we begin with ktvu's eric rasmussen who is in the news room, covering the bombings since shortly after noon about an explosion near the boston marathon. >> reporter: you want to talk headlines, another one is the fbi has now taken over the lead in this investigation. there are reports from emergency rooms in boston tonight that doctors have pulled ball bearings from some of the victims and tonight we have video showing a photographer's view standing right there at the finish line. seconds later there was a second blast. thousands of people crowded into that area near the finish line on boylston street. that was before 3:00 p.m. boston time this afternoon. we have learned an 8-year-old boy is one of the three confirmed dead. children's hospital reported treating four other children injured. several news agencies were reporting a person of interest being questioned at a hospital but in that news conference authorities have denied they have a person of interest that they were questions and in that news conference we got to hear from an fbi special agent in charge. >> this will be a federa

ktvu's eric rasmussen has more. >> reporter: these officers admit this is a up hill battle. gang members tend to do well but that is just one part of their strategy to make the streets safer. >> you see a lot of blue, that end, a lot of red. >> reporter: they say gangs are still a serious problem in san francisco's mission district. we attached two cameras to their car. >> he is in the program. >> reporter: within minutes they spotted someone on probation. >> you are not supposed to be hanging out. 5 seconds. is this the only place you can eat? >> reporter: they are offering more than just a warning. those who are willing can get help finding a job. >> we try to talk to them and get them going in a good way. you know, and put them on the right track. >> the officers have been running the program for a year and put about 20 former gang members to work. >> reporter: is there a chance some of the guys are taking jobs away from people who are not getting in trouble? >> no. the jobs that are out there that they are doing, you know, if a person wanted them they could take them but

ktvu's eric rasmussen is live with the punishment you learned about just this afternoon. >> reporter: right. two of these workers are now out of a job. they wouldn't say whether they were fired but officials confirmed their departure is in response to them sharing porn and gambling using city computers. sources close to the investigation said it involved water department supervisors. sources say some of the employees shared porn on over time. they wouldn't discuss specifics but they say other discipline included suspensions and demotions. >> demotions and reassignments. you don't see those as a slam on the risk. these are people who could have had long careers with the city. and now they will have to come to work now in a lower class, working with people they supervised. >> reporter: the investigation started months ago after the city received a tip from a whistle blower. the gambling involved office fools such as fantasy football. the two workers leaving their jobs will not be allowed to take any other positions with the city or the county but because it wasn't illegal their pensions

we go to eric rasmussen.he's been following the -- following some of the local media and social media. >> that's right. they've been putting out information about what they can see and what they're hearing. according to the boston globe police are still concerned that the suspect could be wearing a suicide bomb vest of some kind. that's according to an official source that's talking to the boston globe. when it comes to the flash bangs, there are some reports that there are flash bangs. those are to disorient a suspect before they move in. and there's 50 to 70 people police, fire, fbi all kinds of authorities that have converged in this single area. at some point had a tarp in it. that's where this suspect is at this point. they are approaching them very cautiously. according to the reporting we're hearing from individual reporters on the ground there. some concern that the suspect could be wearing some sort of an explosive device. it would certainly explain why they are taking this so carefully and so slowly

right now we are monitoring feed coming out of cnn and other affiliates and we want to bring in eric rasmussen. what can you tell us right now. >> reporter: some of this information is from a "c" nbc report -- a cnn reporter and they saw two explosions initial lane 10 seconds later a producer said there appeared to be a third explosion possibly coming from a trash can across the street from where the first two explosions happened and obviously it was a chaotic scene on the ground. there are six to seven people injured and obviously there can be more than that. they have been taken to tents to treat fatigued runners and you have to know about two hours ago, the winers of the marathon crossed the marathon. the first runners in this very large race but there are many others still running in this race with about 45 minutes to go. certainly, it is a very chaotic scene on the ground right now as investigators and first responders try to get to those who are injured. this happened in the area of boilston street and i can tell you the area is packed with spectators even when the boston marathon is run

ktvu's eric rasmussen has been going through comments of the men's friends and family who have been speaking out for the first time. >> their uncle called the men losers. their parents say they are good boys. but the idea that these two brothers who had been living in the u.s. for 10 years could be responsible for the bombings and killings of a police officer have brought out strong emotions from people who knew them. friends and family of these two brothers didn't immediately recognize them. even after the fbi released video and surveillance video on thursday. but as soon as they were identified at 26-year-old tamerlan and 19-year-old dzhokhar tsarnaev, their uncle spoke out. >> i say dzhokhar, if you are alive, turn yourself in and ask for forgiveness from the victims, from the injured and from those who left. as forgiveness from these people. >> i'm suspicious that this was staged. the picture was staged. >> reporter: a much different response from the brother's aunt in ontario. in russia both the mother and father said they refuse to believe that their son is responsible for the bombings
