erin, let me come to you first. it looks very worrisome to see a 600 point loss on the dow of course. could that turn around if, god willing, there is, there are limitations to the severity of this omicron variant? >> absolutely. in fact we actually saw something very similar to this just the week around thanksgiving. so it does seem like as we get this news around omicron and, of course when, in the u.s. people are traveling more worried about it. we actually saw a similar, not quite as sharp, but -- only took us two weeks to completely recover to actually reach a new high. we're basically in the a sideways trading pattern where we go sharply up and down and then we, we saw this last year when the delta variant came out, it traded sideways for about three months so we do have these big, sharp down days. we actually just went through this last year. hopefully investors can realize that there is going to be this constant pull and push between fear and confidence and that you just need to sort of ride this out. david:

erin, i want to start with you. as we wait for one of these events to happen now, we just heard from the california governor. no real news other than what we already knew, which is that this person had tested positive for this variant. they had returned to california from south africa just a couple weeks ago, right? >> reporter: that's right. they returned to san francisco from south africa in late november. upon their return, this individual, who has not been so far named by authorities, developed what was called mild symptoms. from there, got tested and, obviously, the fact that this individual traveled from south africa around this time would have raised red flags with officials. authorities there at the university of california, san francisco, confirming overnight sequencing within a matter of hours that the individual was infected with the omicron variant. still testing positive, according to authorities. the individual was fully vaccinated according to health officials there in san francisco by moderna, though
