>>> good morning i'm terry mcsweeney in for eric thomas. >>> and i'm kristen sze, thanks for joining us. a firefighter is hurt this morning injured while in a precarious position while fighting a restaurant fire that broke out overnight in the east bay. let's go live to katie marzullo. >> reporter: this is the tequila grill behind us the back of the restaurant which technically faces east 14th straight. this was a one alarm fire, firefighters had it out under 40 minutes. not the biggest fire by firefighting standards, but just goes to show what a dangerous job this is, because a firefighter was injured. he suffered a severe leg injury. he was on the roof at the time using a saw to try and cut a hole in the roof to ventilate the fire. something happened up there. the chief says maybe the saw jumped on him and his leg got cut. the injury is not life-threatening but described as very severe. the fire broke out after 2:00 this morning when the first engine arrived, firefighters found heavy smoke and fire from the back of the building. actually, a bricked in storage room that had a dumpst

i'm eric thomas. >> i'm kristen sze. >> arson investigators are busy in antioch where three fires broke out owe night and all within a short time. amy hollyfield is live at a strip mall. >> reporter: good morning. it started at the 99 cent store behind me but it's part of a strip mall. take a look at the video. there is what firefighters saw when they arrived. this is why they were concerned. big fire, big strip mall. they went to a second alarm and called for more firefighters to help them out. they did save the building, but when they took a closer look they realized this looks suspicious. >> fire on northwest side of the building and then we had additional fire on the southeast side of the building and approximately there was a fire down on sycamore. we do have an investigator. >> reporter: this fire happened at sycamore drive and called sycamore square. the tree also burned and they did save the mall and will be open today but they are trying to figure out who did this and why. >> eric: a menlo park school remains closed this morning and plans to reopen on monday after a fire that d

eric thomas, abc7 news. >>> we continue our coverage live at the medical center. conflicting reports about the conditions of the officer and suspect. >> reporter: that's right. initial reports from the chp say the officer and the suspect were both in critical condition. now they are saying both are in serious condition. they are very tight-lipped. i want to take you to the scene after the shooting about 9 a.m., we have video of very emergency situation roads surrounding the hospital were closed. two motorcycles escorteding in this ambulance. we don't know if the suspect or the officer were inside this ambulance. we know both are being treated here in the trauma center. i want to take you to the more recent scene. 10 squad cars motorcycle, from chp, local police from pleasant hill one officer from the contra costa county sheriff's office. the somber mood was palpable with officers arriving, wandering, no one would speak us to. back here live a hospital spokesman did confirm that family of the suspect and the officer have been contacted. we don't know if they are he

. >>> i'm eric thomas. in the east bay a woman is in critical condition following a deadly weekend traffic accident that claimed a life the driver is in jail facing felony charges. amy hollyfield is in walnut creek with details. >> reporter: we are learning more about the relationship between the two women. the mercury news is reporting that the woman who is in the hospital and very critical condition is a young woman this her 20s. the woman who was killed was her mother-in-law, here visiting her son and his new wife. they got married over the summer now the young wife is here in the hospital. police say, the driver who hit them is 53-year-old man, he has been arrested for vehicular manslaughter. police say it is too early to know if he was speeding, on drugs or had been drinking. witnesses describe it as a horrific scene. the two women were walking with two men on the sidewalk, when the pick-up hit them. witnesses say 52-year-old sherry hicks landed 80 feet away, she died instantly. the younger woman hicks

. >>> i'm eric thomas. active morning in the bay area and internationally. breaking news from alameda, firefighters had to perform a rescue in a fire that left more than a dozen homeless i am amy hollyfield is live at scene in the 2000 block of pacific avenue. >> reporter: the building is gorgeous one of these older buildings alameda is known for. they saved it, all damage is in the back. firefighters think the fire started outside and traveled up and then up over the roof. there are four units in this building, all are damaged. 15 people living inside all to have to find a new place to stay. the red cross is here trying to help. everyone got out okay. firefighters did have reports that a man was trapped inside they did rush in. they found a man paralyzed, i spoke with his son. he said his father suffered a gunshot wound before the boy was born, several years but he's paralyzed and wasn't able to get out. firefighters were able to rescue him. they got the call 1:00 this morning. it took an hour,. they don't know why it started. haven't said whether they thin
