. >> joining us now from tel aviv, erin mclaughlin. erin, great seeing you.t are israeli officials saying about sinwar's death today? >> reporter: a short while ago, jose, there was a briefing by the spokesperson for the israeli military for the international media, and this spokesperson, sort of, laid out a timeline and gave new details in terms of what exactly unfolded in that section of rafa on wednesday. it was wednesday late morning, according to this spokesperson, when there was a routine israeli military operation on patrol in the area. they noticed three militants. two of the militants appeared to be concealing themselves in blankets, shielding the third militant wearing a vest. now, according to the spokesperson, thought to be yahya sinwar. a ferocious battle ensued, according to the spokesperson. grenades were launched at the israeli military by -- from the direction of sinwar. at one point in this battle, which lasted for many hours, sinwar became separated from the other two, entered a building, and that is when, according to the spokesperson, the

us now, nbc news chief foreign correspondent richard engel who's in tire, lebanon for us, and erin mclaughlinaviv. erin, i'll start with you and the remembrances, what's it like there today? >> reporter: i was just at what's called hostage square here in tel aviv where thousands of israelis had gathered to remember what happened on october 7th. many of them were in tears. it was an emotional ceremony. one of many ceremonies to take place today across israel. today earlier in the morning, at exactly 6:29 a.m., israelis gathered at the site of the nova music festival to remember the exact minute hamas militants crossed the border, storming the festival and the kibbutz scene killing innocent israelis. and that emotion, that sadness is also compounded by anger. i have been speaking to many israelis here, and they continue to be angry. they feel that this government is not prioritizing the release of the hostages in this war. and to that end, there were hundreds of israelis marching through the streets of jerusalem today, not far from the israeli prime minister's home, demanding just that. and it

. >> joining us now from tel aviv is nbc's erin mclaughlin. , what more can you tell us about the situation on the ground in gaza? >> reporter: well, jose, we're just hearing from cogat, which is a division within the israeli military responsible for humanitarian aid to gaza in a tweet on "x" posting that they did deliver aid to northern gaza, which is hard hit today. they're writing 50 trucks carrying humanitarian aid including food, water, medical supplies, and shelter equipment provided by jordan were transferred today to northern gaza through the allan b. bridge crossing and west crossing as part of our commitment to deliver humanitarian aid. we are working to confirm this information. it would be the first aid to arrive in northern gaza where there is an israeli military operation under way in some two weeks. earlier i was speaking to andrew miller, the former deputy assistant secretary of state for israeli and palestinian affairs. he left that post back in june. i asked him about the situation in gaza, and he called the humanitarian situa

joining us is erin mclaughlin. what do we know about all of these developments, erin?rter: they are potentially significant. the deputy chief of hezbollah and he is one of the few surviving leaders of the militant group. today, he released a statement that aired on lebanese television and in that statement, he said that les blah -- hezbollah is open to the lebanese government to secure a cease-fire and perhaps most significant is what he didn't say. he did not say on the condition that there is a cease-fire in gaza. long seen as a sticking point in this conflict. and it comes on the very same day that israeli announced an expansion of its ground invasion, currently concentrated in the west, now expanding east for the first time deploying israeli reserves to that end. we also heard from the israeli defense minister say they likely killed hassan nasrallah last week. rockets are fired the last 24 hours toward northern israeli and three making it through israeli's defense system and striking an area but no casualties from that attack. collectively all of these developments

let's get more now from nbc news correspondent erin mclaughlin in tel aviv and msnbc military analystd colonel jack jacobs. erin, what more can you tell us about the new american presence there in israel and what the israelis say about responding to iran? >> reporter: yeah, well, that iran response was first reported by "the washington post," sourcing two israeli officials with knowledge that israel had -- was going to limit its retaliatory strikes against iran to military targets. the article was actually sent to us by the israeli prime minister's office along with a statement saying, quote, we listened to the opinions of the united states, but we will make our final decisions based on our national interests. nevertheless, here in israel, this is being viewed as a potential move to possibly close this chapter with iran and sort of de-escalate the situation in terms of retaliatory strikes back and forth between the two countries. and it comes as that missile defense system has arrived here in israel. that confirmed by both the pentagon as well as israeli officials. i was speaking to a

i want to bring in nbc's erin mclaughlin in tel aviv. what more can you tell us, erin?. that's right. just a short while ago, israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu issued a statement to the people of lebanon. let me read you what he had to say, saying we have damaged hezbollah's capabilities, we have eliminated thousands of terrorists including nasrallah himself, a reference to the late hassan nasrallah, who was assassinated by an israeli air strike. netanyahu goes on to say, nasrallah's successor and the successor of nasrallah's successor today hezbollah is weaker than it has been in many years. a reference there to this continued campaign. israeli military targeting senior hezbollah leaders with air strikes. we know that last week the israeli military was targeting a man by the name of hashem safieddine. he was nasrallah's cousin and they were targeting him in a district to the south of beirut. earlier today we heard from the israeli defense minister say that he was likely killed in that attack and it appears to be who the israeli prime minister is referencing in

nbc's erin mclaughlin is reporting from tel-aviv. courtney kube is at the pentagon for us. erin, israel's iron dome is world famous, but it is not perfect. what can you tell us about these attacks from lebanon? >> reporter: yeah, that's right, chris. that imperfection was on full display last night when that hezbollah drone apparently went undetected through israeli air space, slamming into the galani base to the north of israel as the troops there were eating dinner, killing four of them, injuring scores more. i was speaking to a former israeli commander of israel's air defense. he was telling me just how challenging it is to try and detect and prevent drones from entering israel's air space and conducting these attacks. he said they're extremely small. they're extremely slow moving, and they fly at low altitudes. if you can't detect them, you can't intercept them. take a listen to what he had to say. >> we are not prepared enough for that situation, and the fact is, that's our enemies. recognize that, saw that, and they're using lots and lots of drones and uavs from iran,

chris. >> erin mclaughlin, thank you. >>> the anniversary of the attack is also being marked here in new york. nbc's george solis is at columbia university. what are you hearing from people there, george? >> reporter: on this grim day, october 7th. we have seen a number of demonstrations of protests, even leading up to to the day. at columbia, things have remained peaceful. a number of demonstrators oulds outside the hall. the hostages have yet to come home, but no closer to a cease fire deal. talking to students on the ground, they say there's moment of escalation when pro palestinian protesters set up on the opposite side of the where the students are and there's a current art installation commemorating and remembering the lives lost. there were moments of tension. i cannot underscore the presentation of nypd officials around campus to make sure these situations don't escalate further than they need to. for a lot of jewish students and faculty, today was not a day for them to reminisce about the past protests and demonstrations and violence that they saw over the last year. it was

nbc's erin mclaughlin is in tel aviv. nbc's ali vitali in washington. and david ignatius is "washington post" foreign affairs columnist and an msnbc contributor. thank you for joining me today. erin, a line in "the washington post" today said that in israel, quote, war has become the background noise of whatever future is coming. i wonder how you would describe the experience of being in israel today, such a solemn day? >> reporter: well, chris, what happened on october 7th remains an open and gaping wound that for many israelis only deepens with each passing day that the hostages are not returned. today, we saw a number of ceremonies across israel, thousands gathering despite wartime restrictions, including where i am now at hostage square in the heart of tel aviv. thousands here to listen to the counts of family members of those that were left behind there in gaza. many openly weeping at the memory of what happened on october 7th. now, at the weekend, we visited kibbutz near oz, the hardest-hit of the kibbutz. nearly a quarter of the residents near oz

joining us now is air reason mclaughlin in tel aviv, along with hagara. ladies, thank you for being here. erinhis new warning getting in israel and for groups advocating for palestinians? >> reporter: well, ana, today i spoke to a human rights activist, that runs an ngo based in central gaza. he told me he has field workers in northern gaza. he was describing just a desperate situation all across the strip, but especially concentrated in a refugee catch where israel is focusing its military operations. he told me that no one can leave. no food in and no food out. take a listen. >> all the people there, anyone move they're shooting them. so the people are stuck. no one can move. and they're cutting every, every, everything, like there is no water, no food, no medicine, no anything. >> reporter: you can hear the desperation there in his voice. i asked for his reaction to that 30-day notice that the u.s. has given to israelis to improve the situation. he said that 30 days is simply too much time. he needs action now. the israeli officials here say that they have received that letter from the unit
