i'm eric thomas. >> and i'm kristen sze. bay bridge commuters don't be surprised to see a whole new look when crews lift into place the first section of the defining tower that will anchor the new suspension span. teresa garcia. its massive job. >> in many ways and that is from the shear engineering challenge to attach it to the sides and it's 525 feet high. it will be a sight to see as they put in the first section of the new span and new tower that goes on it. the bay bridge's span is premiere piece, $6 billion project. tower being installed will be built from multiple sections of which the first will be lifted and set into place today. piece being erected is 165 feet long, 12,000 ton section is one of five such pieces that will make up this soaring tower which is designed to withstand a massive earthquake. tower sections of the bridge were made in china. they arrived by barge two and a half weeks ago. first section should be finished in about two weeks. the entire tower is expected to be completed by early 2013. traffic f

i'm eric thomas. >> i'm kristen sze. >> oakland police, police are trying to find a sniper. it's what police found after that that is really troubling. terry mcsweeney has the latest. >> police entered that apartment building on eighth street where they think the sniper was, they came upon a surveillance room. they thought they could get some video of the suspect from the cameras that had been recorded in the surveillance room but the room had been vandalized. it was no use to police. perhaps the person vandalized that room ahead of time. it happened about 11:30 last nate. officers stopped the car at eighth and market for a marijuana bust but it became secondary. officers were calling for back-up on the ground and in the air. >> rifle rounds were shot at them in the area. they backed down and called for additional resources. we basically locked down and secured what we believe he came from. >> officers went into the apartment building but did not enter individual units. they were not certain exactly where the shots came from. they didn't know what unit they had come from. ag

. >> i'm eric thomas. when apple talks, business world lesson and today the tech giant is going to hold a news conference that will address problems with their antenna. terry, the big question now, did apple know about this problem before the phone hit the stores? >> bloomberg news is reporting that a senior antenna engineer told steve jobs about this problem early on, that there was problem with the steel casing on this phone which serves as an antenna and this could be a problem. they went ahead with the phone anyway. it is a problem, one, if you hold the phone in such a way that you bridge the gap in this steel casing, it serves as an antenna, your signal strength fades, calls are dropped. another problem, public relations. this iphone 4, like almost all apple products is a runaway hit. how the company deals with it is important for the company going forward. there are many solutions being discussed. >> if you are not physically touching that with the hand then the problem goes away. a bumper or consume

[ siren ] >> police arrested 19 people, mostly clergy members that were blocking traffic during the busy evening commute but what was supposed to be a protest to mark the eve of arizona's controversial immigration law, it was a rally for undocumented workers. a requirement that police check their immigration status while enforcing other laws. arizona's governor promises to continue to fight. >> we knew what was going to april and we knew the other side was going to appeal. >> legal analyst dean john says the case is poised to go all the way to supreme court? >> the judge said she was painfully aware of all the problems that illegal immigration caused but the issue is who gets to solve

i'm eric thomas. >> and i'm kristen sze. topping the news in three hours the first set of firefighters being laid off in san jose will be packing up as part of the city's first ever layoff of firefighters. one station is closing altogether. teresa garcia is live for a final turn-in today. >> we talk about turn-in because you got 51 firefighters that must report to turn in their uniforms their badges and safety gear. it is really the twilight hour for those being laid off because it all takes effect by august 1st. it's not just job losses service reductions affecting the public and there are warning signs posted in front of fire station 33 on communications hill. that warning sign informs residents of the upcoming closure. there are three other closures operating are reduced staff and equipment. they have been trying to balance $118 million budget shortfall. even though firefighters offered concessions like pay cuts and more pension payments the city says the firefighters proposal falls $6 million short so it decided to move

aim eric thomas. >> the search is on in oakland where police are looking for a sniper that opened fire on officers. the shot came from eight street and swat officers just wrapped up their search of that building. terry mcsweeney is live at oakland police headquarters. >> it started out about len 30 last night, its and market, police pulling a car over. we believe it had something to do with marijuana in the car, but soon it became something far more serious than that as a sniper opened fire from a near high-rise apartment building. take a look at the scene. police were all over the place responding to the scene. they were making the stops. they called for back-up and police swarmed to the site and no one was had the hit. officers did enter the apartment building which is on eighth street. that is where they think the sniper was. police did not enter individual apartment units. they were not sure exactly which unit the sniper's nest was. officers thought they caught a break when they got a video camera surveillance room in the building but that didn't work out. >> in an effort to try to

i'm eric thomas. >> and i'm kristen sze. topping our news, commuters that take a.c. transit buses could face major delays stemming from a labor dispute. many drivers called sick in yesterday about an imposed contract. >> you know about 200 of those a.c. transit drivers didn't show up for work yesterday. it is still unclear whether they will call out sick again today. this is all in dispute over a negotiated contract that has been imposed on them. those that will suffer are going to be the passengers, for example here at the a.c. transit hub, no buses just yet but we'll find out shortly if passengers are delayed, as well. today, the atu, transit union workers plans on getting the new contract stopped. they achieved a ruling in it's favor last friday when a judge decided to require an arbitrator to legally settle their issues. a.c. transit has imposed a cost cutting contract that would reduce costs by $16 million which they need to fix the deficit. the workers are disputing contract changes to worker rules and co-pay rules and two tier pension plan. 1600 employees are

i'm eric thomas. >> and i'm kristen sze. let's begin with congestion pricing on the bay bridge. new numbers show after the first few weeks it appears to working. teresa garcia joins us live from the toll plaza with a look at the less crowded morning commute? >> the success of the higher bridge fares depends on who you speak with. transportation officials saying this is exactly what they hoped for, lighter traffic. while a faster commute might delight drivers, higher price they are paying seems to be causing a charge on the roadways they released data. the bay bridge increase was even higher with first ever congestion based pricing hiking to $6. no more free rides for carpoolers, costing 2.50 that may be contributing. a side effect is an increase in mass transit ridership. bart is reporting 4500 riders on its trains each weekend. carpool crossings have dropped by more than 12,000 a day. that is 30% decrease since the toll begin. on bay bridge, overall commutes have declined over 6,000 vehicles a day. positive results of all this, bay bridge traffic delays have almost been cut in
