evan mcmullen is a former cia officer for the house republican conference. he left that position last year to run as an independent candidate for president. good to see you again. thank you for joining us. >> i was reading your op-ed. something stood out to me, a line you wrote to characterize what you think republicans in the house and the senate should be doing. up said that the support for donald trump -- president trump's disturbing russian connections present an acute danger to american national security. republican leaders in congress now bare the most responsibility for holding the president accountable in protecting the nation. what do you mean -- i know what you mean by it but what do you think they should do about that? >> well, there needs to be an investigation. that investigation right now is said to be happening in the senate intel committee. i'm not convinced that that's sufficient, i think the senate intel committee already has a lot of work on its plate and it has limited resources and i'm not convinced that the republicans are willing to ho

unhappy republicans, although he did not ultimately take the state from donald trump, i think evan mcmullen is the future of where utah is going, centrist republicans who are really revolted by donald trump during the campaign, and we are seeing a lot of them now that are still unhappy. and i think he has a lead in the supporters. >> jon: we just got the two-minute warning of the press conference so we could be interrupting our news segment. this is a district, jason chaffetz won his district by 47%. he is a very popular legislator there. it just seems that crowd was not necessarily representative of the people who elected him. >> share, does not seem like the congressman is really at serious risk of not being reelected. his challenge will be that he has colleagues in the republican caucus who are more vulnerable. the real question for a lot of these members is going to be figuring out what percentage of this is organized liberal activists who are never going to vote for these folks in the first place, may not even live in a district and look at something more organic peer when the tea part

and joining me now is evan mcmullen, and howard dean. governor dean, your thoughts on the ruling? >> i think the ruling, i'm not a lawyer, but i think it made a lot of sense. it was pretty clear from the beginning because of what the president had said on the campaign aiming to be a ban of muslims. rudy giuliani basically testified to that on television so it's hard to see how the judges could have come up with a different conclusion. the other thing that was very powerful about this, this is the fourth -- four chunlgs, two republicans and two democrats and clearly not a political verdict. this is a judicial verdict and the rule of law and what this country is about. >> evan, i wonder if you could speak to the security part which is alluded to in the judgment. again, as we emphasized, this is not a final conclusion on whether the ban is good for national security or whether it is constitutional. it's a procedural step but within that process there's been as we have showed on the air extensive discussion and your view on that part and whether the process which is getting a lot of a
