let's get to erika martin with the most accurate weather. letz's hear more about my favorite meteorology term, soupy. >> absolutely. conditions for today, this morning you guys, i'm liking this right now because look at this live shot. we're seeing a clearing. earlier we did see lots of fog and we do have some dense fog north and west of philadelphia, but looking a lot better right now. we do have a southerly and southwesterly breeze. notice the flags right now, but the good news is we're certainly seeing an improvement there as far as visibility is concerned. neighborhood temperatures in and around the metro area seeing upper 60s, low 70s. port richmond at 72 degrees. society hill at 70. penn's port 69 and the current temperature 70 degrees but it's all about the southerly southwesterly influence which is why today it is going to be soupy and muggy. here's jessica with traffic. >> we're starting off this morning on the blue route. everything looks good so far the southbound side over here. headed toward the mid county tolls, no problems. st

meteorologist erika martin has more on this storm's path. a, fill us in. >> that's right, rosemary and vai. we're tracking hurricane irma's path as it continues to move through the atlantic basin. the concern, of course, is that while it's a category 4 right now, sustained wind speeds at 155 miles per hour, that very well could change, because the minimum for a hurricane for a category 5 hurricane is 156 miles per hour. so we'll be updating you on hurricane irma's path and strength consistently for the next several hours, until it makes landfall. we're expecting landfall in florida somewhere between saturday into sunday, right now. models are saying sometime right before sunrise. so, again, this is just something we do have to monitor, because things can change. this is not set in stone. so i want you to be aware of that. locally, we have a. >> and for the lehigh valley, we could see a few sprinkles. that's about it. here's pam with traffic. >> erika, we're beginning to see some delays, especially in new jersey. let's start out with deptford

. >> let's get right to erika martin in the most accurate forecast for your neighborhood. erika, fog out there, looking at some rain as well? >> we do have some scattered showers moving in later so we'll be tracking that for you hour by hour, but right now the big story for this morning, fog for areas north and west of philadelphia. locally we are seeing a clearing. 67 degrees. we have 66 for mount holly. philadelphia 69 for you along with dover and currently 66 degrees. atlantic city, your current temperature 68 degrees. more importantly we're seeing southerly and southerly winds. southwesterly winds and that's why conditions right now are so muggy and this is why we're also seeing dense fog especially north and west. because of that tropical influence, dew points in the 60s. temperatures in the 60s so that's definitely all the ingredients we need for that fog to develop. a live look over citizens bank park, it's not foggy here, but as we take a look at our fog forecast for the rest of the day we'll start this at 6:00 a.m. and we are seeing some more dense fog even though

let's get right to meteorologist erika martin. within the last hour, erika told us that irma has been downgraded to a category 4, but we're not dismissing at all the power of this system. >> not at all. because what you have to consider, vai, is that as it makes landfall, it's expected to, in florida, it's not just going to be feeling like it's 155-mile-per-hour wind speeds. it's going to feel like it's a lot stronger. so we have to think about the exponential effect of it actually making landfall. however, what i do want to mention is that it's really interesting, in the atlantic basin and the gulf, we have a combined three hurricanes. jose currently at a category 3, will not affect us, as it's going to stay out to sea. irma, a category 4, and katia, currently, a category 1. so a lot of activity going out on in these waters because sea surface temperatures are very warm, an active time of year in the tropics. current temperatures, mainly in the 50s. we're almost seeing 50s in philadelphia. let's hang tight. 59 in philadelphia. 52

nbc 10 first alert meteorologist erika martin and to break it all down for us. >> right now the biggestoncern is state martin. we are getting lots of images coming in from saint martin. currently irma is a category 5 hurricane and wind speeds are 185 miles per hour. it is moving west northwesterly at approximately 16 miles per hour. so at a decent rate. because it is tending westward it is maintaining its strength. it is expected to make land fall in florida as a category 4. let's go ahead and time this out for you. notice it passes to the northeast of puerto rico and to the north of the dominican republic. because of this path that's what's actually sustaining hurricane irma. once it gets to florida it looks like it is going to make a land fall. unfortunately a category 4 is what we are expecting. i would say overnight saturday into sunday we are expecting that to make land fall. what's going to happen here is that it has to continue in some way. energy and motion stays in motion. storm surges will effect everyone up and down the eastern sea board. there is no way that something of thi

nbc 10's erika martin here to time out the hurricane and what we can expect. such a serious situation, erika. >> yeah, you know, ted, i have a couple facts i want to point out before we get to that radar. we'll track it for you. landfall is likely as a category 4 for the coast of florida. catastrophic damage for people, pets and property. conditions are definitely going to be catastrophic to say the least. hurricane-force winds extend 70 miles and tropical-storm-force winds extend 195 miles. let's put that into perspective. it's approximately, the florida peninsula is approximately 16 o miles wide. so those tropical-storm winds are wider than the actual peninsula. we're already seeing some beach erosion by miami beach has already reported approximately four feet of beach erosion so that's something we're definitely going to be observing for you. a huge concern for us, as far as meteorology is concerned. now, last night, irma did make landfall in cuba as a category 5 and of course now we're watching it move through the florida straits and how it will likely stre

let's check in with meteorologist erika martin with our first alert neighborhood forecast. >> vai, we what's exciting is that we have a very nice stretch of weather locally with temperatures mainly in the 70s. and lots of sunshine. but as you also touched on, irma is a huge story, even though it's not going to make a direct impact here, we are tracking her track rate now, a category 5, currently sustained wind speeds are at 160 miles per hour. and she's moving at west-northwesterly 60 miles per hour, and the current central pressure is 925 millibars. i say all of that to say we can continue its path and look here. she will maintain her strength as a category 5 for the next several hours and eventually become a category 4. however, the big concern is that hurricane irma is not encountering any landmasses. so, the issue is that there is nothing that's going to have her become a lot less organized or a lot weaker. so one of my concerns is, as it continues to move through the bahjhama bank towards florida, mile, specifically, it very well could make a landfall as a category 5. right now,

. >> i'm erika martin and we are tracking a patchy foggy start to our thuz. also tracking remnant moisture of irma. some scattered showers late on thursday. here's a look at the upper level low and that moisture headed in our direction. notice that it does have a southwesterly to northeasterly flow, locally here we see these clouds developing to the northeast. some green on the screen not making it into our viewing area. not yet and i certainly don't expect a washout for today. in fact, hour by hour forecast will start at 4:00 a.m. and get this going. we do see clouds throughout the day and that fog will start to mix out or burn off after 9:00 a.m. but we're still seeing some clouds moving through and a couple of scattered showers. notice at 5:30 p.m. right around philadelphia we're seeing some oranges and yellows and we could see water to isolated downpours. i don't think we'll get any isolated thunderstorms for today but i do think we'll get some for tomorrow as a cold front pushes on through. we continue with our hour by hour through 11:00 p.m. and notice
