eunice yoon joins us from shanghai where earlier she toke -- spoke to a key u.s. ceo who is bullish on china. >> right now i'm standing in front of the world's longest coffee bar it's no surprise it would be here in shanghai, outside of the united states, that is the market that starbucks is focused on for the future. as you mentioned there is a bit of a trade war going on, souring relations between the u.s. and china. so i asked the ceo, kevin johnson, about that and if he saw impact on the business >> starbucks has been in business for 47 years. we now have 29,000 stores in 78 countries. there's also something going on in the geopolitical situation. we learned to navy gaigate thos things it's not impacted our business and we're staying focused on things that we do well bringing a premium experience around all things coffee to customers. >> johnson said despite the trade dispute there's no reassessment of starbucks commitment to this country long-term. these days the company is focused on delivery. food delivery is huge in china back in august the company talked

eunice yoon joins us from beijing with more on the consumer outlook there good morning >> good morningkers here needed all the help they could get to stabilize growth consumers are holding back there are indications that the trade war, the broader economic slowdown are scaring consumers into saving rather than spending consumers had been delaying purchases on big ticket items like cars. sales in september dropped 11.6% from a year ago. smartphone sales have been softening all year with third quarter china shipments down 10% from a year ago. we spoke to one concerned consumer a corporate lawyer who said he was cutting back on his monthly salary by a quarter it doesn't bode well for foreign brands which tend to price higher in this market. this is what he said tef >> translator: as a veteran apple vanfan i would buy all th new releases each year this year i only got an iphone x x max. this year i switched to more domestic brands. >> if this consumption downgrade continues, there could be two outco outcomes one, policymakers here will have a bigger headachetrying to reach their own growth

eunice yoon is live for you in beijing with more on that story. >> thank you very much the question thathe u.s. business community has been asking today is what is the moment investigati motivation behind this investigation. chinese authorities said they uncovered massive evidence of anti compettiitive behavior by micron, as well as samsung and hynix. they have not provided any specifics at all and that is one of the reasons why so many people have been asking questions this is not the first time these companies have been investigated they dominate the d-ram market they have 95% of it. they have seen these investigations, but in china it's different because the p perception is when the chinese are pursuing a foreign company with an anti monopoly investigation, the process is not very transparent and you don't know what motivations are. that's raising questions among companies. in the middle of all of that there is this heightened sensitivity among american companies right now about what has been described as qualitative measures by the chinese. are they trying to take -- is this going to

eunice yo eunice yoon joins us now with more what type of products does mondelez want to bring to chinat >> there are just so many. you know, the trade war has dominated debate between the u.s. and china, but perhaps to better understand exactly what is at stake you should try a seaweed flavored oreo cookie i'm at the research lab of the american food giant mondelez this is the maker of the oreo cookie here at the lab they come up with all sorts of various flavors of the oreo to tailor to chinese tastes that means wasabe, seaweed or spicy chicken. mondelez is not really in the business of moving stuff in and out of the country instead it's localized its operations earlier today i spoke with the china chief who told me that localization has helped the company to be able to generate a tremendous amount of business despite the trade war. >> we are seeing as a company that is rooted in china. we like openness as a multinational. we like free trade as much as anyone i would not say it has influenced a lot we make and bake for china >> he says that china generates $1 billion in sales for the
