and a good morning to you on this christmas eve. i'm marcus washington, and i'm kira klapper filling in for laura garcia. we will get to that breaking news in just a moment. but first we begin with that rain and the partial collapse of the santa cruz wharf due to some incredibly large and powerful surf yesterday. the waves yesterday afternoon, demolishing about 150 yards of the farthest end of the pier, sending three workers into the water below. lifeguards were able to rescue them. the collapse happened in the middle of a large scale repair effort in that same area of the wharf, due to the previous storms that hit it, the wharf is now closed indefinitely. as for the powerful surf, you can see how the waves were pounding the nearby santa cruz harbor, even dislodging some of the boats docked there. one boat even overturned. the heavy surf is being tied to a drowning death at sunset state beach, where a man became trapped under debris prior to the wharf collapse. our bob redell will have more from santa cruz in our next half hour. i w

let me get you more details on this new year's eve. and also when rain returns in your microclimate forecast. and here it is tomorrow morning. i think the general rule, once you get away from the coast and the bay will certainly be widespread 30s. we're not expecting a lot of locations to really go below freezing at this point. i think we'll be at an average here of 37 in the tri-valley peninsula, 41 in the south bay at 39, also going to those upper 30s across the east bay and the north bay right here at 36. not going to happen with 30s in san francisco. that's just because the ocea in the bay helps to kind of insulate them a little bit. so they really have a hard time here in san francisco getting down below the 30s. nonetheless, it's going to be cold as we head through tomorrow. we got a nice flip here for the afternoon. we'll warm it up to the 50s and low 60s, some calm winds and we'll get in on some sunshine. 61 in milpitas, 60 in san jose over to the east bay, 56 vallejo, 57 pleasanton and 59 in hayward were in the 50s. half moon
