schwab announced the 50 etf funds it owns along with 90 non-schwab etf funds would be commission freeding platform. they're not the first to do this. fidelity offers i-shares free on its platform. and vanguard has commission free etfs on its own platform l sw. schwab is likely the broadest announcement yet of free commissions. schwab was late to this etf party. vanguard got in early and collected a lot of assets. schwab has come out swinging with a series of low cost etfs. besides commissions, a separate war being waged around expense ratios. they're also dropping. schwab charges only .04% for its broad market etf. that's 40 cents on $1,000. that's peanuts. the biggest etf, the i-shares s&p 500 charges .9%. a lot charges 1%. these are gathering morassettes at the expense of the mutual fund business. $1.4 trillion is now under management, scott, growing 25% a year for these etfs. i'm going to be at the index universe etf conference next week. it's the biggest one. we'll have more news. and this year one etf provider at least will announce a major deal with a 401(k) platform. that would

there are some etfs that are, you know, tremendous etfs, really, but they just don't have enough interest generated by market making firms as well as the public. this one does have enough. it trades six figure, thousands of shares per day. and then if you want to do go for more, you could goal over there with jpmorgan, the mlp etf. the master limited partnerships that everybody was so concerned with, they might be going away, this one is up 15% year to date. it pains about a 5% dividend yield. and it trades over a million contracts per day, or -- i'm sorry, shares per day and you can even do a little hedging with some of the options, which is another thing i'd offer out there. lastly, the xlv, which, of course, just a piece of the s&p 500. this is up about 8.5%. you get about a 200 basis point boost over the s&p 500 return. and it is the health care and biotech part of the s&p 500. trades about 5 million a day and very liquid. so, these are just a few of the ones that i'd focus folks in on that want beta and they really can't duplicate on their own. this is very difficult. in fact, that r

bob pisani is on the ground at inside etfs in florida, the largest etf conference in the world.why investors are so hot for these thunder. bob? >> hello, melissa. exchange traded funds, or etfs are attracting a lot of assets now. stocks to bonds to commodities. you might be wondering, what is an etf? an exchange traded fund, or etf, is a fund that holds stocks, bonds or commodities. most etfs track indexes like the s&p 500. but you can invest in almost any asset class. tech stocks, industrial stocks, municipal bonds, japanese stocks, physical gold or silver. the big attraction is unlike mutual funds, etfs trade like stocks. they can be bought and sold during the trading day. etfs are also more tax efficient. and usually have lower costs than mutual funds. thanks to these advantages, investments in etfs have surged in the last few years. at the end of 2012 there were close to 1,300 funds in the u.s. with a combined value of $1.3 trillion. that's only about one-tenth of the money in mutual funds, but it's jumping quickly, up 25% last year. trading in etfs is growing fast as well.
