today we got to thinking about etfs.e to do the work that normally goes into buying an individual name, right? but that thinking may hurt your overall returns big-time. here are five-year returns on some of the most popular etfs. the ishares, oil equipment and services index, up over five years. the pharma index up about 42%. these are five-year returns. the transport index is actually down 1% over five years. so 29%, 42%, not bad. but when we take a closer look at what is inside these baskets, the best performer in each of these etfs, blows away the names. look at the oil etf. fmc technologies is up 203% in five years. allergan, up 55%. still, outperformance nonetheless. the transports, which are down 1% over five years, if you bought unp, union pacific instead of the etf, 115% versus 1%. the point is this, while etfs may be easier to invest in, and yeah, safer, because maybe they go out of business, whatever it is, you can also leave a lot of money on the table. let us bring in mike, manager of the wasatch long/short f

not all etfs are created equal. of the all request week here on "mad money," images for a cause tweeted, wondering why i embraced the gld, the gold etf and not any other etfs, it's a great question. i think that most of the exchange traded funds are doing a disservice to those that buy them. they are often grouped together to play the hottest trend or are offsetting day trading, but the gld is not one of those etfs, they are not risk on and risk off, it tracks the price of gold. what makes the gld better than the metal? buying gold is not easy, you have to store it usually in a depository bank, and it costs you money. take it home and try to hide it somewhere. of course, you can buy coins and i like those as an asset class, but the markup on coins above the raw price of gold, outrageous, and you have to hide them. you can buy the gold miners but the gold miners are having a great difficulty capitalizing on the 11-year rise in gold, because the expense of mining has become tough and the easy finds have been had. and

look at this cleaned up version of the daily chart so we can focus on the tlt etf. real warning signs are in the rsi and the forced index in the bottom. the price action of the bonds has not been pretty either. we see here, look at this, the tlt has a ceiling of 118 and all above where the tlt went out at 127. that is resistance and it makes it tough for them to move they have to crash through barrier after barrier, at the same time, there are fewer and fewer levels of support underneath the tlt, and they are spread much further apart, so if it drops through one, it's a long way to go before the next support level breaks in. where the tlt is right now is the last floor. if it drops beneath that level, the floor is not until 112 and then another one at 108, collins would short the tlt, forget another close at 116, because people follow the charts i'm telling you will see a water fall, a land slide if it takes the fall. this one has to do with volume. these bars on the left side of the chart, they measure how many volume there has been in the given price range. you se
