erin, thank you so much for being here.hese schemes play out and what sort of psychological tactics do these scammers use to trick people? erin: the way victims are usually contacted is they receive what appears to be a wrong number text. and those have gotten increasingly clever. they're doing anything they can to just get your attention long enough to respond so that they can drop in a picture of usually an attractive young asian female who will say, hi, my name is jessica. i hope i'm not bothering you. we're finding that people will respond to that and they will start engaging in conversation with a jessica who over the next 90 days will sell a dream of being with her and her fancy elevated lifestyle. and then what happens over time is they get these victims to invest in cryptocurrency, like the scammer purports that she did. that's how she became wealthy. and our victims will invest a little bit and they will ca false dashboard showing their exponential increase in value, and that will lead them to invest more and more

erin, i was just talking about those yields. your focus is on the u.s. dollar compounded by these higher yields. what do you make of the 10-year pushing that 5% mark? many is have said that is a big red flag for them, and that could be the true markings of a correction. >> absolutely. i think looking at this coupling of both the selloff in equities as well as treasuries is important. obviously, it's all about what the yields are going to do. i think we are, as the year moves on, we'll see more of a decoupling where we see the bonds and the equities move in different directions, certainly as we're still waiting for those cuts. but i think that 5-year, really we should be getting used to higher yields for longer. it is going to be more expensive to borrow for longer and that expecting these rate cuts and going back to a zero rate environment, we really need to get that out of our minds. cheryl: yeah. 9 and the concern, keith, is consumer borrowing. the housing market, the mortgage rate story which we're now looking at the commentary from the mba senior vic

i'm erin burnett. outfront tonight, the breaking news, the deadly inferno. >> officials just confirming that five people are now dead as at least four major wildfires are burning out of control near los angeles. >> not a single one even close to being contained as we've been seeing flames go through home after home officials saying they expect the death toll to rise as crews start sifting through the ashes. >> and it is only getting worse right now. 157,000 people as we speak are now under evacuation orders. the winds are still at hurricane strength, and that is what is fueling the destructive fires. as they are leaping. the largest is the palisades, is now close to 16,000 acres, at one point burning through about five football fields a minute. and as you can see, these fires are burning dangerously close to many iconic landmarks. so far that those have been spared. and when you look at downtown los angeles, but the reality, though, is what you see on your screen for thousands and just listen to that.

>> so, erin, we actually we took a look at that quickly. my team and i just went down to take a look. that's actually a road that we tried to go up into earlier to set up for this live report for you. i'll let him go ahead and show you that we drove up that. so we assume that this is this is homes that whatever is it that went up in flames is homes. there are definitely some kinds of structures that were down there. we're just looking at the map. we realize that this is this is a road that would dead end at the canyon. again, we're at the very eastern edge of the palisades fire, coming from the brentwood side of the 405 freeway. that that cuts los angeles north and south. looking west. so you're looking west into these hills, this wall of smoke. part of it is being caused by the incessant constant drops of water that you're seeing now, and a flame retardant. so we've seen at times, i believe, our record here was five different aircraft in the air at the same time. what they're trying to do, it seems from what we've been observing, erin, is

anchor erin burnett is in the pacific palisades. let's start first with erin. erin, i know you've been on the ground now for a couple of days. we're coming to you as this fire is threatening to move ever more eastward and toward more homes, more people's lives. what are you seeing? >> well, jessica, you know, i mean, it is incredible the devastation that already is, is everywhere. massive devastation. thousands of people desperately trying to get back into areas that have been completely razed and destroyed, just to even have a glimpse of their homes, forced to leave with nothing. but at this hour, the great fear is that this fire, which is only about 8 or 9% contained and, you know, we can see even even on streets here, you still see parts picking up on the ridges, the fire. and i know stephanie is seeing that in the distance in brentwood as well, but that the winds are going to pick up potentially to hurricane force over these next hours and that that fire is going to spread. it is already the most devastating in los angeles history and could get unbearably w

cnn's erin burnett is on the scene in los angeles for us. erin, you've been there all day long. tell us what you've been seeing. and is there a sense now that they are gaining some progress here in terms of dealing with that fire i start with a positive, abbie, because you say, is there a sense of positive? >> they have made some progress against some of the fires, and they've been trying to use a window. you know, you had winds for a bit this morning and then a period of calm. and they have been using that to try to establish basically a perimeter around as much of these fires as they can. not much progress, but they have been felt that they have made real progress. one firefighter right on the front line of the fire, telling me just a little bit ago, where we're standing in pacific palisades, actually just just up the street from me, i can see we can see live fire flames there, and you can see all the red over the hills. so these fires are still ongoing. and in the house we're in front of, actually, just a couple of hours ago, abbie, they had come if you can. i don't know if y

cnn's erin burnett is on the ground in hard-hit malibu. and, erin, obviously, as you've been reporting there, these most dangerous winds that that officials are watching for are expected to to start hitting within hours. do officials feel that the fire crews, that they are ready to go for this they do, but they know everything is at stake. >> caitlin. and we are starting to feel those winds pick up here, even just over the past couple of hours. we're starting to really notice it here in malibu. and you talk about that particularly dangerous situation, what they call the pds. that's only happened three times this fire season. and in those three times you got the eaton fire, you got the palisades fire. so those days have led to the massive fires that they are battling right now. and as we're feeling the winds pick up here, you've got we are within the palisades fire zone where we are in malibu. they are trying to protect areas that haven't burned where we are. you can see behind me complete devastation, but there is other parts of malibu her

cnn's erin burnett joins us live from altadena tonight.nd, erin, there's been a lot of uncertainty just over what the next few hours will bring. i mean, i can't even imagine what that that feels like for people who are just sitting at home waiting to see how these winds kind of determine the fate of their families. but but as this is happening with no rain in the forecast for the next few days, what are you hearing from officials that they're watching this evening? >> so tonight, obviously it's dark here now. and caitlin, where i'm standing off to my right is the san gabriel mountains, completely shrouded in darkness. but that is an area right here of real concern. those high winds, they expect to be here, and they're really now expecting it to be starting sort of 3:00, 330 in the morning. the fire crews we were with today are on high alert for that. they were dropping in anticipation of that. caitlin, across the mountain, big giant red strip. we saw at one point a fire retardant to try to establish a line. and then where we are now in the

erin, thank you so much. now. >> welcome to the whole story. i'm anderson cooper in topanga, california. this is the northern edge of the palisades fire, which began early tuesday morning. thousands of structures have burned. tens of thousands of acres have been destroyed. firefighters have been working around the clock. they're putting water down now on a fire that just has. they've been trying to battle for the last hour or so to try to protect a community nearby from here over the next hour. we want to tell you the story of these fires. what happened, how the fire moved so fast, what we know about how it started at this point, and the stories of people who had to flee for their lives. >> 18 million people are under a red flag warning. >> the national weather service is calling this a destructive and life threatening windstorm. >> a small spark could turn into an inferno in a matter of minutes. >> the warnings were ominous, frequent and at times dire. >> we knew that this was going to be an extreme event. they were talking a once in a decade

ering the disaster from every angle. let's go first to cnn's anderson cooper. he's in altadena, california. that's just northeast of los los angeles. anderson, give us the latest. what are you seeing? what are you hearing? >> yeah. the fire here obviously is not contained. it's not contained anywhere. they ran out of water here on this street. i'm on a mariposa. and. and glenn, they ran out of water about two hours or so ago. a little bit lost track of time. but this fire it had. we were on the previous corner. it had burned all the houses down there. pretty much. it is now spread up, moving uphill. this house has ignited. um, there's now this, the house next door. also. and now the attic. the roof is burning. firefighters say that that's one of the things they look for. once smoke starts billowing out of that attic window. in a situation like this where there's no water, that house is. that's just going to that house is going to be gone. so that house is on fire. this one is almost gone.

we'll go to erin burnett in just a moment. but first to anderson cooper, who is on the ground in l.a. anderson, the wind has been the antagonist of this whole episode, but they're worried now that it could be back tonight. what are you hearing? >> yeah. i mean, so the wind today, by the way, i'm at a staging area in the pacific palisades along the pacific coast highway. law enforcement personnel, firefighters. there is a battle going on right now. tonight in with six different fires. as you know, there's a new fire came up today. the kenneth fire started out as 50 acres. last estimate i heard about an hour ago. it's at a thousand acres. um, but the the the two biggest ones that the palisades fire and the eaton fire eden is what decimated altadena yesterday, where we were the the the palisades fire still going on here. i spent the day up in topanga, basically watching firefighters try to protect the community of topanga. residential homes. they're very up in the mountains, beautiful area, very a lot of winding small roads, swit
