john harwood and evan perez join me now. john, first to you.ean, it's already unusual for the president to have family members working for him so closely, but now possible pardons for them. what are we learning? >> well, look, it's also unusual, jim, for a president and people -- so many people close to him to either have engaged insomuch criminal conduct or been investigated for potential criminal conduct. so a whole lot of people around the president have been convicted or pled guilty or are facing felony charges. so everyone is aware that there are seven weeks left in this presidency and seven weeks left for president trump to possess that ultimate pardon power to clear people. now, the question is how does he use it? he's already used it for mike flynn who had pled guilty to a felony for lying to the fbi related to his contacts with russia. paul manafort is another possibility, roger stone is a possibility, but you've also got his children, donald trump jr. of course was involved in the exchanges -- information exchanges, meetings with russ

evan has more now on what happened. evan? >> that's right, frank. fidel padilla made his first court appearance this afternoon since being arrested in this very disturbing case. now, he didn't enter a plea, but he faces one count of raping an unconscious person. a judge ordered padilla to remain in custody without bail, at least until his next court appearance on december 29th. now, if you remember, padilla it was arrested last week after witnesses intervened on a man raping an unconscious woman at a bus stop on market street near the westfield mall in san francisco. the witnesses were on a passing muni bus. they got off and rushed to help the woman and called 911. the perpetrator disappeared into a nearby neighborhood and police circulated surveillance images and then arrested him in the tenderloin on thursday. now, i reached out to pa tia's court appointed attorney. he declined to comment. >> evan, do we know anything more at all about the suspect? >> well, we know that he is from livermore and has a long rap she had includes arrests for drugs and

professor evans, this question from dorothy, who wonders if the vaccine being given at present will be do not know for certain. it is quite likely that it will. the vaccines have been trialled with a number of variants, effectively. not deliberately, just because the virus mutates just by chance all the time. and so it will have been effective against a number of variants. there are good reasons to say that the vaccine is likely to at least reduce the severity of any illness that someone has due to the new variant, and it may prevent it in the same way. but we simply do not yet know. we will know that through two methods. we will know it through people looking at the virus in the lab and looking at how the vaccine deals with that virus. and secondly, because we have already vaccinated a very large number of people, it is in the hundreds of thousands already, we are going to be able to track what has happened to those people and see whether they get covid. and so, during january, we will know the answer to the question. as soon as that? well, that will be really valuable data, isn't it?

start with you, evan, on bill barr.ou have been covering it, one of president trump's biggest defenders and allies since he joined this administration. you were in the room questioning barr. now that barr is on the way out? is he acting differently? certainly seems so. >> it is a big difference. we have seen reluctance by the attorney general in the last 22 months to show any kind of daylight between him and the president, no matter what the president said, no matter how nutty some twitter postings that the president has made. the attorney general tries to figure out a way to make it true. today, we saw the opposite of that. we saw the attorney general seem to welcome the chance to put distance between him and the president on the question of whether there should be special counsel to investigate these allegations of vote fraud. the attorney general says as you heard in joe johns' piece said i don't see it. he also said he didn't see any reason to appoint special counsel to investigate hunter biden, son of joe biden, an

evan, what are you hearing? >> well, anderson, the fbi and the atf are sending in resources to help investigate what's clearly now a vehicle bomb that happened this morning. as you pointed out earlier with your interview with a witness, you know, the timeline is rather strange. you start hearing these reports of gunshots. we don't know whether they're actual gunshots but we know that people heard what they thought were gunshots and started reporting this to 911. the focus now for investigators is to try to figure out whether that was part of the target, were they trying to draw first responders and was that part of the plan here or was it another target, perhaps one of the buildings that were badly damaged. one of the buildings you can see in some of the pictures is an at&t exchange building which is why some of the telecommunications and natasha's signal is having trouble, because there's been damage to the at&t infrastructure in downtown nashville. at this point, anderson, we know the atf is bringing in the na

evan, first to you. what statement is the president making tonight with this?e president is saying repeatedly that essentially special counsel robert mueller's investigation over reached. he called it a hoax which is a word he's used to describe this investigation since the beginning, kate. one of the things when you step back and look, especially at the two russia investigation figures here, paul manafort and roger stone, the president is essentially rewarding these two men for refusing to cooperate with prosecutors. in the case of paul manafort, according to the mueller report, he spoke to another witness, rick gates, and said he had conversations with the president's lawyers and had been told that they were going to be taken care of. in the end, that's one of the reasons why prosecutors said that, even though he signed a plea agreement, he ended up not providing full cooperation during that. as for roger stone, he went to -- he was sentenced to prison for lying on behalf of the president, to protect the president. that's what the court said. so both men esse

so, evan, welcome aboard as a cnn contributor.s a biden biographer, what is the president-elect's media diet? >> thanks, brian. great to be with you. look, the president-elect's media diet is what we would call the classics. relies on things like "the new york times," "the washington post," "the wall street journal." he reads some of the economist and "the new yorker." a lot of it in print. he also relies on apple news to help him get headlines from other reputable media sources. what he is not doing is reading things like newsmax, not watching one america news network. he pays attention to the columnists. relying on people like tom friedmann who we will hear from in a second. one thing i know from experience that's interesting is he doesn't parse every word that is written about him. he doesn't pay all that much attention to it. with one exception. you go back to 1988, it was a great classic portrait written of him by richard ben cramer in the book "what it takes" that was in the all together flattering. he gave a eulogy at his f

and i think evan got it exactly right. which is, the president used his pardon power during the investigation, in order to thwart cooperation. in other words, for people who are thinking they should cooperate with us because, otherwise, they might spend a long time in jail. this president was saying, not so fast because if you hold fast and you don't do what michael cohen did, you will get a pardon. and he's made good on that promise. and if you think about this from a big-picture perspective, what he's really doing is setting incredibly bad example for the presidency because it basically means, how do you go about holding any president to account if the pardon power is going to be used to basically be a get-out-of-jail-free card for anyone who would cooperate with an investigation into the president? >> and just one, last question on this point. you had never really witnessed or experienced anything like this before, in the process of prosecuting and working with paul manafort, this was a huge obstacle for you. >> absolut

cnn's evan perez joins us live. what are you learning, evan? >> reporter: john durham is now a special counsel, essentially the same thing that robert mueller was during president trump's presidency. what this means is that come january and joe biden takes office, john durham will continue doing his investigation. as you said, he is a u.s. attorney. traditionally what happens is all u.s. attorneys leave their positions and joe biden is able to pick a u.s. attorney in connecticut which is where john durham is based. what this means is that the durham investigation which began earlier this year is going to continue probably for another year, well into the biden presidency looking into whether or not there were any laws broken in the beginnings of the early parts of the trump russia investigation back in 2016. jake? >> can president-elect biden fire a special counsel when he becomes president? >> he can. but, of course, this is why this is a bit of a political grenade that bill barr has left behind for the incoming president. we don't -- unlike do
