eugene, i know this is a very difficult time for a lot of folks.an you give us the latest on andrew's condition? >> as far as the information that we have received is that he's in a stable condition. most of the medical information is privileged to the next of kin. so we also are waiting in anticipating more information to come from the hospital. we -- we -- we are hurting at the sanctuary. in the sems that we've witnessed a lot of thing, and we're very sorry for what happened. we're just so sorry for the family to have to endure this and for andy to go through this. >> what did you see when you first arrived on the scene? >> i got the phone call from the sanction manager that said to me, listen, we need to invoke lethal force protocol in order to save andrew's life. at that point, i raced up to the vehicle, got to the scene, spotted the two chimpanzees. jumped out of the vehicle. i charged toward them with a handgun. fired two warning shots into the air. normally, this would chase them off. that might be in attack mode. they were highly motivated.

and eugene robinson an msnbc political analyst. kellen, let me start with you. the romney campaign put out a statement today about your reporting. they said quote, this is not accurate. governor romney left bain capital in february of 1999 to run the olympics and had no input on investments or management of companies after that point. what's your response to that statement? >> well, they're sticking to their party line that they've gone with all along now. so far they haven't disputed the factual information in the article. that's important to note. the documents say what they say and the romney campaign isn't disputing that. what they're disputing is the conclusions drawn by some folks in our article which suggests that, you know, it's hard to believe for many folks that romney held these titles. as you noted, continued to draw a paycheck as an executive. remained the sole owner of bain capital. and planned to return after running the olympics. yet he says he played no role in their investments during that period. that's what the folks seem to take issue with.

"the washington post" is becoming the source for outsourcing stories, huh, eugene?the outsourcing source. it seems to me the potential political gain for the president in this is limited by the fact that, as you said, he's talked about punishing companies that outsource or at least that offshore rather or at least not helping them with tax breaks but in fact hasn't done anything. and so it's the difference between the republicans pointing at him and saying, well, he hasn't done anything about it and him pointing at romney and saying but he's the outsourcer, he's the offshorer. so there is a difference there. there is probably a net benefit. but i think a small one to the president there because, as you said, he ain't done nothing. >> tom brokaw, there is some sign along the way that the bain attacks have had some impact. >> it's had some traction in the last six weeks or so obviously. they'll continue to try to define him as the rich guy that plays by a different set of rules from the rest of us. i don't know how much of a connection the average voter is going to ma
