i do want to disagree with my friend errol on one thing he said. i disagree that doj has been acting with great urgency. yes, they have charged over 800 people, that is important, that is almost entirely literally at ground level. of those 800 people one of them, one of the 800 people were not physically present at the capitol scene that's enrique tarrio the leader of the proud boys who was caught on wire taps planning the attack. there has been no progress into the upper echelons of power. there are people other than donald trump who are important here, we know there's been search warrants on the lawyers, but doj in my view has been slow, very, very slow, and i think to their own detriment. >> i think that the committee is also looking to perhaps have hearings where they explore the role that extremist groups had. that is part of the reporting we have had. errol, i'm wondering what else do you think the committee needs to put forward in the way of evidence or witnesses that might spur doj to pursue prosecution. >> well, look, i think they are unde

why is this significant, errol?> it's significant in part because what donald trump has said in some of his followers had strongly suggested is that, well, this was a political demonstration that got out of hand. the president acted responsibly, the disturbance was quelled and that he was ready for it and he did everything that he was supposed to. the january 6th committee has painted a very different picture which is now being confirmed which is that allow there was abundant evidence that there could be violence, that there would be violence, there were these incendiary speeches delivered by the president and his followers at the rally, it turns out that there were no provisions made to put the national guard on alert and to defend the capitol. i mean, it's startling, it's stunning, it's completely -- well, it's 180 degrees from what donald trump has said in the past and it's one more piece of evidence, i think, that this was not just an accident. this was not just a legitimate rally that got out of control. >> mer

what is the takeaway for you, errol?e takeaway there are elements of the democratic base, young voters, black voters who are not interested in what they're seeing. they don't like what they're seeing. there are all kinds of economic problems. the top concerns in that same poll are the economy and jobs and inflation which is basically the same issue, right? it's the economy. they are holding the president accountable for that, as they should. and it's not looking good for him. the i mean, the brighter spot, of course, when you match him up against almost anybody, or against nobody, you get very different outcomes. against somebody, he's not doing so badly. the idea being joe biden in the eyes of many voters is not the right candidate, except for all of the others. >> we'll talk about the trump factor in a second because that's fascinating almost as a separate issues but when you look at the numbers among the democrats, too, you ask them what's the reason for them not to approve. the number one reason is age. age and then

let's bring in errol lewis. appreciate you that donald trump or those close to him have reminded witnesses or potential witnesses in the high-profile case that loyalty is important to the former president. did that revelation surprise you? do you expect there might be consequences? >> good morning, boris. i was a little surprised at how brazen some of these alleged outreach efforts were. it doesn't surprise me at all that anybody who is facing possible criminal exposure might if possible try to send a word to a hostile witness. well, look, please don't do me in. on the other hand, they knew the whole world would be watching this. they had to know that people who are under oath are going to testify truthfully under oath. there is a handful of people pretty disreputable people who are lie and ignore subpoenas and take on legal exposure. rudy giuliani has been suspended from the practice of law. but regular people, regular staffers, other people, i think it is pretty brazen to try to get a message to them and eithe

>> do you think, errol, that it raises his criminal exposure at all? >> what we saw last night? not necessarily. i mean, we've seen a case that was built up over weeks and months and we now know that he was, in fact, behind so much of this. on the other hand the very key question about whether or not he can be prosecuted, i think in some ways is sort of superceded by what are the rest of us going to do, whether or not the president gets into a long protected multiyear fight over whether or not he can be prosecuted, i think the question on the table is what happens in the midterms? what happens in 2024? is congress -- let's keep in mind this is a hearing for a congress that may then take up some legislation, tighten up some of the electoral count act questions, make sure that it's only a ministerial role that the vice president is playing. tighten things up so that this never happens again. i think that's probably the most important part of all of this. whether or not donald trump has to face a judge and jury behind his actions here a lesser question, i think. >> what surprised y
