let's bring in erin mclaughlin. she joins us from reunion island. what are investigators doing there at this hour? >> reporter: hi,randi. for the past few days, choppers have been in the skies scouring the beach, the same cleaning crews that found that original piece of debris. they are analyzing the current patterns around the island in the hopes of being able to pinpoint other places where debris might potentially pop up. that's seen as important, because each piece of potential debris that they find could give very important clues, not only to the point of origin but also to what caused mh-370 to come down. the search really seen as incredibly important. this is all, of course, happening on a very tiny little island, a tourist attraction. they are not only dealing with mh-370. they are also dealing with a volcano erupting as i speak. they have had to evacuate the upper reaches of that volcano. providing for some spectacular pictures. so far, volcano not posing any sort of dangers to the areas, the lower parts of the island. randy? >> that is some

on reunion island this week in the indian ocean is a flaperon and that's where we find cnn's erin mclaughlin. >> reporter: poppy, the piece of debris left the island last night. it arrived in france today. real forensic work though won't begin until wednesday. and air technicians really have a number of priorities. they're not only going to be looking to be able to see definitively whether or not this piece of debris is in fact from mh-370 but they're also going to be analyzing the sea life that has grown on the debris in the hopes of being able to pinpoint its origin. they're also going to be looking at the damage sustained to the debris in the hopes of gleaning clues as to how the plane may have gone down. now, as for the island the search continues for the wreckage. cleaning crews still combing the beaches, trying to find more debris. they're also analyzing the current around the island. the hope of finding more places where debris may be because each piece of debris really giving them important clues, not only as to how the plane went down but also to where the actual wreckage may be. po

erin mclaughlin is on reunion island and following the latest in the search efforts. he search effort is intensifying around reunion island. france has sent in a helicopter, surveillance plane, as well as people to search the shores. now when this was all first announced, reunion island really didn't have the resources to be able to conduct a thorough search. i was actually out on a search and rescue boat and the people on that boat were volunteers and they were mostly relying on word-of-mouth. now that we know that that flaperon, according to the french, is most likely from mh-370, they have sent in additional resources. now, malaysia has sent in, as you mentioned, their own team. prior to that they conducted their own searches of the shore line and transportation ministry saying they have found a number of items, including window materials, aluminum and they say is from a plane. although they are not directly linking that to mh-370 at this time. we know, according to the malaysians, they handed over all of those items to the french and the french are saying that they
