eric shawn's live at the u.n. eric, good morning to you, what is the vote about first of all and what's expected to happen? >> reporter: good morning, bill. the vote on the palestinians, a nonmember observer state. we expect to hear from palestinian authority president mahmoud abbas within the next hour. that vote coming after he turned president obama down flat. the u.s. does not want this vote. the palestinians made a move for it last year in the security council where we have a veto. there is no u.s. veto in the 193-member general assembly where it is expected to pass overwhelmingly later this afternoon. last year the palestinians did move for the full status. it could jeopardize though, $500 million in american aid. despite that the palestinians say this is historic step to full recognition. >> what we are doing is honorable, is legal, is political, is multilateral, is democratic. so therefore once the international community expresses its will by an overwhelming support to changing our status and recognizing t

eric shawn is live in cleveland, ohio looking at what some are doing to ensure that this is really a ee and fair election, eric? >> reporter: that's right, megyn, called protecting the polls. in the efforts across the country to do just that, from federal, states and local election officials there are of course the lawyers, thousands of them from both political parties and campaigns and also the private groups. we caught up with one woman in cincinnati, she's a volunteer, here name is tina hollander braving the cold outside a polling place for hours and looking out for violations of election law or hanky-panky. the department of justice has observe observers, and train them to watch for voter fraud and intimidation and impression, they deny t the ohio voter integrity project, she says their goal is simply an honest election. >> once we lose confidence in the electoral process our democracy goes out the window. it's just as important that people are engaged and feel confident and for the people that say that voter fraud doesn't exist, i think those are the people that doan want us watc

eric shawn has more from there. >>> heather and patti ann while millions went to the polls there areround the country. in iowa there is investigation into possible fraud involving voter registrations and absentee ballots. secretary of state of iowa is investigating. he told us we take all allegations of voter fraud seriously. we hired a criminal investigator to handle all of the allegations of voter praud in iowa. there was a ballot tampering investigation at the county clerk. may be filling in republican that voters left blank. voters registered at this vacant lot could be used for fraud. 18 people are registered to vote here even though the trailer park that was once here was removed three years ago. the voter integrity project is trying to stop fraud. >> they could take the information and utilize it fraudulently. that is unfortunate. >> ohio election say they will be on the lookout for election problems. if they see tort activities location coordinator there they are responsible for making sure that doesn't happen there. obviously if they see anything elts at the call o-- anythin

eric shawn on counselors counting on a recount. >> hi, neil. the lawyers are in town.ou can't get a table in cleveland until 10:00 at night. here is how it works. automatic recount will kick in. if the margin of difference is one-quarter of 1%, 20,000 votes of 8 million all told to ohio voters. could there be one? the counties have to certify the election. if there is a recount it pushes it to september. the board of election and republican county chairman taught us the lawyers are in place. >> quite the effort of lawyers who volunteer their time and have been trained and understand the election process. so they can help the there are serious problems that require involvement of the courts on election day. >> provisional ballot, if you're not on the roles. they have ten days to prove you are who you are. they get counted and it could push it through to november. if there is a tie, the state election law says the winner is picked by lot. imagine that. they have to certify by november 27. to start it in december if

eric shawn is live for us in seagate. what's the situation like where you are? >> yeah, trace.any people are thankful and thinking about turkey and the trimmings tomorrow. in coney island they are just happy with the basics like toilet paper and paper towels. they are relying on aid. aid from the city of new york for their food. distribution centers are handing out food and been doing that for the last three weeks. 3,000 people a day line up because the supermarkets are still closed. for them, it's their lifeline. >> the supermarket is running out of a lot of things. toilet tissue, water. they are in need of things. so people are still, you know, filling in. >> i thank god for charity. helping people because they didn't have to do this. so, i'm thankful for it. >> here in seagate tonight, some are calling the federal government to do more. they say that the army corps of corps of engineers, for example, built up the jetties and bulk heads. the severity of the damage behind me that wouldn't have happened and they certainly don't want it to happen again, trace. >> trace: eric, do

eric shawn has details. this is serious stuff. what sparked this investigation? >> yeah.t really is. the name, adolph hitler. that's right. adolph hitler. that's listed on an ohio voter registration card that was submitted, one of 200 sent to the election board. that's in cincinnati. officials there have been investigating and believed about half of those names were fraudulent, frauds or duplicates. the names that were submitted on those cards that they believe were fraudulent and had problems with them were submitted by a washington, d.c. company called field works. they do canvassing across the country. they say they mostly work with progressive causes and democrats. the chairman of the republican party, a member of the election board there, says voter registration fraud hurts our electoral process. >> what we've seen here should concern every citizen. we have someone doctoring registrations and you have the next step, that would be a serious move toward fraudulent voting. so we're worried about it. >> the case has been referred to local prosecutors. >> arthel: if you r

eric shawn joins me in breezy point, queens which has been devastated. what's going on with this? >> reporter: imagine you're home is destroyed or severely damaged and you come home and there is a red sticker on your door that threatens criminal prosecution. it says you are failing to maintain the property and you are in violation of building codes. the stickers from the new york city department of building, the agency said they are meant to try to document the damage. but despite that, folks say they were shocked. >> we have no structure damage. we called the building department back down to see if they will reevaluate the structure. >> they have to rip it apart. my stuff is inside but i can't get it out. i'm stuck. >> reporter: a spokesman says the violations were issues solely to document the damage that occurred and property owners will not face any penalties as a result. some of the property owners set they wish there was better communication. they say they were stunned and angry to find these stick terse on their doors in the first place. martha: it defies common sense to sa

eric shawn has been following this throughout. he will keep us posted on these developments.icials in the swing state of colorado are looking into reports of malfunctioning voting machines. we always get some of this on election morning. william lajeunesse is live in los angeles. what are they doing about that problem? >> reporter: two states under the microscope. in colorado officials had to test two terminals -- several terminals that where voters were putting in for romney and the terminal was voting for obama. turned out that these were overly sensitive to accidental touches. but they are were not deliberately diverting votes according to the secretary of state. while the touch screens do have voters twice to review their choices. they are being told at the polling places to pay attention before casting their ballot. several county election clerks were criticized for saying they would send home their staff at midnight no matter how close the election counties. martha: what about early voting in nevada? >> both colorado and nevada are early voting states. 80% of registered

eric shawn is live in cleveland, ohio with more. >> reporter: there are many efforts across the countrypolls on tuesday. from state and local election officials and federal government as well as private groups. we caught up with one of them a woman. braving the cold, she volunteers for a group women for liberty. making sure there are no violations of election law. as for the official observers the department of justice monitoring 23 states with 780 observers. perhaps the best known private group is true to vote, houston based organization it wants to ensure an honest election. they are engaged in intimidation and voter suppression but the founder told us they want to protect voter integrity. >> you might see instances where proper identification isn't prevented or asked for. instances where people may be given more than one ballot. those kinds of things, if a poll watcher were to see those things they would approach whoever was running the polling place, the election judge and share what their concerns are. >> reporter: there is also project vote that president obama worked for as a law

senior correspondent eric shawn is live in cleveland with more. eric? >> reporter: hi, jenna. tired election official this morning troubleshooting the problems that went wrong such as long lines, machines that were broken, scanners that did not scan as well as other problems. voters telling us, for example, that when they showed up to vote, they were told they had already voted. that was not true, they said. in one case here in ohio, voters telling us that they had absentee ballots filled out in their names with wrong signatures. all that potentially under investigation, and, yes, they confirmed that there were illegal votes cast in yesterday's presidential election here in ohio. it happened in hamilton county, that's where the hamilton county board of elections at cincinnati tells us some voters at one polling place just walked in, signed their names and cast their ballots illegally even though they weren't registered to vote. the deadline to register in this state was october 9th, but apparently two election judges allowed some voters to do that. one a republican, one a demo

senior correspondent eric shawn is in cleveland.of the problems being reported there. >> reporter: it's the morning after which means it's time for wednesday morning quarterback. we heard about the long lines and the hours of waiting. six hours in polling places in florida. we heard about machines breaking down. scanners that didn't scan. people showing up being told they were not on the voter rolls. some when they showed up an absentee ballot was in their name and it didn't match their signature. there was illegal voting in chicago. two -- one judge was a democrat the other a republican. they were replaced, this happened and involved several votes we are told where people came into a polling place, were not registered and allowed to sign the voting book. they say this point out the importance of having independent observers at the polls. martha: we understand not all the votes have been counted in ohio. >> reporter: they have the provisional ballots to go. voting rights advocates are concerned about the number of provisionals requi
