and "badly injured" according to "the baltimore sun's" erica green. what more can you tell us? tell you is that the officers have sort of fallen back. there are people milling around. it's not clear whether these are the same people who threw the rocks, bottles, bricks, whatever is allegedly being thrown at the police. but the police sort of have to quarantine this area at this point and try to move people on. and you can see that these are people who don't want to be moved on. and the police really do not want to provoke a conflict here. but as mr. marquez was saying at some point, police have to bring in reinforcements, and i can tell you that there are plenty of reinforcements around the city from other jurisdictions who are waiting for the call to come in. but really don't want to get that call. >> brian thanks so much. marquez, to you. how can law enforcement -- can law enforcement influence the pattern of protests. can they play a role in calming a situation like this beyond just protecting themselves and protecting the population? >> who was that question for? >> it's fo

erica green is a baltimore sun reporter who has been out in the streets of baltimore all day. thank you very much for being with us. >> thanks for having me. >> can you give me what you've seen today in terms of the trajectory and where the momentum is? >> sure. i started out at the very beginning of how this all transpired. it started with a posting on social media of high school students saying they were going to have a purge, a play on the movie "the purge," was which a 24-hour time of lawlessness and they were going to converge at a mall in west baltimore. that indeed happened around 3:00 p.m. students and police confronted each other there. the police were ready for that because they did intercept that message earlier in the day. by the time i got there around 3:20 bricks were being hurled at police officers. the crowds began to swell on both sides. police officers came in with reinforcements. students from other schools, and i say students because even the police officer have confirmed they did confront mostly school-aged kids and really it was just an intense hour-long,

joining me from baltimore erica green. y understanding i was following you on twitter earlier today right when things starred when school let out. right by the mall. can you explain how it all started? >> by the time i got there we had reporters going out. we knew 3:00 p.m. there had been a social media going around that indicated there would be a, quote unquote, purge at 3:00 p.m. starting at mondawmin mall. students congregate there a lot. a lot of high school -- it's not unusual for that type of thing to go out and usually nothing comes of it. by the time i got there around 3:20 or so it definitely was a gathering that was definitely about to take a really bad turn. you know i walked into students, i believe they were students because they were very young of age and school aged and the police commissioner just said, they were students. but they were hurling, you know rocks, cinder blocks bottles anything they could pick up at the police and more police were coming to the scene as were more students and residents from the

i want to bring in baltimore sun reporter erica green, who has been covering these protests. she was maced during the protests. erica, where are you right now? tell us what you're seeing and what happened to you earlier? >> reporter: i'm sorry. one second. i'm on gwynns falls parkway right outside the mall where the protest was supposed to begin, there was a notification that went out students would be gathering here after school. i got here around 3:30. when i got here it was much more than a gathering. it was, frankly, just an all-out war between police officers and students in the neighborhood. bricks rocks, glass, tires, trash cans, anything that could be thrown was thrown. i saw officers badly injured. i've seen journalists assaulted. it's just been absolutely insane the crowd has swelled over time as has the number of police officers and right now i'm standing in the middle of a big kind of perimeter that the police have formed with their bodies around several blocks of the parkway. gwynns falls parkway. trying to push the people back to where this began and things are s
