tonight is eugene debs.n the white house briefing on wlaki.ath of anwar a >> our featured contender is eugene debs. at the turn of the 20th-century, a five time candidate for president on the socialist ticket, and the nation's most celebrated world war i protester. this footage captures eugene debs on his return home to terre haute, indiana. following his release from prison by warren harming -- warren harding from charges stemming from those war protest. tonight, we are in terre haute at his home and museum. let me introduce you to our two guests. ernest freeberg's book is called "democracy's prisoner." it has been 85 years since he died. why do we care about him? >> he was one of our most important labor leaders at a crucial time. conflict between labor and capital. more importantly, he was the central figure in the socialist movement at a time it was a viable growing part of the american political culture. >> does he have a lasting legacy? >> i think like many third- party candidates, he and his fellow so

eugene debs was a real hero there. they also needed to speak to trade unionists in chicago and milwaukee to radical bohemians in san francisco, to jewish garment workers on the lower east side. it was a real challenge to find a way to knit together people who all agree on some level that capitalism needed to change fundamentally. they were coming at this from very different positions. it took a while to build the apparatus. >> another election in 1908 which involved william jennings bryan. he began to understand some early marketing. he had some campaign tactics like the red train special and the red special ban. can you tell us a little more about that? >> 1908 was a critical year because of the ascendance of the popularity of the labor party -- the socialist party and the federation of labor and other labor unions. his message appealed to increasingly more people from a diverse amount of backgrounds. the red special would have been a good unifying symbol to use to unite what were very different groups of people who w

and eugene robinson, columnist for the washington post and an msnbc political analyst. thank you all for joining me tonight. andrea, this is scored by any measure as a victory for president obama's strategy in libya. he went out on a limb here at the start and took the position that they were going to have to move in libya. we have now a lot of republican videotape with a lot of embarrassing statements that do not square with where this situation is today. how do you grade the president's handling of this from start to today? >> well, i think that he has to be given good marks for this. he was criticized at first for not being in enough for so-called leading from behind, for letting british and french take the lead. but i think he properly assessed with this w a spread so thinly into two fighting wars already that to join the third and to take a leading role, and we did take an important role in the initial airstrikes, but then we began focusing more on refueling intelligence and predators strikes. which turned out to be absolutely critical as the civil war reached this

as i ask eugene about this. your reflections on mlk. share as well. >> i remember the day when dr. king was killed. i remember the reaction in my hometown of orangeburg, south carolina. what a blow it was. then, of course, the riots an the violence that followed all in 1968 a year in which everything happened. too much happened. >> what a year. >> you know, this is -- it is amazing to me. one of the sort of pinch yourself moments. that this monument is dedicated to dr. king today. i don't know if you've been down there, alex, to see it. one thing the cameras don't capture, i think, is the way the monument kind of opens to the tidal basin. opens to the water. there's a feeling of kind of serenity in this enclosed space that opens toward the water and faces, of course, the jefferson memorial as if it's a -- you know, so much of dr. king's work involved making the nation live up to the stirring words that thomas jefferson wrote in the declaration of independence. so it is a fitting space and a moving, i think in many ways, profound space.

eugene robinson, prize winning columnist for the "washington post." let's get the rumor mill out of the way. the acela corridor, which i like to call the media machine, likes to talk about this idea there's a growing movement of disgruntled democrats that would love to see a different nominee. well, we actually asked people and here's what they said when it came democrats about the president's remom nation, 73% in favor of it. at bill clinton's highest point in 1995 among democrats he got 67%. one thing about the president is he does have when it comes to sort of -- i think there's a difference between the liberal elite and the liberal grass roots. >> there is a difference. this was never real. you know, the chatter about democrats were going to dump oba obama. it was never going to happen, as unreal as the chatter about obama losing african-american support or losing this or that the. there is a difference between progressives or others being either disenchanted or disappointed and the biggest distance between that and saying -- he shouldn't be renom
