ethiopia has a dismal record on media freedom. the latest series of arrests there is disturbing even by its standards. last weekend, three journalists and six bloggers were detained for, according to the prosecution, working with foreign human rights organizations and using social media to create instability in the country. one ngo, the new york based committee to protect journalits calls it a crackdown on freedom of expression. those arrested are members of an online forum, zone 9, after a section of a jail where political prisoners were held. it was formed by writers who felt the manystream media in ethiopia were unable to report on political oppression and social injustice. the government has used a vaguely worded antiterror law against media workers says they are not journalists. they were engaged in criminal acts and ethiopia doesn't take its orders from human rights groups. the case goes to trial later this month. turkey expelled another journalist and sentenced another to jail time after both reported critically on the gove

coming from a town in ethiopia, very nearby, they would walk 10 to 15 kilometers every day with no shoes on through the desert. the temperature was about 110 to 120 in the shade during their walk. they would come, and they would get their nutrition in the morning, and then they would stay sitting outside in the sun for the feeding that would happen in the afternoon. and then they would go home and... on saturdays we would give them a packet of food for sunday. well, after evaluating them and finding out that they had no medical complications that would necessitate medical care, i was about to discharge them, and i asked them, "what is it like on sunday for you?" and these two girls said to me that their food is distributed amongst the family. and because the family doesn't eat during the week, the family eats the food that they bring home on sunday. but they were very happy coming on the other days where they would get the soybean porridge. and i asked the older child if i were to discharge them from our program, would there be a way for them to get food in ethiopia? and she looked at me

such a rights violation in uganda, that we would protest when there's such a rights violation in ethiopia and so that's the debate that must happen. that is the thing that is happening around the world now. there are much bigger things than aid happening around the world. we have the struggle for the ideals of freedom and democracy happening in ukraine, happening in venezuela, happening to a degree not covered enough in the western media in ethiopia and in china. that's the big debate that is happening that is much bigger than foreign aid, much bigger than western foreign policy interests, and that's the debate that we should be having. so i will close by showing my own sentimental, idealistic slide by paraphrasing some very famous words. i think what needs to happen is that we hear resolve, development shall have a new birth of freedom and that government of the people, by the people and for the people shall not perish from the earth. thanks very much.
