erin mcpike is a reporter for real clear politics. , does it seem like the president did what he needed to do to energize that constituency today? >> for the most part, yes, at least in comparison to mitt romney yesterday. president obama simply said he would sign a dream act if it made it to his desk, which deals with a smaller portion of the nation's illegal immigrants. not all 11 million of them. so we heard from a lot of republicans today who said that while president obama continues to support the dream act, he didn't go much further than that. it energizes the latino community to a certain degree, but not 100%. i mean, he's been saying that his door has been open for three and a half years if congress would like to work with him. bit a lot of republicans started chiding him today saying that's really not enough and doesn't show a ton of leadership. >> to state the obvious, 9% of those who came out to vote in '08, if that gets boosted to 10, 11, 12%, there in would lie the margin of victory in a close race overall. >> yes. and if

joining us from washington, erin mcpike, a national political reporter for "real clear politics". erin, so both sides are not standing real well among some of these working class folks in pennsylvania right now, huh? >> that's right because both president obama and mitt romney are seen by many of these voters as elitists. that's why you're seeing the obama campaign focus so heavily on mitt romney's time in the private sector, running bain capital, the private equity firm because they want to show these white working class voters that they don't think mitt romney is on their side. jon: does president obama need to win them to in order to win this election? >> he doesn't need to win them but he does need to do better among those voters. there's a recent poll by "the washington post" that showed mitt romney beating president obama among the white working class by about 20 points. you see the obama campaign focusing on other demographic groups like women, like, students, young people, youth. and among hispanic voters. they're focusing on those groups to shore up each of those demograph

erin mcpike, mo elafy and susan del percio join us. thank you for being here. a new roll call article talks about a group of undecided female voters sponsored by walmart. here are a few takeaways. the power of the first famililess image, more women discussed president obama's daughters than some of his most pronounced policy issues. and many voters were risk averse and said three years wasn't enough to turn things around and romney remains largely undefined. what is your takeaway, susan? it doesn't sound like a lot of positives for the romney camp. >> and yet you can say that because he's still largely undefined, it means that people really aren't paying attention yet and for all the negativity coming out of the obama campaign, it's not sticking either. right now, those women say, yes, i know he's a businessman, a family man, but they don't know much more about him. that's actually to his advantage. if he can keep it or the election becomes just a referendum on president obama, that's going to be more difficult for team obama to overcome. >> erin, what do you m

erin mcpike. my apologies if we break away for the conference., what do you do politically for the latest job numbers, how do you frame your argument positively. >> the numbers were challenging, you have to be level with the american people. you have to set the baseline at where we came from. where we're going. you have to be clear you have to be precise. you have to send a pleng that you have things under control and you're moving us in the right direction. right now, numbers come and go, alex, as you know, but it is the confidence, do people feel like tomorrow will be a better day than today? that will be the singular issue, what people will judge the president on the economy. if he does those things, he can turn this around. >> mara, here's the president in his weekly address led. let's listen to this. >> it's not lost on anybody that this is an election year. but we've got responsibilities that are bigger than an election. we've got responsibilities to you. with so many people struggling to get by. now is not the time to play politics, now is
