. >>> first back inside to erica hill at newsdesk. >> good morning to everyone at hole. >>> south koreaexercises when north korea opened fire on a small island near a disputed seaboarder. this morning's artillery attacks triggered a military response. the obama administration condemned the attack. cbs news senior white house correspondent bill plante has the latest. bill, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, erica. here at the white house, national security adviser called the president and woke him up just before 4:00 eastern time with the news that the north korean had begun shelling yeonpyeong island, a small island off the coast of the peninsula where the south was ducting military exercises. artillery rained down on the island near the disputed border for more than an hour setting homes ablaze and killing at least two south korean marines. the south returned fire and scrambled fighter jets sending tension between the two nations to a new high. in a pre-dawn statement, white house press secretary robert gibbs called on the north to immediately stand down. the united states
