just generally. >> we are back with eva clayton . we asked you a lot about the behind the scenes and the informal networking. was if they're any's bordering -- sporting events that you could be tend -- attend? >> there might have been sporting a 10 -- events that i could attend. i took the opportunity to go to dinner are being invited out. i did do that and sometimes we got together and went out to. women who were part of the freshman class that came together. informally there was the opportunity for me to network with churches. i was at home during the time. my kids were mature and my husband was back home. much of my weekends were spent here but the opportunity would allow you to gather together even when we were waiting to vote for the formal dinners. unless i was attending, i must confess, i didn't go.>> were there any groups that were male only that you started to integrate? >> i don't know. i'm sure there might have been but i don't now. what i do know is the incident about the incident where the elevator where some male collea

that's just who eva clayton happened to be. and also the culture and the era in which i grew up in, that those of us who achieve, knew we had achieved in spite of resistance. in some cases because of the resistance. whatever you want to call it. and also as i indicated earlier, my mother instilled that in me, yes. and both my father and mother sacrificed. i had one brother. we were going to college, no question. but what they said, i don't want to waste our money and you need to do well. now, i wasn't an "a" student by any means, but i did do well. >> and you came to congress, so that must have made them very proud. >> my mother would be -- she wasn't living when i came, but when i was elected county commissioner she was and she was very proud of that. she was very proud of that. and interesting, as you mature, you begin to realize there is some reflection of what your parents did early in the school i went to because of my age and also segregation, we didn't have a lunchtime. i think kids carried food from home or wherever, bu

mattasniewski: i am withewski here congresswoman eva clayton to talk about her time in congress. thank you for being here. ms. clayton: i'm delighted to be here. mr. wasniewski: i thought we would talk about the origins of your interest in politics to start. first off, when you were young, i'm curious to know, did you have any female role you looked up to? who were they? what do you to them? ms. clayton: the first female .odel was my mother she was a person who wanted the best for her daughter. as i grew older and recognize -- contribution of certain the high school where i went, a small presbyterian high school, and lucy craft lane was her name. i admiredew her, but knowing of her. i would say the model for high school and others was neither -- it was out of sweitzer. i wanted to be a doctor. -- it was our sweitzer. i want to be a doctor. it was a little arrogant to think i could be like albert schweitzer, who i never knew either. also was motivation for me wanting to be a doctor was a classmate who had polio. i thought i could be a doctor and heal her. , and asoked for someone g

we will hear from former congresswoman sue myrick and eva clayton as they recall their political careers and examine the role of women in politics. first we sit down with the story and nancy wisniewski and kathleen johnson to talk with us about the interviews with women in congress. >>> why did you undertake this project? >> well, the impetus was centennial of the election of jeannette rankin, the first woman to serve in congress. she was elected in november of 1916. she was seated on april 2, 1917. it was a special section -- session of congress. by woodrow wilson when he asked for a declaration of war with germany. it was a momentous time. >> that was the impetus, how did you decide that you wanted to interview former congresswoman? we thought it was the best way to look at the changes in the role of women in congress. we've been doing this since 2004. what better way to learn about women than the people who served. we interviewed staff as well. some of the stories that we learned have been wonderful to learn more about. >> yes, to date we have done about 40 interviews, 30 of which are
