i have to tell you, i've been monitoring the live cameras around eureka and you see eureka on the maporth of san francisco. i did not see any significant waves developing. there were smaller waves. what i could see on the live cameras at the point at which this tsunami was supposed to be hitting there. that does not mean it does not build as it moves south perhaps towards san francisco. there are, as you said to, 5 million people under alert right now. governor gavin newsom and his press office put out a statement on x saying, "the governor briefed on the earthquakes help the coast of northern california and the resulting tsunami warning. governor newsom has now with state emergency officials and working to ensure californians are safe." they also said the state operations center has been activated to coordinate the response. these tsunami alerts went quickly as they tend to now on social media and straight to the text of a lot of residents in northern california and in the southern portion of oregon there. just as i mentioned just south of the border with oregon, review recap, as you

she's a first grade teacher at freshwater elementary in eureka. so thank you so much for being with us. this must h have been o scary, especially with all those little ones in your class. but i understand one of your aides got an alert. what happened then? so yeah, it was very scary. my aide, thankfully had an alert right before the earthquake started on her watch, and so she was able to tell everybody to drop cover hold right as we did. it started and it lasted a long time, especially for californians. i would say this was the longest, hardest one we felt in a while, and it was really scary. but the kids were able to stay calm and safely. we all safely evacuated to the field afterwards. now, is this something that you had practiced with those little kids before? because i mean, they're so little to have to go through something like that. we fortunately we did. they did an amazing job. we practiced one month ago, and it really came in handy today. but it was still very scary in the moment. just making sure that everybody was under a desk, which th

it was about 50 miles southwest of eureka. you can see it happened at 10:44am. the depth was about half a kilometer, which is a little over a 3rd of a mile. and if we take a look here, i want to draw your attention to not just where the quick quake happened, but you have 3 plates here, right? when you look at our tectonic plates, the gorda plate, the pacific plate and the north american plate. and because you have those 3 plates and you have movement that happens, they are rather rare earthquake prone area and they do get bigger quakes than you might see in other parts of california. but what happens when you get a quake that's offshore is that you get that chance of a tsunami because you've got those plates rubbing together, right? and that causes an underwater earthquake. and then what happens is you get this big push a vertical push of sea water and it's a very large amount of water that's displaced. so then it can generate a wave that can roll towards the shore. now, sometimes it can be a small wave. sometimes it can be a very dangerous, large wave. it just
