: yes, the president in the oval office. this was after the election, so obama, president obama hadn't been sworn in yet and there was a meeting in the oval office and a lunch with the five presidents. definitely a rare opportunity to see a lot of history all in one room. >> host: have you ever counted up how many people up in the same room as those five presidents? >> guest: know so is very special. >> host: back to george h.w. and barbara bush. a lot of photos of them in here as well including one of barbara bush

. >> eric draper was the chief white house photographer for the bush presidency.of the almost 1 million pictures he took. >> we developed a really good rapport over the years to where he really didn't have to say anything to me. really it was seamless because i spent so much time with him. >> 9/11, draper was in the holding room in that florida school after the president learned of the attack and started drafting his statement to the nation. >> he picked up a notepad and started writing notes. he never looked up, and it wasn't until several minutes later and they're replaying the images of the video of flight 177 and hitting the south tower, and for the first time, the president turns and sees that image that's burned into everyone's memory. >> later in his private cabin on air force one, the president talks with his chief of staff. >> the president really wanted to return to washington, and he was frustrated because basically andy card was saying that it couldn't happen, that it wasn't safe. >> mr. bush follows events from his office on the plane. >> the presiden

white house photographer eric draper served with president george w.apturing some of the most powerful images and people in the world. his new book is aptly titled "front row seat." he is with me now from santa fe, new mexico. eric, it's good to see you. >> great to be here. thank you, craig. >> what a kind of personal connection does a white house photographer develop with the president? >> well, first of all, president bush knew exactly the role of my job as the white house five e photographer around that was to be present not only during the official doubt tats of the presidency but also to document the personal side of the presidency. and over time, you develop a very close relationship. i spent a lot of time with the president. very long days and i was always around. i was always there. >> and i also understand, there is an interesting story behind how you became white house photographer for george w. bush. what's that story? >> well, my background -- i was a staff photographer with the associated press and i was assigned to cover the bush campaig

eric draper captured many iconic photographs on display inside the bush presidential library and therefor that. eric spent eight years as the president's white house photographer. he will be unveiling new images at tomorrow's dedication. he has a new book out, front row seat, a photographic portrait of the presidency of george w. bush. eric joins us live from dallas with a look at some of these photographs. eric, in light of what we've all been through over the last week or so with the boston terror attacks the image of the president standing with the bullhorn at ground zero right after 9/11 is an image i'm sure all of our viewers remember. we really saw it through your eyes. tell us a little bit about this image and what it was like for you being there. >> well, this particular day, september 14th, just three days after the 9/11 attacks, the day started out in washington. we traveled to ground zero. it was a very emotional day. it was a roller-coaster. the president toured ground zero and it was, it was a disaster zone. i mean, you can still feel the heat, smoldering from the fires. t
