joining me is eugene robinson and jonathan alter. both are msnbc political analysts. what's doable from that list? >> well, i think a lot of it is doable. you know, he's throwing a lot of things against the wall to see what sticks. it's important to remember though that we're not going to move to that agenda right away because, you know, not to get too down in the weeds, but what they call the continuing resolution, which is basically the budget to keep the government open, is going to come up at the end of this month. so we have at least three more weeks of a lot of arguments about the sequester and about the larger budget issues. you saw that today the white house canceled all white house tours saying that it was the sequester that was to blame. that's really going to get the attention of congressmen because they use those tours for their constituents. but once we get into april and may, you're going to see the president shifting more to these other issues that are on his agenda. >> eugene, that's not too optimistic of a look forward from jonathan because, you know,

these are eugene robinson's words. if he had heard this about george bush, he would have gone ballistic. and to his credit, he says it makes no difference that the president making this chilling claim is barack obama. what's wrong is wrong. robinson goes on to say the moral and ethical questions posed by the advent of drone warfare are painfully complex. we had better start working out some answers because, as an administration spokesman told me recently, drone attacks are the new normal. in the ongoing strug against terrorist groups such as al qaeda, these attacks have become normal. they have become commonplace. they have become the rule rather than the exception. but at least eugene robinson is someone who is consistent in his application of criticism. he says he would have gone ballistic had george w. bush done exactly what president obama is doing, and his response is it makes no difference that the president making this chilling claim is barack obama. what's wrong is wrong. the question of when we get due process

joining me today to discuss this and so much more, msnbc political analyst eugene robinson and new yorker's john kennedy and buzz feed editor in chief ben smith. before we go to you guys. i want to go to our white house correspondent joining us now from the lawn of the white house, kristen wellker. a little impromptu press from the president. i think it was in market contrast to speaker boehner who was very quick at the press stakeout. what did you make of the fact that the president spent so much time explaining what he thought was going on and what he thought might happen vis-a-vis the sequester. >> a lot of public concern about what is about to happen. a lot of public confusion. but you're absolutely right. he did spend a fair amount of time answering reporters' questions. a couple things that stood out to me this afternoon, alex, first of all, no indication that this appears to be anything more than a photo-op. if you listen to the language that speaker boehner used and president obama used, the familiar talking points that they've been using. they took a hammer to each other. speaker b

. >> in today's "washington post," eugene robinson wrote this.nd mitt romney offered their vision. president obama offered his. and americans made their choice, rather emphatically." when you see the budget that paul ryan is putting out, does it show that he's or the republicans are in denial? is this budget proof of that? >> no. the fact that we still have a fiscal crisis shows that real steps have to be taken in the next few years. and i think there's a feeling, although they won't state it too publicly on the part of republicans, that the standard-bearer, governor romney in the last election, did not put these proposals out there in a consistent way that you need to do if you're going to persuade public opinion. so i think they're setting the groundwork for 2014. and one of the things you're going to see really hammered on in terms of medicare is that there's going to be absolutely no change in medicare for the next ten or so years. and after that, if you still want medicare, you can have it. if you want a private plan, you can have it. they'r

eugene robinson writing on what he calls ryan's make-believe budget, saying the new plan is even lessd in reality than the old one. if the gop is trying to rebrand itself, and change some of its messaging, isn't going back to the old tactics that the american people didn't support in a national election, wouldn't that be the wrong track? >> which gop faction are you talking about? you got the rubio, you got the mccain, you got him, standing out there by himself. if the speaker -- the republican speaker of the house of representatives ever had the nerve to tell a handful of people from the tea party, look, let the republicans do what they want, i'm through of doing what you want me to do, we will find you an enimty in terms of finding a certain number of democrats that can't afford a compromise, a certain number of republicans who can't afford a compromise, because they will not be re-elected, and we, as we have done in the past, will pass a decent budget. but the republican speaker cannot do this. why? he'd rather be speaker than allow the house of representatives to work his will. a
