we begin with nbc's erin mclaughlin. as we wait for that update from the ntsb on the deadly potomac crash. what are we expecting from this briefing, erin? >> well, chris, it's been 15 days since that tragic crash. and yet there are still many unanswered questions. central to answering them all is the black box that we understand from the ntsb has been recovered from that black hawk crash site. in terms of the black box for the black hawk, it includes both the cockpit voice recorder and the flight data recorder. we understand from ntsb sources that the black box recovered was an older model and therefore lacking timestamps. and so in the past two or so weeks, investigators have been sort of piecing together a timeline critical to the investigation, pulling together many sources. now, watching this press conference that's about to unfold, undoubtedly will be the loved ones of the 67 lives lost that tragic night, including tim liley, the father of sam liley. sam liley was the pilot of the american eagle jet. tim liley happen

. >> joining us now nbc news correspondent erin mclaughlin. rin, give us a little bit more about what you learned today. >> well, this was a critical update, katie, from the ntsb. you know, they've been spending the last 15 days compiling a detailed timeline of exactly what happened down to the split second prior to that collision. and now the ntsb says they are looking at the possibility that the crew on board the blackhawk was operating off of bad data, and that that could have somehow contributed to the collision. bad data relating specifically to the altitude in which they were flying. as part of that detailed timeline, the ntsb chair pointed to specific communication between the pilot that was flying the blackhawk and the instructor. 100 foot discrepancy in terms of the height, their altitude at one point that went unexplained, and then further communication minutes prior to the crash, in which the pilot of the blackhawk indicated that they were descending down to 200ft, 200ft. being within aviation regulations. the crash, according to nts

that was nbc's erin mclaughlin reporting. it is just about the top of the hour right now.e, ali vitali, still with us. and joining the conversation, we have nbc news senior executive editor for national security david rohde joins us this morning. our top story this morning, the senate judiciary committee will vote this morning on patel's nomination to lead the fbi. patel will likely move out of committee on a party line vote during the panel's 9 a.m. meeting. senators are scheduled to speak before the vote is held. if patel gets necessary the necessary votes, it would tee up a full senate vote to confirm him by next week. this comes just days after the panel's ranking member, democratic senator dick durbin, sent a letter to the doj inspector general alleging patel may have directed the recent purge of fbi officials before being confirmed to lead the agency. in the letter, durbin details accusations from multiple sources and says if they are true, patel would have perjured himself during his confirmation hearing last month. but republicans seem unfazed by the new allegation
