i want to give eric mar a round and welcome him. will you come join us? ok, no, he is taking off. understand. i also want to say this is a special time for me, completing my eigth year on the board of supervisors. i worked for shirley chisholm, a woman who ran for the presidency in 1972, and i had the privilege of working for her 3 years, and than -- then for julian dixon. he was the father i never had, and he mentored and shaped me. having the privilege to join mayor brown's administration, becoming director of neighborhood services, and the experience i have had working with african-american leaders in the united states. i want to take a moment to say that i will always list on my resume that i have voted for sophie to be president of the board of supervisors more than anybody else, ok? [applause] not to tell stories out of school, but when i first got sworn in and thought i knew a few things, we sat there, myself, sophie and gavin, we voted over and over, and we weren't going anywhere. mayor brown gave me no plan b, so i kept voting that way. mayor brown doesn't tell you plan b

thank you for your co-sponsorship as i would like to thank supervisors david campos, eric mar and chris daly. i can see that i think the sensibility of us moving this charter amendment might be spoken by the absence of the public comment. we can take the cue from eight states in the united states, these are eight states that adopted same day election voter registration and they have all seen a bump of upwards to 7% of voter participation. if you compare san francisco in the last 10 municipal elections that we have held, the average voting turnout is approximately 35%, 36% of voter turnout from municipal-only elections in san francisco. yes, five of those states who had the highest voting turnout in 2008 were five states who adopted same day election voter registration. i think it's time that san francisco helps lead the state of california in adopting this particular element because technology has now enabled us to provide the service that i think a lot of people feel excluded from. for a city like ours that certainly likes to see itself as engaged and sophisticated on so many levels, h

eric cantor's ambition is not very well clothed. i won't say it is naked but it is pretty well exposed but as mar as michael steel is concerned, michael steel has had a gas filled year. he had his young donor meeting at the lesbian bondage club in west l.a. you must remember, that caused a stir, and caused the finance chief to leave, chief of staff to leave, political consultant to leechlt he predicted the republicans wouldn't win the house in 2010. it hasn't been sure footing for michael. i don't anybody looks to the party chairs to make foreign defense policy statements. and if it weren't the fourth of july weekend i don't know if the resignation would be news to tell you the truth. >> woodruff: anything about michael steel. >> it was historically inaccurate to say it was barack obama's war. it was stupid. he doesn't make policy. it was terrible all the way around. bill crystal my friend called for his resignation. i think it is right it has to be the last straw. i know the donors have been up in arms about their performance, not only the gaffes but the administrative performance. to me this has to be the end. >> woodruff: speaking
