eric thomas is in walnut creek. >> reporter: there are two problems with the pole. one, it's in dilapidated condition from years of woodpeckers pecking away at it. two, although it affects rossmoor, it's not on their property. no one minds the squirrels foraging on this hillside or the hummingbirds hunting for nectar, but everyone has a problem with them hanging out atop this old pg&e power pole. >> squirrels can climb up it and get up into the hot wires and get electrocuted. >> reporter: rossmoor resident jim brennan says he's watched them fall onto the dry grass below and spark grass fires. >> it's a potential disaster. we've dodged it. >> reporter: brennan said there have been at least five fires over the 15 years he's lived here, two of them in the past 14 months. he's so concerned he keeps a heavy duty garden hose at the ready to fight the flames while waiting for firefighters. rossmoor officials say they have complained repeatedly. >> we've been told three different times the pole will be replaced. it hasn't been replaced yet. >> reporter: residents took these

eric thomas with more. >> reporter: today the whine of these chain saws was like music to the ears of residents who live along golden rain drive in ro rossmoor. >> this is great progress railroads jim brennan has lived a stone's throw away from the power pole for 15 years. he has seen grass fires burn up the hill time after time most recently a few weeks ago. >> yes, we did experience a fire in september caused by a squirrel that had made contact with our equipment. >> reporter: pg&e crews were out on this windy red flag wednesday on a steep hillside working to replace the old power pole with a sturdier, new model. with the old pole, squirrels could climb up and be electrocuted by the high voltage conntors at the top and fall to the ground below igniting grass fires. >> so what we're doing now is adding covers to our vertical conductors and connections, and that should help prevent those kinds of problems from occurring moving forward. >> reporter: but not so fast says jim brennan. he says pg&e first promised to fix this by the end of last year and with a different kind of replacement

eric thomas spoke to the owner of the vineyards yesterday. fred young says he has never seen the fire burn this close to the family vineyard near geyserville. he filled a water tanker and sprayed the vineyards down and put out spot fires as the fires popped up. he said the timing this year couldn't have been worse. they were planning on harvesting grapes last night. >> most of the time it's been further away. really didn't have much to worry about. a few embers, stuff like that. this wind was blowing directly towards us. >> the family has owned land there since the 1850s and lost several buildings to wildfires. >> kent porter with the santa sa press democrat caught a woman trying to protect her property with a hose as the kincaid fire exploded yesterday. there are closures to tell you about because of the fire. the alexander valley union school district, geyserville unified making up four schools will not have class. also the cloverdale unified canceled classes today. >>> the other breaking news this morning right here from the live desk, pg&
