eugene let me start with you, busy week for president biden. he was out there trying to sell not just the infrastructure plan but the america family plan. he had the cybersecurity issue with russia that's taking up a lot of his time. the unexpected assassination of a leader in haiti, and now new discussions of a resurgence in covid. what's your sense of how what the white house is prioritizing in these matters? >> infrastructure stays number one. the white house choose what they want, they go for that one first and keep that as focused as possibly as we can. and they take everything else as it comes. the russian with -- the russia ransomware attacks and president biden talking to putin. we've been asking for a briefing this entire week with the press secretary about that, what's going on, are they going to talk? and today, right before the press briefing, it got moved back. and every time we get pulled on hold we know something is gonna come out of that phone call. we so the white house is what they continue to learn, and they learned early on,

eugene, what details do we know about this meeting? what are your sources saying?that they are going to talk about voting rights, civil rights he wants to make clear, what he said in his inauguration he does think that racial equity is one of the key arts in his presidency there's only so much that a president can do he can use the bully pulpit. vice president harris is leading on this effort for this administration in all these creative ways they're working on, improving there there's not much they can do. >> what can the president do? >> well, one of our concerns is that the president used a bully pulpit of the white house, and his own pervasiveness and have an open discussion we cannot -- i think during her presidency there was the continues weakening he agree with eugene he won't have action steps, but that doesn't mean we won't have some to suggest to the president. >> and trying to talk about whether or not they should go around that 60-vote necessity to really deal with voting rights. you must remember that we've been talking about having this meeting for mo

eugene, talk to us about gop leader kevin mccarthy.mittee assignments from any republican who goes on to this panel. and also, do we have any sense yet as to whether he'll follow through on those threats and who he might pick for the gop side of this committee? >> i mean it's hard to say who he's going to pick. he has a couple ways he could go here. he could pick people who are kind of in the middle of the road, who might take this a little bit more seriously, but the sources i'm talking to on the hill what they expect is for him to pick people who are going to be a little bit more trumpy the best way to put it, push back on some of the things that are going to happen, and kind of continue this whitewashing that we've seen over the last few months. it's also one of those things, when it comes to whether or not he's going to pull liz cheney from any of her committees, he is being coy, as mccarthy wants to do and has been the last few months, and hasn't shown his cards just yet. it's hard to say. i think the one thing is that liz cheney

so, eugene, what is your sense of where we go from here in terms of the forces that ultimately showed i mean, while the military was doing this planning, we did have this march, we did have these people overrun the place. it did take hours for the national guard to show up. there were hours when the capitol was essentially under siege. people as we've seen in the photos were hanging from the balconies and sitting in desks and destroying things. we don't know that those forces have gone away, and, in fact, the -- some of those agenies like the fbi, for example, that apparently milley was worried about being taken other has warned that taking over is our greatest national security threat. so what our politics so polarized, how do we confront that challenge going forward? >> i feel like the only thing that we can do as members of the media is continue to report what actually happened. i think what we're seeing, the release of videos that can dispute the narrative that this was just a group of tourists have to increase so that those who are being fed misinformation actually have facts, an

. >> and i want to bring in eugene robinson of the "washington post."t whole idea. you know, strategically does it make sense to you? some people have said that there is a time, money that could be better spent elsewhere, this is just a show, they should be back in washington working on this. but where do you see this going and what do you make of the democratic strategy? >> well, if you really believe this is as important as amy klobuchar and other democrats say it is, of course this is what they should be doing. they should be shining a light on this issue in any way they can if it is an existential threat to our democracy. the question though is whether the prospects or the senate actually agreeing to do anything about the voter suppression that is taking place, and right now, those prospects are dim. we should be honest. unless manchin and sinema and perhaps others move on the question of what to do with the filibuster, there is no way that there are 60 votes in the senate for any sort of federal voting legislation. now, that was once the case with

. >> eugene, we know the president wants a huge victory on this issue.ep the house in line not only on the bipartisan bill but also on that key reconciliation bill that they're touting? >> yeah. i mean what the courthouse continues to say to us is the president is having these meetings. he's been to the senate for 36 years. he was the vice president for eight years and the emissary between the white house and congress. he has a lot -- he knows how to twist arms. much he knows how to get folks cares. and one of the things i'm hearing from sources, they're telling us that things that the white house officials are saying to these members of congress who may be waffling a little bit especially house progressives who are saying well, i want to make sure we have this $2.5 trillion bill set before i sign on to this bipartisan bill, what they're saying is do you really want to mess this up for all of us? that's something that i've been told white house officials have said to members of congress and their staff. saying this is an important time. what we do know i
