alan simpson and erskine bowls said it's the only acceptable outcome for the markets. they're trying to immunize themselves as being for the responsible thing or legitimately trying to pressure the committee to go big because they want them to. you asked about revenue. democrats have drawn their line in the sand saying we already cut a lot of discretionary spending in the last round of debt reduction that took place over the summer. we're not doing anymore of that. we're certainly not going to cut medicare and social security if we won't have some give from republicans on raising taxes. that's where some of the cryptology comes in. lots of republicans are for raising revenue but not in the context of raidsing taxes. they might be for raising revenue in the context of some broad-based tax reform where probably not this committee but the tax-writing committees in congress at a future time close in the future attack the tax code, simplify it, get some revenue out of it and lower rates and pour it into debt reduction. >> woodruff: you were telling me that could be a place

panel that was convened, it was set up by praums, alan simpson, former senator of wyoming republican, erskine bowles, a democrat. it did call for tax increases. it did call for cutting benefits to social security and medicare. it did call for sweeping tax reform. is there a prospect of some revival of simpson/bowles now? >> yes. i believe this is a contrarian view, but we have a good chance of actually getting the big package, big deficit reduction in 2012 for two reasons -- three reasons, really. first, the knives that i mentioned that were over our heads, the bush tax cuts expire in 2013. sequestration goes into effect in 2013. now that seems a year and a month away. but as we get closer and closer and closer, the pressure on both parties to come together in the middle, provided we don't remove one of those knives, like taking defense off the table, is going to be stronger and stronger. second, the republican primaries will end right now the republican primary the candidates and then their senate and congressional supporters to the right. you know, all of them said they wouldn't be for a do

that is one of the rigs that erskine -- one of the reasons that erskine could give them a reduction ine capital gains rate and we could both agree on a child tax credit and more credit for adopting children and special needs children, because the work was done. i sought a hilarious article in one of the press outlets, primarily conservative ballot, showing that nothing we did have anything to do with balancing the budget. they and they pointed to a congressional budget office study starting in -- looking in 1997-2001, the net effect of all of that just on the numbers was to add $10 billion to the debt, which is like 3.5 cents talking about the numbers today. all they did is prove how important a vote in 1993 was. that was the work that did not% of balancing the budget. -- they did 90% of balancing the budget. but the american people -- this is probably my fault although i did my best -- and maybe they never understood, there was a difference between invest and grow economics and trickle-down economics. and so in 2001, in the face of all the evidence of war work better, we went back to
