he showed a new more assertive side in going after house majority leader eric cantor on this jobs bill. >> i'd like mr. kantor and explain what exactly in this jobs bill does he not believe in. what exactly is he opposed to? >> jonathan, is this a new, tougher more assertive style that we're seeing from the president? >> i think what you're seeing is the natural transition from governing to the beginning of the campaign. people like to say -- there are a lot of truisms in politics. the problem is a lot of them aren't really true. people like to say elections with incumbents are always referendums. election with incumbents like every other election in the united states is about choices. as the campaign approaches and the choices join, you'll hear the president defining the vision the republicans are offering. it's not going to be them in their campaign that they've had the privilege and pleasure to wage for the last year or so. it's a natural inclination. >> still more than a year until november 2012, david. is it too early for the president to become campaigner in chief and get off the high road, if you will?

there was rough agreement between yourself, eric cantor, the vice president, and the president on the debt ceiling. but for the inability of either you or mr. kantor to control your rank-and-file house republicans, the deal would have gone through. he implied that the republican party is divided and weak and that is what is holding the country back and prevent a bad deal. would you like to address that? >> i sure would. >> i thought you might. >> all year i talked to the president about the need to do what i call the big deal. i thought was critically important for our country to deal with the debt problem we have and the best way to get their would have been for him and i to come to some agreement. i can tell you that i put every ounce of effort that i can and could in to try to come to some agreement. the president said he needed revenue. i told the president i was willing to do revenues but only if the president were willing to really look at fundamental reform of our entitlement programs which is a big driver of our deficit and debt. i put revenues on the table even though the president never said, not one time, ever said yes to any meaningful
