i'm erin burnett. the deadly train crash tonight in spain. shocking this is just a high speed train. people on their way to madrid. as many as 45 people at this moment are dead. the moment keeps changing. it was a high speed train that derailed in northwest spain. the numbers of the dead are according to reuters siting officials. railway officials say the train derailed on a curve as it was approaching a station in the city which is about 400 miles outside of madrid. more than 200 passengers were on board. pictures of the scene showed at least one train car snapped in two. one other one of the trains cars on fire. it is a fluid and tense situation. bodies just literally strewn outside that train tonight some covered with make shift blankets or sweaters. i want to get to al goodman in spain with the story tonight. what can you tell us? >> this train accident is how it is being described by officials at this point with no early indications of terrorism is what we are being told by a senior aid to the prime minister ooccurred on a madrid spain a

erin? >> thanks to ben.onfirmed dead and an estimated seven are missing after a 73 car train derailed and exploded. anna, i know officials held a press briefing late today. did they say anything about what could have caused this unbelievably horrible accidents? >> unfortunately, no, we don't know what caused this hideous accident as we say. we do know, however, that 13 people are dead. 37 are still missing. there is a wide scale investigation underway. was it operator error? the engineer of this train had left it unmanned and checked into a hotel. was it faulty old commitment or was it foul play? police have not ruled out a criminal act. what we do know is that on saturday night at 1:00 a.m., this train somehow became disengaged from its brakes, it was parked on a slope, it rolled down, gained momentum and it then derailed and exploded several times, literally wiping out the historic town center, at least 30 buildings destroyed many of those homes, businesses and a bar that was really packed with people. so

live from the carlton hotel in cannes, what it security like today, erin? it hasn't changed?reporter: john, let me just tell you that we got off the prosecutor's phone and they confirmed that $136 million figure, the amount in jewels that were stolen, they say, from the carlton hotel in broad daylight yesterday, they tell us that they do not believe that there was an police involved in this heist. it happened around 11:30 in the morning when prosecutors say a man walked into the hotel with a semiautomatic pistol. he entered a temporary ex hib bit which was featuring extraordinary diamonds and brandished his guns and threatened to shoot the guests and exhibitors before making away with $136 million in jewels. it's not the only jewelry heist to happen in the last few months. about $1 million was taken from a novatel hotel room. following that, a $2.6 million diamond necklace was taken from a hotel party. plenty of questions are being raised as to how this could happen and why there was not more security, given the staggering figure, $136 million. >> as you say, erin, not just h

erin mcpike has been working the story for us.g word of an arrest. >> there was one arrest today. d.c. police tells cnn they arrested a female today at the national cathedral where they found wet green paint splattered on an organ console in the bethlehem chapel. there was even more paint in the children's chapel. they charged the woman caught there with defacing property but that's all police can tell us at this time because the investigation is still ongoing. and it may be separate from two other sightings of green paint in just the past few days. because over the weekend, park police discovered more green paint doodled at the back of the statue in front of the smithsonian castle, after discovering green paint thrown on the lincoln memorial early friday morning. police have yet to determine if all of these incidents are connected, but the good news is that officials say that in all of these cases, the green paint can be cleaned up rather easily. >> so we don't know if this is one individual doing this or copycats. >> it could ab
