eric fisher is chief meteorologist with our station wbz. eric why this chill? >> well, jeff, we've got what we call a high amplitude pattern, with extremes on both the warm and cold side. on the cold side a huge area below average temperatures expected starting tomorrow and lasting much of the work week. warm air across the pacific northwest with 80s and 90 in places like seattle. now you look at tuesday's highs 50s and 60s across the great lakes and midwest, those are the high temperatures and even 70s all the way 6down through oklahoma and north texas. overnight lows 30s and 40s are possible here. so some furnaces may click on in what is usually the hottest time of the whole year. now when you bring in the colder air with hot summer like air you have thunderstorms. there is a severe risk for this evening. tomorrow that will shift just a little farther toward the east. so from the tennessee valley, mid mississippi right on to the mid-atlantic and toward new york city, could see some damaging wind gusts, some large hail, pretty vigorous thunderstorms and all al

. >>> meteorologist eric fisher of our boston affiliate wbz has been tracking hurricane arthur. >> well, we have a hurricane -- significant hurricane making landfall in the outer banks. arthur is the first hurricane of category 2 strength or stronger that's made landfall in the united states since all the way back in 2008. so the strongest storm in terms of wind making landfall in the u.s. since ike in 2008. it will continue to move across the outer banks during the overnight hours and move to open water by the end of the day today. it would be just off the delmarva peninsula. spend some time over open water on friday but then comes very close to the southern new england coastline. a track that takes it just off the east and south of nantucket it should start to weaken to a category 1. in terms of that wind field, bring the hurricane force winds across the outer bangs. could be some significant damage left over because of that. then the wind field is over open water during the day friday night into saturday morning. this is where the tropical storm force winds should be coming across ca

meteorologist eric fisher of our boston station wbz is tracking the storm. >> well, here's a look at arthur. the storm has been strengthening over the last 24 hours and has begun its jog off to the north. we'll see impacts as we head through to "today." making landfall across the outer banks. as a category 1, there's an outside chance it could become a category two. we head to friday morning, it will be off to the delmarva peninsula and friday night, this is where it makes another close pass to land, nantucket. that will bring stormy winds to massachusetts before it moves out to the north and east and to the canadian maritime. hurricane warnings are up. here's the reason why. the wind field of arkansas thundershower as it works its way off to the north brings the tropical winds ashore but overnight brings the hurricane winds across the outer banks. and another shot of it across feast massachusetts, that on friday night. in terms of any storm surge from this particular storm, anywhere from coastal georgia to coastal south carolina, a surge up to three feet. we could see it up to four

eric fisher is chief meteorologist at our cbs boston station wbz. eric, what's arthur up to? >> reporter: well, scott, good evening arthur has been intensifying throughout the day, just shy of hurricane status, winds at 70 miles per down, pressure down to 992 millibars just off the coast of northeastern florida. here is the important track of arthur over the next couple of days. now as we head through tomorrow afternoon right about 2 p.m. located just offshore of wilmington, north carolina, by the overnight hours likely making landfall over the outer banks as it works its way off to the north and east an begins to curve. now as we head toward friday night into saturday, a very close path to new england passing just about 50 to 100 miles to the southeast of nantucket before it races off toward the canadian maritime as a category 1 hurricane. in terms of rainfall this will be an impact. heavy rainfall near the coast and north and south carolina an as well across much of new england, parts of new york state and new jersey flash flooding a threat there. in terms of storm surge, t

chief meteorologist eric fisher of cbs station wbz says conditions will get rough never just hours. y will. we have a new advisory in from the national hurricane scepter just a couple of seconds ago. arthur continues to strengthen. the winds have increased. the pressure is down to .983. it's strengthening as a category 1. you always want to prepare for the worst-case scenario. close look, you see the center of circulation. the eye of the storm and the eye wall rotating arounde it. hurricane warnings are up from surf city to the virginia border with tropical storm warnings on either side of that. the track does bring it over the outer banks. it should make landfall as a category 1 or plan for the worst, category two storm. passing about 100 to 150 miles southeast of nantucket. close enough to bring some impact in the form of rain to southern new england. in terms of wind, tropical force winds coming to shore this weekend. crossing the outer banks tonightnd a chance for tropical force winds into cape cod and nantucket. right when you don't want it on a holiday week. >> absolutely. eric
