erica gonzalez has more on the investigation and reaction from the neighbors. >> reporter: just before 4:00 this morning, police say they responded to shots fired near the bening road metro station. according to police, a verbal dispute of sorts set off the suspect. >> it almost sounds like it was involving alcohol and just people running their mouth. >> reporter: police say the man then shot two people riding in their car. a 16-year-old girl and a 24-year-old by the name of steven way. they say the two victims were hit with multiple gunshots, and the suspect who remains at large showed little respect for the public safety, in a potentially combustible arena. >> anyone that is willing to pull out a gun over an exchange of some words i don't think is really concerned with the public safety or well-being, whether it's at a gas station or anywhere else. >> reporter: the teen was transported to a nearby hospital. but police say she's going to make it. way, on the other hand, died. police would not discuss their relationships and say the victims had no prior relationship to the suspect. nea

erica gonzalez reports from tysons corner mall where thiefs are doing it all over again. >> reporter: fairfax county police say they already recovered nearly $30,000 worth of stolen merchandise this season. but the thieves aren't just local. at $10,000 rolex watch. that's what one man tried to get away with by using a fraudulent credit card at a high-dollar store at tysons corner last week. the store clerk called them after they said that the suspect's behavior was off. that's why retail anti-theft teams are hitting the streets. some are in regular uniform but most will be undercover. dressed like anybody else. >> what we are looking for now in tysons corner, which is the out-of-state crime ring coming into this a. area. tysons corner, fair oaks, fairfax county in general is known for a very wealthy population. >> reporter: what do the professional con artists look like? police say they tend to go for store corners. they are always looking over their shoulder. they are trying to steer clear from shoppers and cops alike. dawn had her credit card abused and is more leery of her purchase

erica gonzalez spoke to one of those victims. >> i think it was a human shark looking for easy prey. >> reporter: edward jones has had to learn the hard way. if it's too good to be true, it probably is. jones is disabled and relies on social security to make ends meet. desean terry johnson met jones last may. he promised to get jones a job as a janitor but said he would need to shell out money for things like equipment and a uniform. jones gave up $700, but got no job. he says he thought johnson was his friend. >> for him to take that money from him, it did have a little bit of an emotional impact on me. >> reporter: now he knows what a real friend looks like. >> well, i actually call him more of a guardian angel. >> oh, gosh. stop. i'm going to get embarrassed. >> reporter: this officer says a concerned citizen told him residents at the inwood house, a residential community for mentally and physically disabled adults, may have been exploited. that's where he met jones. montgomery county police believe there could be more victims and encouraged them to come forward. desean terry john

erica gonzalez spoke to the victim about that attack. >> reporter: she is 85 years old.afraid the assailants would come after her again, she didn't want her identity to be known. but still, told us her story. the victim says she was on her way to church last friday morning when she noticed a pair of unfamiliar faces sitting in a gold car near her home on the 1900 block of shepherd street in northeast d.c. the woman said she was outside her car scraping the ice off her windshield when the first assailant came from behind her, grabbed her purse and took off running back. >> i was fighting with him with my ice defroster. and he took off so fast that he threw me to the ground. >> reporter: when the victim is 85 years old, it's i guess a little, it hits home a little harder. we don't want this happening to people who might be a little more vulnerable. >> reporter: police say while the victim was distracted with the first suspect, another one emerged. >> the second person in the car got out. he went around and my car was already started. getting defrosted. and he jumped in my
