erika reports on a unique memorial that not only pays tribute. it actually helps to make us safer. >> whenever there's a loud noise, i've always been one of those people that runs towards the noise, versus away. that's one of the reasons i became a volunteer firefighter. >> erika: scott koen vividly remembers the events of 9/11. the planes that crashed in washington dc, pennsylvania and new york city. scott wanted to do something special to honor those caught up in the terrorist attacks. and so i developed a project called freedom plaza, which was to use the materials from the world trade center, and make a large north american bald eagle out of it, and it's on the size and scale of the statue of liberty. scott designed the memorial to stand where the world trade center towers had fallen. but the city of new york was already developing other plans for the site, and scott's memorial was not destined to be a part of them. then, late one night, he came up with another, even more ambitious idea. >> well, if we're going to use the steel and the alumin

erika miller highlights a few of this year's winners, and why their strategies are working. >> reporter: think of interbrand's list as the oscars of business branding. this year, most companies on the list were able to boost their brand values, unlike last year. interbrand's jez frampton says that's a positive sign the economy is improving. >> what this shows is that the companies who own these brands are performing well. the brand value doesn't increase if their business doesn't perform, because brands and businesses are interlinked. >> reporter: coca-cola ranked number one for the 11th year in a row. but half the top ten are technology companies this year-- including i.b.m., microsoft, google, intel and h.p. microsoft's david webster credits his firm's high ranking partly to improvements in popular products, like windows and office. >> if every year we ship a better version of a product people already know and love, that just increases satisfaction and momentum for the brand. the second thing that we do is create new products and brands in spaces that are rapidly growing. >> reporter:

erika miller has more on what's behind the merger, and what it will mean for consumers. >> reporter: for southwest, a big reason for the merger is the southeast. the discount airline carries more passengers in the united states than any other, including the big boys. but analyst jim corridore says southwest has been missing one key, lucrative market. >> airtran presents a very compelling opportunity, because they have a big foothold in atlanta, which is a market southwest doesn't serve. that's a great business market, and southwest is focusing on attracting more business travelers, so that's a nice fit for them. >> reporter: in addition to atlanta, southwest will gain coveted slots in other top business markets, like new york and d.c. morningstar's basili alukos says the acquisition also makes sense for southwest because it wipes out one its biggest rivals. >> airtran has a younger fleet. they have a younger workforce. and those go against southwest because, as a result, airtran has a lower cost structure, so that allows them to compete. it allows them to reduce costs. >> reporter: t

erika miller visited the factory of a company struggling with that decision. ♪ ♪ >> reporter: when youeg warmers and dance sweaters, you probably think of the fashion craze created by the movie flashdance in the '80s. in fact, dancewear made by k.d. dance was featured in the film. now the look is back in style, part of the reason k.d. dance expects holiday orders to double this year. the company's entire product line is made at this factory in the bronx. >> we might be the only knitwear apparel manufacturer in the u.s. right now. we might be the only ones. >> reporter: david lee, the founder and president of k.d. dance, is wrestling with whether to add a second shift. sales online have been improving steadily, but wholesale orders not as quickly-- and that's roughly half its business. lee knows a second shift would give the company greater flexibility to turn out new designs. >> we have six operating machines-- the computerized knitting machines-- and we're busy, we need those machines for production. so there's always a delicate balance between taking a machine out of production and p

as erika miller explains, those decisions can provide some important hints about the strength of holiday sales. >> reporter: in brooklyn, under the manhattan bridge, is a gift shop called stewart/stand. it's a family-owned business-- penelope runs the store, while her brother-in-law paul is in charge of the wholesale division. though it's only september, the two are already finalizing holiday hiring decisions. >> i would suggest probably gathering resumes now and seeing what sort of caliber people we can bring in. >> reporter: business was suprisingly strong in august, part of the reason the company plans to add more seasonal workers than last year. >> i think it's definitely due to the increase in tourism to this neighborhood. we are right next to the brooklyn bridge, there's a lot of different restaurants and places to go to down here. >> reporter: the picture from larger retailers is also fairly optimistic. the hay group, a consulting firm, surveyed major chains and found 83% plan to hire the same number or more seasonal workers. just 17% plan to hire fewer workers. but competition fo

erika miller introduces us to two business owners with different reasons for holding back on hiring. >> reporter: jewelry designer bonnie riconda say she's one of the fortunate small business owners. sales at her company, calico juno designs, have not gotten hammered in the midst of a weak economy. she works out of a studio in the back of her store on city island in the bronx. >> in terms of sales, we are remaining steady, which is really, really good-- especially in a business where it's not a necessity. >> reporter: riconda says she often needs extra help but is hesitant to boost payrolls until sales pick up. on the other hand, she recognizes it will take time to find the right worker and weeks to train the person to make her 850 designs, which is why she is considering hiring someone as soon as this fall. >> i would like to be able to hire somebody for right before christmas and get the store stocked up, because we do get busy last year right before christmas. >> reporter: lack of demand isn't the only problem small businesses are facing. even firms with strong sales are holding o

in tonight's "shoptalk," erika miller looks at the new spirit of esprit. >> reporter: this man is no ordinary esprit customer. he's john gunn, the president of esprit for the americas, buying clothes for himself. yes, esprit, a brand popular with teenage girls in the '80s, now has a men's line. why did you extend the brand into menswear? >> the brand, when it came from europe, always had menswear. men are coming down, and they are absolutely shocked that we have such a sophisticated men's collection. >> reporter: that's not the only strategic shift. clothing styles have become more sophisticated, to broaden esprit's appeal to older shoppers. you won't find any current merchandise emblazoned with the iconic esprit logo, except a few throwback items near the register. >> this is almost identical of what it used to be back in the '80s, but we don't carry big logos throughout the store now. you'll see that most companies, once they're branded, don't carry their name all over the place. >> reporter: you can see reminders of what esprit used to be at the company's u.s. headquarters in manh
