erik: this brings up an important question. rated junk bonds have recovered to their pre-pandemic levels. do you recall ever seeing a bigger gap between credit pricing and fundamentals? howard: i don't think so. erik: the biggest ever? by the way, the government has not bought many low rated bonds, maybe none. they bought some low rated etf's. they have created an environment liquidityolific ies have been able to stay in business. when you say that bonds have recovered to their historic highs, which means the yields are at their historic lows. in bonds, the yield and the price have an inverse relationship. the bonds are at their lowest yields. rates areinterest lower than they have ever been. back to years, the 10 year treasury yielded two. a high-yield bond may have yielded seven. more, that is worth taking the risk. when the yield on the ten-year treasury goes to almost zero, and high-yield bonds can sell at 4 and still look attractive, because all the decisions are made on a relative basis. is whathe yield spread determines

erik: we do. as part of the view associated with the dollar, but mostly recognizing that real rates are negative and likely to stay negative and could become more negative given the path policy, given the risk of slower recovery, slower realization of inflation. monetary policymakers are not raising rates anytime soon. they will let rates rise so we see rates go deeper negative for some time to come. if you want exposure to real assets gold is one way to express that you. -- view. alix: do you feel like yields in the u.s. have more to drop than anything in europe? erik: we don't think yields in the u.s. will rise meaningfully from here. they could drop more. a significant resurgence of the virus, additional shocks and economic growth, you could see yields decline. itt is not our base case but is baked into a bear case. what we see is rates staying stable and inflation expectations picking up, further causing real rates to stay negative or go more negative. alix: you see that happening in the u.s.

erik schatzker spoke to ben melkman to get his take on the consequences we are facing from covid-19.en: in general people are optimistic about the virus. we will get a vaccine in q4 and move on. then when you look at the consequences, people have not made the linkage between the policy making response isn't necessarily linked to the outcome of the virus. i.e. the virus was a catalyst that allowed an extreme change in a short period of time. it is now taken a life of its own. medical optimists are correct, and even if the virus is not a major part of our lives over the following years, i still think these changes will be borne out, and we are not going from a policy perspective or social perspective or political perspective back to where we were. out, wefor this to bear don't need the virus to stay with us for any long gated time. i think -- four an elongated time. i think the horse has bolted and will be hard to be put in the box. we have let the political cap out of the bag. we have seen in the virus big social movements burst out. these are conflicts already simmering under the sur
