. >> cnn's evan mcmorris-santoro is following the story. he's joining us live. evan, what else have you learned at this hour? >> as you mentioned, this is an ongoing story. one of the scariest and saddest parts is victims are still being identified. just in the last hour, the houston office of emergency management has announced a hot line for people to call if they're missing people and trying to find people who were at that astroworld festival when this tragedy struck. there's a lot to learn about what happened. we don't know exactly what happened. but what the early indications are is this a story about crowd control failing and what can happen when a large group of people gets out of control. authorities say around 50,000 people were attending the astroworld festival at the nrg stadium complex in houston last night. there was some kind of crowd surge that led to this mass number of casualties. the fire chief took us through it earlier on cnn. >> the crowd, for whatever reason, began to push and surge towards the front of the stage, or towards the stage, which

cnn's evan mcmorris is following the story. he joins us live. evan, it's good to see you this morning. help us understand what's going on. >> this is an ongoing story, so i'm going to refer to my notes as i talk to you about it. we have a lot to learn about what happened, but we do know this is a tragedy that appears to be about crowd control and about what happens when a large group of people wants to go in one direction at one time. this is supposed to be a celebration of houston by one of its most prominent sons, but instead what we're seeing is 50,000 people were in attendance last night, according to authorities, at nrg park, a stadium complex in houston, which is used to be the home of the astroworld/six flags park, which is what the name is event after. authorities say there was some kind of crowd surge which led to the large number of casualties. 20 people taken to the hospital, some with cardiac arrest, some were children, as we heard from authorities earlier today, and of course that horrible number you mentioned, eight dead in this inc

cnn's evan mcmorris-santoro covering the story for us joins me now. again, great reporting on that. saw the abuse that kelsey, chris, and the family faced. what is next for them? >> in addition to getting a new house, which they're excited to do and move somewhere where people in town don't know where they live, kelsey says she's going to keep fighting for these issues herself. she's not on the school board anymore, but she says she's not going to let these bullies win and keep fighting, which i think is very inspiring. >> we've been watching all of these arguments and this violence. you can call it madness at these school board meetings over everything from crt to mask mandates and on and on. what are these debates in particular, these school board debates in particular -- why does it bring out these kinds of reactions in people? >> that's why i wanted to do the story in the first place. kelsey says we need to put a flag in this year. we need to remember what this was like because this is something new, she says. what's happening right now is parents are being told that people who
