ernest hemingway. maybe they defector that they didn't like for some reason, but hard to believe that anybody in the 1990s was saying, hey, we need to go after hemingway and blacken his name. i think this was a by-product of another kind of operation. anyway, so then i looked at golos. i wondered did he get it right? did he report what happened accurately? he would not be oicer who had gone to a meeting, spoken in very general terms to somebody he had met a few times and then went back to the embassy and said, hey, i just recruited jones. he said he will do anything i ask of him. and then they send the cable off to their headquarters. so i wondered was golos this kind of guy who would have exaggerated his accomplishment? and the answer i came up with was probably not. golos was a really interesting guy. he was an old bolshevik. in the early 1900s he's an illegal actor for the bolsheviks in russia. he gets captured by the czarist police. they exile him to siberia. he escapes by going east. this is a pre

i mean this is a long ball hitter who doesn't need an ernest hemingway to pad out his resume. so i concluded that it was not likely that golos got it wrong. that, you know, he probably did have the meeting with ernest, we don't have ernest's side. let me be clear about that. only have one source but it's not likely they got it wrong or needed to exaggerate it for any reason. so how can you explain this? so why would ernest say, yes, to the kgb especially in january 1941 when the soviet union doesn't look too good to motion people on the left. that's the period at which hitler and stalin are in bed together. what the explanation i came up with is is pretty much three words and it's the spanish civil war. in the mid '30s, this was a really passionate cause for many people, something like the vietnam war in this country, you were either for it or against it. there wasn't much in between and ernest went to spain three times as a correspondent and he saw this as one of the defining struggles of his time. it was conservatism religious, fascism on the one hand. it was the forces of de

so what do we have at the end of this day looking at ernest hemingway at the end of world war ii? the fbi and hoover as you might of gathered by now were not natural friends. and hoover said, you know, ernest is just the wrong guy. he heard all about what's going on in cuba. he said i cannot think of somebody who is more ill suited towards this kind of work than ernest hemingway? he wrote down a couple reasons. drinking, judgment, politics, and whatnot. by the way the fbi kept an eye on him even in mayo clinic just before he died. they looked at hemingway and came to the conclusion that this is somebody we really shouldn't have as a formal part of our organization. kgb does one memo in washington. they got a lot of oss memos and some fbi memos but not this one. they tried their hand at it. nobody really got a whole lot out of ernest. ernest as i say it's something he devoted a lot of energy to. but it may have been a dramatic story, but it didn't have dramatic results. there just wasn't a lot of product at the end of the day. only a story i really like to tell. so that's about it.

ernest even though he didn't do a lot of writing in cuba, he still did a lot of reading and you see him at the finka with one of his books. another hemingway pastime is drinking and here's the -- poor shot of la floridida. the fourth wife at the end next to the bartender. that's mary welch. when you're sober enough you go fishing and ernest is always looking to catch the biggest fish and literally and figuratively make the biggest splash. fishing occurs on this gorgeous boat called the pilar. the pilar was built in brooklyn, new york, in the 19 30s ernest at this point is already quite well off from his writings and so he has a boat built for himself. and here she is. she's quite something. ernest fancies himself the master mariner, here he is at the wheel. the gentleman on the right was the inspiration for the old man and the sea. ernest loves to go fishing with guns, not just rocks and there's all kind of firearms on the pilar. here he is pretty much in the mid to late 30s and i think that's a top submachine gun many but i can't tell because he's aiming it straight at me. so he has a remarkable circle of friends. he has bar men and prost

it's ernest hemingway on the left and on the right is elaine fischer, known as pinky, who was robert capa's english girlfriend in the spring of 1944. and capa had decided to have a big party for hemingway in london. this was about a month before d-day. and it lasted until the--the liquor ran out about 4 am. hemingway landed in the hospital because the--he was offered a ride home by a doctor who immediately drove into a water tank. hemingway went through the windshield and into the hospital. and two days later, capa and pinky went to see him. so capa made this picture for life magazine, which was published as a full page but i kept the other one for myself. c-span: did you know this man? >> guest: yes. i met him--that was the night i met him actually. we also saw each other at mont-saint-michel during the war because after d-day, six weeks later, i went off to--to normandy myself. i just couldn't stand the idea of assigning photographers at their own peril day after day to cover combat and i wanted to learn something about it. i had no real business going to normandy, but i--i just--i
