israel and lebanon, and we are going to go to gaza, and i can show you that situation there where erin burnett is in southern israel, and this is the border here, gaza here, and egypt here, and she is not far from gaza here, and egypt here, and in this region here, and erin, what are you seeing now? >> all right. so we are just, just over a ridge from a major staging area from the israeli tank battalion, john. this particular tank battalion were in saturday among the first to go in saturday afternoon, and now staging and resupplying and they say they are ready. that is what we have seen, because we have been spending the time going up and down along this gaza border. right now, we are about three miles away from gaza border, itself, and as you and kate have been saying we are 10 miles from the egyptian border, and right here on the south, where there is massive staging of the israeli force, and when you are hearing that going by, those are all military vehicles. i will say, also though, they are bussing in the troops on buses, and literally coaches. so if you saying 50 or those in the last bit

. >> and i'm erin burnett in tel aviv. this hour the idf has been responding to gaza answering more rockets, hundreds of bombs of its own. i can tell you we can hear those thudding and you can feel it through your entire body. those thuds, even one just a few seconds ago. let's get straight to ashkelon, where there's been an on slougt of rockets. clarissa ward is there. what are you seeing? >> reporter: just moments ago, we were trying desperately to get your attention. the sirens went off. we heard a bunch of loud booms, rockets firing. they appeared to go right over us that time. you can see the night skylighting up with the flash of those rockets. we heard some iron dome intersections. this has been a relentless tempo. i mean, for the last three hours now, it has been very, very rare that you get a gap of ten minutes without another siren going off. people then trying to run for cover. i would say at this stage, most residents of ashkelon are staying in cover. we can hear some jets in the distance that you probably woul

erin burnett, thank you. back to cnn military analyst colonel cedric leighton. erin reported that six rockets broke through the iron dome. it's not infallible. talk through that. >> so basically, phil, what you see every system is vulnerable. i can't emphasize that enough. when you see the iron dome in full effect here, you are able to see it take out some of the incoming rockets. the problem that you have is they can handle about 80 rockets per battery. once you get beyond that, once the system is saturated you have a whole different situation here. and so you can tell, you know, when the rocket strikes occur, when hamas is doing -- conducting these rocket strikes, they can go all over israel and do this. most of the time these rocket strikes are intercepted. however, every time they saturate the system and the system isn't ready to take care of the trajectory as it comes to assess where it's going on any other anomaly you get an impact and the kinds of things you see in ashkelon and several other cities right around here. and the reason for that is the system i

erin burnett is joining us from tel aviv with more on this part of the story. what are we hearing from hamas about the other captives? >> reporter: and this is the crucial thing, right. as kayla said, we don't know what the exchange was. we may never. but we don't know right now. all we know is that hamas has put out a statement that claims they're working with what they call friendly countries to secure the release of other foreign nationals who are being held hostage in gaza. egypt, qatar, and others and you saw russia say tlag it was also engaged in negotiations with hamas. so that is how they categorize it. and qatar has had a history of broking deals with adversary foreign parties when it comes to hostages. so that is what we have from hamas. and, wolf, the question is, to your point, what is humanitarian? what is this meaning? you have two. will there be more. and as antony blinken said there are 10 more americans and 201 for hostages being held. the number the idf given was 203. so with natalie and judith release, that leaves 201 people still in the gaza

let's get to erin burnett live at a hospital in ashkelon. this is a hospital that got hit yesterday in the strikes that you were reporting from. and also that's treated hundreds of patients since the initial attack over the weekend. what are you seeing and hearing? >> reporter: yes, that's right. and it's very busy here, so we're in ashkelon. we hear the thuds of those strikes that you were referring to in gaza. a very busy morning for the idf forces. and here at this hospital, it was hit yesterday. 650 people actually were treated here for the actual attacks. 70 people came here yesterday as a result of the strikes we were reporting from. and as you can see behind us, it's busy. this is the er and the trauma unit entrance. but what you're seeing here is food and assistance for first responders. they say that they have been receive ing donation from all around israel ever since the strikes started. and that's what you're seeing behind us. so here in this hospital, obviously, used to being a target. they are accustomed to that. hundreds of pe

i'm erin burnett live in tel aviv, israel. moments ago, a large group of people were seen rallying for the opening of the rafah crossing, on the egypt border. you can see this, this is right outside that border. a few miles around that crossing, there is craters in front of it, we understand about 20 trucks, some of the drivers have told us they saw the egyptian moving concrete as if it was maybe the possibility of it opening, but subsequently cnn learned the rafah closing will not open today as had been anticipated. that sense of on the ground, and that terrain, that desert, gives you some perspective on where we stand right now. moments ago, we did hear from the u.n. secretary-general antonio guterres who is at the rafah border crossing on the egyptian side. so he is there. you got a u.n. compound on the other side, where we know people are better supplied than most places, but still with dwindling supplies. and, of course, he's standing where all the trucks loaded with aid are waiting to enter. >> behind these walls we have

i'm erin burnett, live here in tel aviv. there has been a delay in the humanitarian aid that has been expected and waiting on that gaza-egypt border. sources telling cnn that the rafah border crossing will not open today as was expected and advertised. u.s. officials anticipating the first convoy of humanitarian aid to cross the border this weekend. we'll see if that's the case. they're optimistic. they say they have a deal, but thus far we have heard that and it hasn't yet happened. this new video showing the line of trucks waiting to bring that aid into gaza. 20 trucks are expected to enter once the crossing opens. u.n. saying it needs 100 trucks a day to provide the adequate aid to the people inside gaza. in the last hour, we heard from antonio guterres at the rafah border crossing. here's what he said. >> behind these walls we have 2 million people that is suffering enormously. so this trucks are not just trucks, they are a lifeline. they are the difference between life and death for so many people in gaza. what we need

let's bring in cnn's erin burnett who's live in israel and co-hosting the show with me. erin, let's start with the scope of the humanitarian crisis because we're talking about hundreds of civilians killed in israel, hundreds now killed in gaza, many others trapped without food, without water or power all because of these brutal attacks by hamas. >> i mean, jake, it was an unbelievable tragedy. and as you speak, it is in your voice and in your heart, too. i know it is just a profound grief that is here and also a rage. and it is affecting obviously peel in israel, those innocent people who were killed and slaughtered, who were massacred. those are the fair and right words to use. it's now also affecting people in gaza. i mean today, jake, we were just a few miles from that border. and it almost becomes a background noise, the thuds of explosions in gaza. and on the other end there, of course, people who were affected, and as you said no food, no fuel, no electricity. israel says that's going to continue until the hostages are returned, and obviously we still have no word o

. >>> let's bring in cnn's erin burnett live from tel aviv. we have seen rockets flying over tel aviv tonight. does it feel as though the next phase of this war, this ground incursion is about to start? >> reporter: jake, you used the word feel. it's the right word. certainly from israelis we've been speaking to, that i interact with, there had been a resignation, as i said to you. now it's palpable. they believe it's imminent. there is a nervousness and a fear. this is the first time when someone in our crew went into a grocery store that the shelves were empty. that had not been the case. when you talk about people's reaction and people's fear, we're starting to see that now in a different way. again, that's anecdotal. that's what we've been interacting with. in terms of the rockets that you talk about, we have in tel aviv had more rockets come in today than any other day in the past week that i've been here. there have been several volleys over these past nfour or five hours, maybe 9 or 11, rockets at that time. so more today than any other

matthew, our colleague erin burnett is also standing by in tel aviv. we'll get back to her when we can. what can you tell us about what is happening? obviously the concerns continue. that thing could escalate to where there is a northern front and there might be some continued escalation between the israelis and hezbollah. what's the latest on your end? >> well, it's very tense up here in northern israel. as the country prepares for that widely anticipated ground offensive in gaza, the real focus of concern, i suppose in the region is what will happen in northern israel. just across the border in lebanon, which is just a short distance from here, hezbollah, the iranian-backed militia there have a vast arsenal of missiles. basically pointed in this direction. and if it decides to unleash those weapons in response to the land incursion into gaza by israeli forces, that will be a game-changer. the israelis have said they will strike back hard and they've warned the hezbollah militia not to take that step across the red line. they said they don't want the

from the lebanese, israel-lebanese border, and down towards the southern israeli border where erin burnett is with us once again. and erin, every time we have come to you, there have been troop and tank movements, and what are you hearing from the sold soldiers? >> all right. kate, we are by a staging corner near the gaza border, and near the egyptian border, and we saw another bus going in, and each one has a troop of about 50, and we have been searing them for hours here at this particular staging situation. we can see all of the staging here. and behind me over the hill, we saw six rockets in the past 20 minute, and those rockets were coming from hamas here, and they were intercepted by the iron dome. they were essentially come over the small town o f ofakim, and that is where we heard those rockets here. >> and this is not far from gaza which is egypt here. and now, nic robertson is over at sderot near gaza, and what y you seeing here, nic? >> yeah, john. typically this time of the day, sunset, there is a kick up in activity, and we are hearing it at the moment, and hearing the increas

first, let's go to cnn's erin burnett, joining us live from tel aviv right now. in, what are we learning about these freed hostages? >> reporter: wolf, we know there are two more hostages released tonight, that gives family reason to celebrate. nurit cooper, 79 years old, she's a teacher. she has been released along with yocheved lifshitz who is 85 years old, a photographer, and actually she was one of the founders of the kibbutz where both women were abducted from nir oz. ambulances were seen arriving from rafah, from gaza, from the rafah crossing into egypt soon after the hostage release had been negotiated and obviously there's speculation that perhaps these two women could be inside them. they're being taken to medical facilities to be evaluated and their families will be waiting for them there. the israeli government interestingly, wolf, is specifically thanking the red cross for this as well as egypt. egypt is the main facilitator. you will remember for the american hostages on friday that the facilitator was qatar. in this case, thanking egypt and the red c

let's go to erin burnett who's also in tel aviv tonight. what more are we learning about the back and forth over who's behind the deadly hospital blast in gaza? >> wolf, as you know, the israeli defense forces have put out detailed explanations of signal interceptions where members of islamic jihad discussed hitting the hospital. they're going to great lengths. they understand what's at stake. these are the trajectories. they're putting out a map of all the misfired rockets since this war began 12 days ago. obviously, that's not going to convince people in the arab world about what happened but they obviously feel this is very crucial. talking to sources in the idf, they have great frustration. they say when people talk about what happened to babies on october 7th, we had to put out the proof of what happened to those babies. what happens at the hospital, we have to put out the proof and they feel that the world believes hamas without question and that they are always forced to a double standard, but nonetheless, the foreign minister and cn

my colleague erin burnett is live in tel aviv, israel. and we have major developments that we're following right now. a short time ago, israel's military announced it is increasing air strikes beginning today and says it will launch a ground incursion when conditions are right. this is new cnn video from just outside the gaza border. dozens of israeli tanks, armored personnel carriers, even bulldozers are gathered in this area and other groupings are nearby. some of the video you're seeing right there, after days of agonizing delays, humanitarian aid has rolled into gaza for the first time since the war began two weeks ago. the rafah border crossing between egypt and gaza is closed again, after the 20-truck convoy made its way through. relief agencies say many more massive shipments of water, fuel, and food are needed in the area and the gaza hospital system is teetering on the verge of collapse. >>> an american mother and daughter are on their way home. judith and natalie are reuniting with family today at an israeli military base. natal

erin burnett spoke with some of the heroes of the community. >> you are at the gate they tried to come in the vehicle. we saw all the burned-out cars they used to block. you were able to stop that. they burst through the gate. and we have footage of some of this from the security cameras. >> exactly. >> they were actually shooting antitank missiles on the gate. there was actual carnage going on outside the gate. people were trying to rush in from the party, people who were just driving. >> they were trying to come in for safety. >> the gate was closed. they could not see the terrorists. they ran to the gate and were being shot at from short distance. >> the terrorists at the gate were trying to comment. they were picking them off as they run in. >> they were taking cover around the gate from the outside. >> and firing on them. >> and firing on civilians that tried to run through the gate. they went down to make sure they were dead. they were engaging. there was a small bomb shelter outside the gate. some of the party members were hiding there. you can see a group of terrorists going in

let's go to cnn's erin burnett who is in tel aviv, israel. you are in a city that has been pummelled by hamas rockets. how extensive is the damage that you have seen? >> reporter: you know, jake, this is a situation where the city is under at least what we experienced today, it was pretty much non-stop in terms of incoming rockets. you would hear israeli bombs in gaza. we would see the smoke. you could smelt it, that acrid, oily smell of war. and then there would be the incoming response out of gaza. you know, look, obviously they intercept both of them. but it is the randomness that strikes you. you saw when they did break through, or only partially were taken down by the iron dome. we talked to some locals and found where to go, an apartment build bring people had just been inside. it was still smoking when we got there, and fire was going on. and then as we were there, sirens go off again. of course, we take cover. even first respondering were running to take cover. in this case, they were running into the bottom of a burning building to t

i'm jim acosta in washington joined by my colleague erin burnett who is live for us in tel aviv, israelwe begin with the latest in israel's war in hamas. israel is planning for a possible ground incursion into gaza. israel carried out a rare air strike in the west bank earlier today hitting a mosque. the idf said it thwarted an eminent terror attack. the palestinian authority calls it a dangerous escalation. erin? >> jim, the israeli military confirms that its troop had a class with hamas fighters. it's significant because this happened inside gauza. they're saying that there was fighting. it's just the second time that israeli forces have confirmed that they were operating inside gaza since the hamas terrorist attacks two weeks ago. cnn journalist has witnessed at least 14 trucks crossing from egypt into gaza. that's desperately needed humanitarian aid. it's a drop in the bucket, though, but it is something. and for almost two weeks, there had been nothing. an official at the main hospital says the deteriorating conditions there are catastrophic and other hospitals say they are simply

cnn's erin burnett just arrived in tel aviv this morning. back and forth strikes have led to another night of unease in israel. now we're learning rockets were launched tonight from syria into israeli territory, which of course is just adding to the already volatile situation. >> reporter: all right, jake, when they talk about the worry about this expanding, the war expanding and also expanding within israel to multiple fronts, the israeli defense forces are saying that there were rockets fired from syrian territory to israeli territory. they don't say how many, whether there were any injuries, but they said that happened today. over the past 24 hours there have been skirmishes with hezbollah forces up in the north, up by lebanon, and down of course by gaza, you had a barrage of rockets. you talk about ashkelon, that is what we saw here in the early hours of the evening, the sky lit up. the iron dome, of course, did protect, very few if any broke through. we don't hear about any injuries, but it was a barrage. hamas said 5:00 local time they

i'm erin burnett in israel alongside my friend john berman in new york. the head of the israeli defense forces told his commanders tonight that, quote, we'll enter the gaza strip. not a question. a definitive statement. a spokesperson for the idf saying they are increasing airstres to gaza to minimize risk to troops for the next stage of the war. they've been running on some days at more than 200 strikes and they'll increase that number. they saw dozens of tanks, personnel, carriers, as well as bulldozers massed at the border. and we've seen those bulldozers, massive military ones designed for an urban incursion they will be facing. this video represents just one of several grouping that's our team witnessed. altogether, cnn saw hundreds of tanks and armored vehicles. this comes as the world health organization warns that the limited amount of supplies allowed to cross into gaza from egypt today is not enough. it was about 20 trucks. they say they need about 100 every day. the director general saying that the hospitals inside gaza are already at their, qu
