what do you know about jeh johnson and how did he get the position as secretary of homeland security? what's his connection with the department of justice? and the other is eric holder's saying he's going to leave. do you have any idea who might be in line to replace -- >> well, i can address the second part of that question. he's not leaving. >> okay. >> i mean, i think he's the safest job in america. for one thing, the president wants him. for another thing, whenever there's a fork in the road, the attorney general has a delicate position. he is the president's appointee which means he certainly is, you know, wants to and should follow the president's prosecutorial emphasis and his priorities, and every justice department is free to emphasize its own priorities. but he also has to uphold the rule of law. and whether it's griffin bell or men -- [inaudible] under democratic presidents or whether it's ed meese and richard thornburg under republican presidents, attorneys general have found a way to straddle that delicate balance. in the case of attorney general holder, every time there's been a fork in the road and there are political priorities that must be me

eric from decatur georgia. good morning. >> caller: good morning. it was a good, positive thing for our country. we didn't really give it a chance to work. right after johnson didn't want to run for a second term, nixon came in with the republicans and it mainly started attacking it. it went on there for a while and when reagan got in office, it really started to chip around the edges to where we are today, and you look at the voter rights act year after, we're under attack right now from the -- i guess the southern -- the southern part of the country that legislators are coming up with ways to block minorities from voting. >> host: eric, do you personally, have you felt in your words, under attack? >> caller: yes. in many ways. voting. gave money for college. it was a big deal. let me say this. during the early 70's to maybe mid-70's or early 80's, there were more black men in college that finished college than ever before. and like i said, after reagan came in and chopped a lot of programs that derived from the civil rights act, it cut a lot of people down. >> host: okay, eric. thanks very much for the call. max points out that friends at morgan state uni

johnson said he's not going to be able to do that as you just heard. nonetheless, martha raddatz takes the role, some would say as administration surrogate to secure -- skew eric perry. >> do you believe there would be some sort of conspiracy? >> when i have written a letter that if -- is dated may of 2012 and i have yet to have a response from this administration, i will tell you they either are inept or don't care, and that is my position. we have been bringing to the attention of president obama and his administration since 2010 he received a letter from me on the tarmac. i have to believe that when you do not respond in any way that you are either inept or you have some ulterior motive of which you are functioning from. >> it's discouraging to him to, say the least. he says he doesn't understand why having secure borders is anything political, why the president wouldn't do it. you've got to go into those countries like senator lindsey graham brought up and say you know the aid we're giving you, it's going to stop. we already spent billions on illegals. we don't have the money to have them here. we love people but we can't have them all in the united states
