evan, does this mean charges are definitely coming or have already come against assange?w where we are right now? >> well, we don't know, but i think all signs point to the fact that there are existing charges, and that's how this mistake was made. i think just certainly as in the hours last night as we were trying to figure this out, it amerged that is the most likely thing that has happened here. but it's a very interesting arc that's happened with the case. look, under the obama administration, they looked into this. eric holder, the attorney general, i think they wanted to look into a way to file charges against wikileaks and assange, and they arrived at the fact that it's difficult to do that if you're not going to prosecute newspapers, for instance, for publishing leaked information. i think what has happened is the idea that the trump administration has taken a new look at this, and has arrived at a different standard. i think they're looking at assange as less of a publisher and more of an actual participant in some of the hacking. especially with some of the hack

i can already see evan bayh kind of like yeah, right. tell me, do you agree or just look at the numbers and tell us what you think. >> i think it would be a surprise if the republicans hold but i think they can. it depends on obviously virginia's a big one. there's a lot of close races in iowa, pennsylvania and other states. i'll stick with the vice president and say the republicans win it on an extra point and the democrats doink the left upright and republicans control by one. liz: governor bayh, your wild pitch prediction on anything. you name it, anything. >> wild prediction? well, i'd say if it happens to be a good democratic night, the smart money would say the republicans may pick up one seat, maybe two, but if you do get a blue wave rolling and the democrats hold indiana and missouri in particular, and carry nevada and arizona, my wild prediction would be look at mississippi, because if neither candidate gets 50% control of the senate will be decided in early december in a special runoff in mississippi. liz: he's already pushing

evan, let me start with you. we're talking about the cia here.s different levels of confidence when it reports on something and they've said that they have high confidence about this. what's in it for the president in again -- this is now not the first time he's done this, but again refusing to agree with or accept the conclusion of our intelligence agencies. >> well, look, i think it's twofold, ali. first of all, president trump does have long-standing conflicts of interest relating to saudi arabia. he's done millions of dollars of real estate deals with the saudi arabian government. he's pursued projects even during the last campaign, the presidential campaign, in which he was of course a candidate, he was pursuing business opportunities in saudi arabia even then. and even this year the saudi arabian government has spent significant amounts of money in his hotels in the united states. so there's a clear conflict of interest. and i think, you know, our founders put into the constitution a prohibition on our governments receiving payments or gift

and evan perez, you covered this for us. what is the firing of jeff sessions mean as far as the russia probe is concerned? >> i think there are some real questions, wolf, as to what happens to the investigation. obviously, matt whitaker has made clear his points of view, that mueller has gone beyond his charge, gone outside the lines of what he was supposed to be doing. we know he's written these comments, he's made these comments in an op-ed here at cnn and also in comments here on the air at cnn. and so it does raise the question of whether or not matt whitaker should be the person who is in charge of this investigation. this is something, obviously, the justice department's ethics officials are going to have to review and see whether or not the appearance of conflict is enough to see whether matt whitaker needs to recuse himself. it is clear, the president deliberately chose somebody who he already knows has some strong opinions about the mueller investigation. >> exactly. he's made his feelings pretty clear. and it's har

that didn't exist yesterday. >> evan perez is getting new information for us. what are you learning? >> reporter: i think one of the big questions, the panelists have been making this point a little bit over and over, but i do think we need to pause and think about this, the fact that matt whitaker has been chosen by the president to oversee this investigation and given his comments, we have to really take it seriously that matt whitaker was chosen for a reason. we don't know what he's going to do but certainly his public comments about the investigation, about starving it of resources and trying to find a way to end it i think need to be front and center as we discuss this in the next few days and in the coming weeks. matt whitaker is somebody who is the chief of staff for the attorney general, but just a couple weeks ago when there was a whole drama about rod rosenstein and whether he might be fired or pushed out, whitaker it was at the center of all of that drama. he spoke to the president, as a matter of fact, before that happened. so we don't know all of t

evan, thank you very much. to bring in our correspondents and analysts to talk about all that has happened here so far and the drama that is clearly unfolding as a result of the mueller investigation back in the united states. the white house, michelle said that the mueller probe is hurting the u.s. relationship dramatically with russia right now. and do you get a sense that's hanging over this summit? >> of course it is. but what else has affected the u.s./russia relationship lately? maybe the fact that vladimir putin has been implicated in murders and attempted murders on foreign soil? maybe russia taking over part of ukraine? continuing war there? there are lots of things that have affected the relationship. so to say that a legitimate u.s. investigation that has yielded dozens of indictments so far, i don't really see how that is a problem. but it is a problem for donald trump, certainly it affects his mood. every meeting he has, everyone knows what's going on back home. and there's uncertainty, of course,
