live in fairfield, eric thomas, abc 7 news. >> eric, thank you very much. we just got off the phone with one of those coronavirus patients whose quarantine at home in solano county. robert young and his wife are isolated in their home in rio vista. he says they don't feel that bad, as you heard from the experts, sometimes the symptoms are not serious. he said it feels like they have allergies. robert is a retired firefighter, who says he thought he had seen it all until now. >> it's absolutely an ordeal, we have pets our children are taking care of in another city, and through this entire event. simple things like getting groceries and toilet paper and sundries, we're at the mercy of, you know, family and friends purchasing it for us and then putting it in the driveway, and then we pick it up. we can't have any direct contact. how could you expect something like this. i'm a career firefighter, paramedics i thought i had seen everything in the world. no, this doesn't even come close to it. >> our thanks to robert young talking to us from his home in solano c

eric thomas is live at the pleasant hill bart station tonight with a look at some of the solutions. eric? >> one of the big effects of this of course since bart uses those fares they charge for you to ride to provide operating expenses is a big drop in ridership means a drop in those fares and a drop in the operating expenses. so they're facing a possible $125 million deficit in the next fiscal year. so they're hoping to fix this and fix it pretty fast. 10 million fewer night and weekend riders took part in 2019, compared to 2015. that's like losing the entire populations of new york city and dallas, texas combined. riders have their theories as to why. >> it's dangerous. >> it's dirty for sure. >> they charge exorbitant fares. >> that's why bart is pouring a lot of sweat and brainpower into figuring out -- >> what do our riders need to keep them coming back. >> one factor contributing to the decline, competition with ride share companies like uber and lyft. but the survey of riders found the number one reason people gave is many of them weren't going out as much on weekends. number

abc7 news anchor eric thomas continues our live team coverage from fairfield tonight. eric, walk us through what they said, if you would. >> well, dan, first they explained why they declared a state of emergency, to give them access to resources they wouldn't ordinarily have and allow them to open their special operations center. and they also said yes, this was the first case of community transmission and its occurrence was not a surprise to them at all. the news conference featured the county's chief health officer, a representative from the cdc and a spokesperson for north bay vaca valley hospital. that's where the patient was initially treated the four days that laura talked about without being tested for coronavirus because at the time she didn't meet the criteria. well, cdc says those criteria are being reexamined and may be changed. the county says it's now changing strategy from trying to keep the virus from gaining a foothold to preparing to treat cases that occur. they call that mitigation. also, north bay hospital says employees who came in contact with the p

live in fairfield, eric thomas, abc 7 news. >>> a roller coaster ride on the dow today ended in the red for the fifth straight day this week. the dow lost 357 points closing around 25,400. the s&p 500 dropped 24 points or 0.8%. the nasdaq was essentially flat gaining less than a point. take a look at this graph of the dow jones changes over the course of this week. it's the worst selloff since the 2008 financial crisis. since monday the dow has lost more than 3,500 points. stock in clorox had its first down day for this week. headquarters are in oakland. the company makes cleaning and disinfecting products which are in high demand because of coronavirus. stock was down about 5% today. >>> mayor london breed hit the streets in san francisco's china town where merchants say fears of coronavirus are hurting business. the mayor started with a short shopping spree in some of the stores along grant avenue. later she joined with state senator and assemblyman david chu. their message that the city is prepared for the virus but areas like chinatown are safe, unaffected and open for business. >>
