>> pelley: eric fisher, wbz. eric, thanks very much. that section of an airplane wing that washed up on a french eeland in the indian ocean this week was flown to france today to determine if it is, as suspected, from the malaysian airline jet that vanished last year. jonathan vigliotti is on reunion island. >> reporter: covered in barnacles, the wing fragment, called a flaperon, was wrapped and sealed, bound for france in the hope it may finally unlock the mystery of the missing airliner. since the discovery was made here on the french island of reunion, france will now take a leading role in the investigation, joining malaysia and australia. island resident johnny begue found the wreckage. he also discovered a ripped suitcase which was sent to france, too. reunion is famous for its black, volcanic beaches and today a volcano sent lava and smoke spewing in the air, slowing the search for other debris. the flaperon helps keep the plane level when it starts to land. it's made from highly buoyant material filled with air pockets, which ma

chief meteorologist eric fisher of our boston station wbz has more on erika and three big storms in the pacific. >> reporter: well, erika dissipated over the weekend, but still a lot of tropical moisture and it being focused along a weak front here and along the coastal areas wchl that a lot of heavy rainfall expected through monday. a widespread 2 to 4 inches possible with all those downpours and storms but some local totals could be over 5 inches of rain ail the way to charleston, north carolina, and that's where we could have a higher risk of flash flooding. three major hurricanes east of the dateline from kilo to ignacio to jimena. meanwhile in the lower 48, the week is about the warmth in the east. well above average temperatures. it looks like summer is going to hold on strong. a lot of 80s and 90s. new york stock exchange, up to 90 monday and tuesday. more of that later this week. i'm eric fisher for cbs news. >>> more residents in central oregon are being told to evacuate as firefighters battle a group of raging wildfires. the fires cover 150 square miles, more than three dozen

meteorologist eric fisher of our cbs station wbz says erika is on track to menace florida and southeast. >> we continue to watch erika's progress. already brought flooding rain into the leeward islands. it continues to work its way west as we head through the 234ek9 to 36 hours. tropical storms out for puerto rico, the dominican republic, as well as the turks and caicos and now also parts of the bahamas. here's a look at the track. that could actually really bring down the intensity of the storm. very mountainous terrain, tends to destroy tropical systems if they go right over the top of it but it could reorganize it and takes a packet right up the eastern coast of florida and the southeastern coast of the united states. at that point it could be a hurricane, perhaps a stronger hurricane if it can survive that trip. to the mountainous terrain of hispaniola. a lot of very warm water here, well up into the 80s. in terms of the steering currents, it's parallel to the coast so it could be several days before it tracks up florida and any of those states. we'll be monitoring erika carefully o

for more on all of this rewith join the by eric fisher chief meteorologist in our boston station wbz. eric, what are you looking at? >> reporter: we're watching this trp call moisture from northward. though it is not organized, a lot of that moisture meeting up with a frontal boundary focus the tropical moisture into heavy rainfall. flash mooding-- flash flooding. the main issue across georgia and through south carolina. local totals could be over five inches of rain and that is why we are concerned with those areas. in the pas civic something never observed before. we saw three major hurricanes all spinning at once east of the "dateline", only impact here rough surf for hawaii, especially the northern shore. so good news on that front. meanwhile on the lower 48, this week is about the heat. some are holding on 80s, 90s, for much of the midwest, northeast, 90s. new york city, jeff, looks like this will go all the way through the labor day weekend. >> glor: eric fisher, thank you very much. in the northwest a powerful winter-like storm is being blamed for at least two deaths and plenty

chief meteorologist eric fisher of our boston station wbz is tracking the storm. >> the tropics very active in multiple locations. we'll start with danny, a storm that's well off to the east of the island in the western antill antilles. it's a small compact hurricane but it's packing a punch. it's a fighter, intensifying overnight. there's a window of intensification over the next 24 hours. we switch to the pacific, another tropical storm here. this will strengthen and probably be tropical storm kilo. danny will weaken as it approaches the islands and heading over to the british and virgin islands. by monday and over to puerto rico as a tropical storm, something i'll keep a close eye on over the next couple of days. and then what will be kilo taking a big sweeping curve. you notice by tuesday it's taking an uncertain track here. this is one to keep very close attention on. this is a track that can be very dangerous for hawaii. >>> and in the lower 48 watching a potent system to kick off the weekend. a lot of severe weather diving into the midwest. severe weather is likely on saturday

meteorologist eric fisher of our boston station wbz is tracking the storm and a cooldown for millions of americans. >> we've been keeping a close eye on danny for several days now. at one point a strong major hurricane, category 3, but a wind shear has been tearing danny apart, which is great news for anyone near the virgin islands, the leeward islands south of puerto rico. winds decreasing, so wind not a big story. it could brick beneficial rain. drought rain would be a very good thick without damage from the wind. >>> story in the west, we've got high pressure in control. the winds dying down in the northwest. but without the wind, a lot of smoke hanging in the air. it's going to be a dry week. we're not expecting much rain in helping the efforts. >>> meanwhile in the east there's a dip in the temperatures. 60s and 70s around the great lakes. the u.p. of michigan staying in the 50s. all the way down from st. louis to kentucky and even tennessee. very comfortable to kick off the week. i'm meteorologist eric fisher for cbs news. >>> this morning with there was a string of explosions a

eric fisher is chief meteorologist for our boston station wbz. eric, bring us up to date. >> well, jim, erika encountered a lot of wind sheer in the very mountainous island of hispaniola and it has been shredded apart, very disorganized. it will still bring an impact-- namely, very heavy rainfall. overnight, into sunday, monday, and tuesday, tropical downpours in florida. many areas seeing over five inches of rain because of these downpours. flood watch is out for all of central and south florida, and the flash flooding will certainly be the biggest issue here. to the pacific, unbelievable satellite picture. look at kilo, then we have ignacio, and jimena, all hurricane here's across the pacific. the closest to hawaii is ignacio, a category four hurricane, packing a punch tonight. this will track northwest of the islands but it will bing tropical storm-force winds to the big island where a tropical storm watch has been posted by the hurricane center. >> axelrod: and there's a big storm system, not tropical, but headlined to ia region of the country

eric fisher, the chief meteorologist at cbs station wbz in boston, eric, what conditions will firefighters be seeing? >> reporter: well, charlie, very tough conditions here across the west, especially considering such a wild area of real estate being covered with current fires. so a lot of crews out there, all battling not just very dry condition, but some pretty extreme heat. in fact, record highs expected tomorrow, triple digits all across the southwest reaching up into california, even portland oregon near 100 degrees, and seattle creeping closer to 90. so the heat putting a lot of stress on all those on the "frontline." in the middle of the country, focusing on severe storms. colorado reaching up into wyoming. this storm becomes a potent one tomorrow moving into the midwest. watching for severe storms across iowa and reaching down through the central plains. it will also deliver some cooler air, so 60s and 70s behind that storm. not the case in the east. the heat goes on. official heat wave in boston, first in two years in the city. new york city tied a record at 95. another 90-degree

petersburg florida catty and here in atlanta with me license psychologist eric fisher.n with ygin wi. what were the discussions like on what images to show. >> well, they start today come into the news room really really quick. i mean social media today and our news room filled up with that video really moments after we first got word, and it was not too long after the actual event happened. i have a news room full of people and these are friends. these are people that are there that work with these individuals, and what we decided right on was that this is not going go anywhere. we have it. we know it's there. but this is our community. this is a travesty for the sisters and brothers here. it's a community thing. we're not going to be going down the road. it was an easy decision to make that they were not going to air that video. >> you said that it was an easy decision. why was that was an easy decision? i know that our news rooms and many across the country there will be very difficult on the sensitivities of the story and the realities of the story. sharing as much

so let's bring in psychologist eric fisher and philip holloway.e it's still a very complexing confusing set of circumstances, but we know investigations are still under way. the family pursuing this civil case. even though we don't know all of the facts of the case all that preceded this horrible occurrence of the death of a 19-year-old, is there any way to get into the mind of this alleged pledge who took a challenge possibly to walk on this rail to know that potentially this was a life or death decision? >> well i think what you look at is hazing goes far beyond fraternity and sorority populations. it happens as early as high school situations where there's a case of parkview high school in atlanta about a student that was physically beaten in a hotel room in a hazing incident. the whole issue of hazing -- in order to get into an exclusive organization you're supposed to go through some trials and rituals. they don't have to be humiliating, but often the fear is if i don't live up to what other people want then i'm weak. it's about shaming and h

eric fisher is a licensed psychologist and joins us to try to process what we have all witnessed.ces and was let go a number of times and put real planning and effort into this shooting. what was that and what is in his manifesto tell you about his mental state? >> here's somebody who for a long period of time felt they had been percesecuted and bulli and shamed and feeling weak. what he was seeking to do was to try to get his power back, potentially his role in the media had him knowing how the get attention and his use of social media, he knew he would get some attention, whether it's infamy or not but the outcome is tragic and we have to look at this as a society and not focus on the individual. >> you saying this is a larger issue. this is the first time we've seen it on live television and he recorded it and posted it on facebook as well. i want you to hear what wdbj's station manager had to say about working with the shooter. >> in his personal relationship he was aggressive and people were shy to work with him. he was just not a pleasant person, as it turned out. he had som

eric shawn with the latest. we're back with muhammad elarian. muhammad, the comments coming out of stanley fisher, vice chairman of the federal reserve out of the jackson hole meeting were interesting because he said the confidence in inflation is moving up in pretty high numbers but that the previous case for a september liftoff was not conclusi conclusive. he keeps mentioning china and the devaluation of the currency there. why is the devaluation of the yuan in china so critical to whether or not the fed raises rates, muhammad? >> for several reasons. one is that the fed is worried about the unintended consequences of raising rates. while the domestic indicators, especially the drop markets, are significant nagle go ahead fed raise in september, the international indicators are saying be careful. if you move too quickly, then a few things are going to happen. one is you're going to strengthen the dollar and that's going to cree aid a head wind for the economy. second, you can contribute to financial instability globally and that will spill back onto the u.s. so the fed wants to keep its options

eric. yesterday, william dudley decided to come out saying that a september increase had grown less compelling. we are going to see what stanley fisherays on saturday. is the fed shifting here? what does that mean for the markets? >> i think the fed is shifting. dudley, being the obvious example of that but not the only example, will see what jackson hole has to say. i can't imagine it will be all that different in the sense that there have been two new uncertainties introduced, china, the extent of the weakness, not just in chinese markets but economically and question over how the movements will affect the real economy. stock market moves aren't all that relevant. the fact that gdp recently was quite good in terms of the revision, helps as well. it is not inconceivable that the world congeals in a way that allows a hike. they are probably thinking it is a 25%, 30% probability for september. >> do you see these moves in the market? the global economy is there or is there a disconnect between how the market is reacting very emotionally to what we are actually seeing? >> i think there is a disconnect. certainly, in the domestic u.s. s
