i'm eric thomas. thanks for joining us. we begin with the mysterious deaths of a couple in an apartment in berkley. it's the second time something like that has happened. 89-year-old dora gibbs and her boy friend are the victims. we are live from the newsroom with more on the story. >> dora biggs' son found the couple. she was in the bed, the boyfriends were beside her. >> their relationship was real clo close. >> reporter: the 33-year-old age difference didn't phase them. they lived and died together in this apartment. when emergency crews arrived. the small apartment was hot and the carbon monoxide alarm was going off. police still don't know what caused the couple's death. family, meantime, rushed to the scene and were worried. the circumstances are eerily familiar. bodies were found in another and the last month. they died of carbon monoxide pois poisoning. >> pretty much the same thing as my grandmother. the same situation but to an older couple. >> reporter: police thoroughly checked the wall he

eric thomas is live at the tunnel with more. eric?rter: and every few minutes a tunnrain goes into th tunnel. every now and then a car goes in and that's not supposed to happen. muni is looking for ideas to make sure that doesn't happen in the future. it's not like the tunnel isn't marked. there are plain signs, lighted signs and even speed bumps all telling drivers do not enter. neighbors say they do anyway. >> i've stopped a couple people and said you can't go in here. >> i don't know why it happens but it happens regularly. >> reporter: this car drove into the tunnel last weekend and got stuck. the fourth incident in a month. this car had to be towed out in january. our partners looked into it and reported it's happened 24 times since 2010. >> the cars get stuck on the rail and so we have to tow the cars out before we can start service. >> reporter: in the meantime, they have to temporarily use shuttle buses while they check the tunnel for damage. so why do drivers keep doing it? >> maybe because they're drunk? >> reporter: that's

i'm eric thomas. we're waiting for the start of a news conference on the latest of the situation at lake oroville dam. the dam is near chico 160 highs northeast of san francisco. the problem is with an emergency spillway designed to relieve pressure on the dam when it's holding too much water. abc 7 news reporter alisa harrington is live with more on the previous news conference they just held a short time ago. >> very chaotic and scary day for people who live below the dam. right now the goal is to prevent water from coming over the top of this emergency spillway. to do this, helicopters are doing drops of boulders to try and plug the eroding soil and crews are releasing 100,000 cubic feet of water per second on the main spillway to try to lower the level of the lake. at least 130,000 people were ordered to evacuate sunday afternoon after officials warned the oroville dam's emergency spillway was at risk of failure. a breach could cause catastrophic flooding in nearby towns. >> scary. >> reporter: so

good evening i'm eric thomas. thank you for joining us. the dam is not expected to fachl it is an emergency fill subway designed to handle extra water run off from oroville lake. people have been told to leave their homes near the dam. the emergency spillway started to erode after it channelled excess water yesterday. they are worried the erosion will continue to the point where the dam will collapse. emergency officials said the erosion damage doesn't appear to be as bad as they thought. they are taking precautions to keep that from happening. >> there is a plan currently in place which would hopefully plug that hole. that would include using helicopters to drop bags of rock into the crevice and prevent any further erosion. >> right now, the main shelter at the silver dollar fair in chico is full. five more shelters are available including ones in paradise and glen county. a fourth is being opened at a church in chico. ambulances are being used to help disabled residents leave their homes and inmates from a county jail are being moved. >>
