eric fisher is chief meteorologist at our cbs station in boston. eric, what can we expect? >> reporter: well, scott, for a lot of folks who are hoping maybe winter would come late this year, that is not going to be the case. nuri as a super typhoon is no more. now a storm similar to an east coast nor'easter, wind gusts approaching 100 miles per hour noalaska. that sends a jolt of energy to the jet stream and buckles. basically you get a large ridge over the west coast with warm and dry air and a huge area of cold air coming straight down out of arctic, high pressure you would you werely see in the middle of february. snow is going to come along with this. the spots that need to watch montana, a stripe of snow stretching across the midwest into the great lakes, plus upslope snow moving into the denver area early next week. slowly it will seep its way southward, and by wednesday we're look at high temperatures during the day in teens and 20s, and scott by the end of the week, affecting pretty much every state from the continental divide to the atlantic ocean. >> pelley: eric

's keeping an eye out across southern georgia into southeastern south carolina and coastal north carolina, potential for a couple pore tornadoes if damaging wind gusts. this storm is moving its way to the north, toward the midwest and a lot of wind, cold on the backside, snow around for monday here. especially across the upper midwest with temperatures pushing the 60s along the east coast. >> speaking of the east coast, then the storm that might make a mess of things just before thanksgiving. >> yeah, this will be the big story over the next couple of days, watching a developing storm along the coast. 95 corridor. at the moment looks like it will hug the coastline, heavy rain, wind, near the coast on wednesday, busy travel day. but jeff, we're also watchin

and now says meteorologist eric fisher of our boston station wbz, a new storm is brugge, this one in the northwest. >> we've been watching the snow fall in the last couple of days but now the northwest is getting in on the system. it's going to bring a wintry mix especially into oregon, southern washington and spreading across idaho as we head through our thursday. so watch out for some very dangerous travel. it's not purely snow but rain and sleet mixed in all the way through the portland area. it continues to work its way eastward where it's been brutally pulled to more snow. we see the purple showing up around the cascades and wyoming range. we could see a foot over the highest peeks. another place to watch snow, the peeks. those are lake effect belts and we'll be seeing 3 to 6 inches of snowfall. a plateau around erie, p.a. picking up snow. >>> in terms of temperatures it is cold all over, if you want warmth, go to phoenix or central and south florida, and that will be it for your thursday. the weekend outlook, only slightly warmer than average part of the country looks to be the

meteorologist eric fisher of our boston station wbz is following the fast-moving storm. >> we've been talking about it for a couple of days, and now it's a storm. it's a quick moving one but impacting us right through the holiday, and it's changing plans, and we've seen that already. so moving up the east coast as we head through the morning, by the time we get toward 9:00 a.m. on wednesday, we're looking at heavy snow west of i-95. that will be stretching p to the suburbs outside of new york city. east of i-95 you've got heavy rainfall and wind. and, of course, it's sloppy and quite a bit of impact. heading into the evening, heavier snow from the philadelphia area, westchester county reaching up across connecticut into boston and new england. so by midnight toward the predawn hours the last of the snow will be exiting maine. we have winter storm warnings extending from maine right on down into north carolina. so a big portion of the east coast all impacted again. that's where the biggest snow totals are going to be. looking at a widespread 6 to 10, at times as much as 12 inches of sn

meteorologist eric fisher of our boston station wbz says it's triggering the weather. >> at one point we were tracking a typhoon, a super typhoon named nuri. it doesn't look like much but what was a beautiful typhoon is now weakening. however a lot of the moisture is moving to the north. that's where it hits the jet stream and then it explodes over the weekend. we'll have the giant storm system in the state. 50-foot-tall waves, weekend gusts of hurricane strength, and we'll have an impact on our weather in the united states. it helps to buckle the jetstream. a huge ridge over the west. it will bring warm and dry weather to. the east of that a huge dip in the jet stream. it's going to take over all of the united states with some of the coldest and a taste of winter for a lot of folks. it really starts on monday. by tuesday, lots of highs in the 20s and 30s. you'll feel it first in the front rage of the plains. by the end of the week, the entire eastern united states with a feeling of winter, and, yes, snow will be coming along with this. i'm meteorologist eric fisher for cbs news. >>>

meteorologist eric fisher of our boston station wbz says another storm is on tap for thursday. >> it'seally been a surreal scene around buffalo, especially just south of town. and this is the perfect setup for a huge lake-effect snowstorm. we've got mild lake temperatures. and mild this time of the year means mid-40s, but we've got air moving over the lake that's in the teens. really cold air both on the surface and aloft. and the winds haven't changed direction. that's the key. when you have winds persist eptly, especially right along that long fetch of the lake, it grabs the moisture. there's instability there. and it just dumps it downstream. and if those winds don't change direction, you can add huge totals, in this case up to 70 inches of snow. we're talking six feet. this is not the only event we'll be seeing. the snow shifting northward this morning. as we head toward the end of the week, especially on thursday, another lake-effect snow event. we could see another feet in the buffalo area. a lot of these same towns could be approaching 100 inches of snow for the week as a whole.

. >> meteorologist eric fisher of our boston station wbz said that the bitter cold and heavy snow isn't going away anytime soon. >> scenes of winter all over the place working its arctic way through. snowstorms continue through the u.p. of michigan as we go through this morning and into the afternoon. this is where the biggest snow totals will be for tuesday. lake-effect will enhance the snowfall as we head this afternoon and tonight. that's where the biggest totals are going to be. with some spots close to a foot as we get close to the upper peninsula. this is where the most difficult travel will be for today. now, in terms of the cold, our winter advisories and windchills, montana, wyoming, windchills as low as 35 below zero over the next couple of days. in terms of high temperatures, just the air looking at single digits, billings and cheyenne. denver a little warm. probably staying in the teens there. in fact, the temperatures take four degrees, five degrees off. probably going to be the actual high. on wednesday, continue to watch the air move its way eastward. 30s for the high in

eric fisher is the chief meteorologist at wbz, our station in boston. eric, what are you seeing out there? >> scott, this has been a tremendous week for cold. a lot of places facing frigid temperatures they haven't seen in over 100 years this early in the season. this morning was the coldest yet. 75% of the lower 48 was below freezing to kick off their friday. it was warmer in barrow, alaska, this afternoon. the place only sees two hours of sunlight this year, than in indianapolis. only reached 30 for a high temp. in bozeman, montana, their high is 46. more snow this weekend. not too heavy across the midwest. 2 to 4 inch snow totals. the lake effect machine keeps chugging. the next big blast is coming down starting sunday. highs in the teens in the upper midwest. monday, the cold continues to dig farther south. this will reach farther south than the last cold outbreak we're ok in. tuesday, teens in the upper midwest, 20s in kentucky and highs in the mid 40s to the florida panhandle. >> pelley: and not even winter yet. thank you very much. parts of the w
