so let's go straight to our senior justice correspondent evan perez. he was in the courthouse. evan, i mean, this was something no one saw coming today, that the mueller folks had recommended zero jail time. what happened? >> no, it was a stunner, brooke. you know, michael flynn came to court today and he had every reason to expect he was going to walk out with no prison time, again maybe facing a fine and some probation essentially. instead he walked out of court today feeling probably that he narrowly escaped being locked up by this judge. this is a judge who did not take kindly to a court filing that was filed by michael flynn's lawyers in the past few days in which they sort of raised some questions about whether or not mike flynn believes he was tricked into making false statements to the fbi back in january of 2017. it was clear today the judge really wanted to hone in on that and spent probably half an hour just going through that and making sure that michael flynn indeed is sorry for deceiving the fbi and that he wanted to plead guilty today. he repeatedly asked mike fl

evan, explain this part of the document with the acting u.s. attorney for the southern district saying that cohen is not being cooperative. what is he suggesting? >> that's right, jake. part of -- part of the document here says that cohen determined not to be fully cooperative with the u.s. attorney's office in new york. according to them, he -- cohen specifically declined to be debriefed on other uncharged criminal conduct. so they were trying to get him to cooperate on other parts of the investigation they still have ongoing. so beyond the stuff related to campaign finance that we already know he has admitted, he basically decided that he didn't want to cooperate beyond that. and so for that reason, the u.s. attorney's office says that michael cohen's description of his cooperation was, quote, overstated in some respects and incomplete in some others. they also mention that, for instance, as you know, michael cohen has been meeting not only with prosecutors from the manhattan u.s. attorney's office, with the special counsel's office, but also

i want to talk to evan perez who was inside the courtroom.s the judge was concerned about flynn's lawyers's argument and the circumstances surrounding the fbi interview what was the context surrounding that? >> we talked about this when the defense filing was made. all you needed was two sentences. one said we agree with zero time in prison. secondly, here are the recommendation letters. you provide a recommendation letter and people saying how good you are and something for the judge to consider and say thank you, your honor, i'm done. instead what the defense did was file a bunch of stuff that had nothing to do with pleading guilty. it raised concerns. it raised questions in our minds certainly that what they were trying to say was that flynn was tricked into making those false statements to the fbi. you heard that from the judge. the judge said it raised concern in his mind as to what exactly flynn was saying. was he tricked into this and was he not really pleading guilty? was he not taking full responsibility and one of the things he did

you know, evan, all of this is happening a day after the president's first national security adviser,ichael flynn, he revealed he's been cooperating with the mueller team a lot longer than previously known. what does it say to you? >> look, it does say that this is one reason why the mueller prosecutors have said that they don't think he deserves any prison time. they talked about more than 62 hours he has spent with the prosecutors. we don't know exactly what he has provided, but just in the last few minutes, wolf, the judge over seeing the case just unsealed an order. apparently the sentencing memo we saw last week, there were three versions of it. there's one version that even michael flynn and his lawyers cannot see. so there is information contained in that, that this is information provided to the judge to sort of describe what kind of help michael flynn has provided to the prosecutors, but they don't want michael flynn to even know. there's a lot of times that these cooperators come in, wolf, and they tell stuff that even they don't know how important it is, that prosecutors kn

cnn senior justice correspondent, evan perez is with us.ef national security correspondent, jim sciutto, is working the story for us, as well. evan, manafort's attorneys can't say whether he lied or not. how significant is that? >> well, the significance of this, wolf, is that we may have to wait until january to find out exactly what these lies -- the alleged lies that prosecutors say that paul manafort told even during the time he was supposed to be cooperating in this investigation. it means we may yet find out what the nature of these lies are and we may yet find out what exactly -- perhaps some more clues of what robert mueller has found in this investigation. keep in mind, paul manafort is facing ten years in this federal court here, and the -- his legal team is trying to decide whether or not admitting those lies really makes a difference in that sentence. and, of course, wolf, the big elephant in the room is whether or not paul manafort still gets a pardon from the president. as you remember, the president mentioned that is still on

numerous redactions here, evan.ny ideas about what will could be covered there? >> you know, i hate to speculate about something like that. i don't know. there could be a myriad of things, but i'll say this, in addition to susan's comments which i agree with, flynn was yes, an advisor to trump and he was a close friend. he became a close friend to trump and to jared kushner. that's all right. that makes him extremely significant both during the campaign and then after the campaign while he was with the transition and then the administration. but one thing that i think is maybe undervalued or underplayed a bit is that let's recall that flynn was an intelligence officer. he was a trained, talented and then became a senior u.s. intelligence officer. what the russians did to us was an intelligence operation. it was an intelligence attack on the core of our democracy. and that's why what flynn did in supporting a candidate who the russians were helping through this operation so egregious. most of the national security co
