ethel may matthews, was the daughter of alabama sharecroppers. she arrived penniless in atlanta during the 1950s. she worked as a housekeeper. she lived in public housing and she later found her political voice in the welfare right movement during the 1960s. matthews and others like her, as she rose to -- they roads to challenge the second wave and others in the civil rights movement made it clear that the formal equality of a civil rights act of 1964 and the voting rights act of 1965 were not enough. they were not enough. matthews and others said because jim crow had left a legacy of racialized poverty. and, thus, ms. matthews and other women, mostly women, in the welfare rights movement waged protests for affordable housing and an adequate income and they were vocal critics of many politicians including the new black political class elected in the wake of the voting acts of 1965 saying again the right to vote alone was not enough if the representatives were not responsive. matthews and others lobbied for a responsive political structure for acc

ethel -- you are increasing it by more than 160 square feet. prior to the hearing, concerns were raised by neighbors concerning future development of the properties. i spoke with a representative and explained that currently they could develop their properties and did not see why a subdivision with a lot line adjustment -- they could continue to develop their properties. they expressed concern about future development, although there is no project proposed. i listened to the concerns. the project's sponsors were amenable to adding a condition requiring a variance for future construction. this is only the second variance i have heard that is now on appeal to this board. i believe the project was justified. all five findings were met. that is already in the decision letter. i will go to one -- to a point the appellant had with regards to the off-street parking. the claim is that there was parking provided at the rear of the lot, 260 mullen avenue. any parking in that rear yard would be illegal and we would issue a notice of violation and penalty.

guy, later who became very famous for having adopted, along with his wife, the two orphan sons of ethelerg, but that wasn't until the 1950s. he was a schoolteacher in the bronx who cared about social issues and cared about civil rights and saw a picture of a lynching in the paper one day, and he was one of these very creative guys who was just always writing poems and music and shows. and he just sat down and wrote a poem about this photograph that he saw, set it to music. it was performed in left-wing circles in new york city throughout the late 1930s, at rallies for the loyalists during the spanish civil war, you know, among sort of left-wing types at their bungalow colonies in the catskills or rural new jersey, wherever they went. it was sort of just a cult song in those circles, and somebody who was connected with the show at madison square garden, where the song was performed, was also running the entertainment at the new cafe society, which was the first integrated nightclub in america and happened to be where billie holiday was opening in early 1939. and a marriage of sorts was m
