we are talking to evan perez.hanges for marijuana businesses. there is a lot of people relieved. >> yeah, it brings a lot of businesses out of the shadows. they don't like this. i talked to the dispensary owners and here in washington they had to go around from place to place, trying to get a bank to do their business for them and take deposits and let them open a checking account. until today, that's been essentially illegal for the banks. they can get prosecuted for money laundering. this helps make it at least a little more clear where these banks can accept these deposits and help bring the businesses out of the cash only business which was a big concern for the justice department. >> oh, yeah. law enforcement and you name it. evan perez, thanks so much. >> the nsa said edward snowden did have help obtaining the government secrets that he leaked to the world. it was inside help that apparently unwittingly --. >> who actually helped edward snowden? >> according to a memo now sent from the nsa to members of cong

evan perez is following the story. evan, obviously it's incredibly specific. you've been working your sources. how serious is the threat? >> it's very specific and very serious threat. this is not every day you hear from the homeland security department asking airlines to be on the lookout for possible explosives in toothpaste or makeup containers. obviously for years we've been putting our toiletries in small bags. in russia they've banned it. what has happened today is the homeland security department says this could be an issue so they've asked the airlines to be on the lookout for it, erin. >> to your point, we talked about liquids. i'm thinking people think that you realize that toothpaste, at least in most airports i've been in, you don't have to have it in the liquids bag. that might be one reason why they would target that. what flights are they the most worried about? >> one of the things i think they're most worried about is flights from europe and neighboring countries going into russia. there are not many flights coming from the united states excep

joining me now is cnn justice correspondent, evan perez. and usually don't get the numbers to support the claim that there is a lot of sex trafficking around the super bowl and big sporting events. but this would refute that, wouldn't it? >> right. this is a big problem, ashleigh. and in this case, we -- ahead of time, a few days ago, we were on the air talking about this. the fbi told us they were going to mount this operation. they were already working on some of this -- some of these cases. and now we see the result of it. they say that the kids that they were -- they have managed to rescue are aged 13-17. which is a very shocking. some of them were high school kids who had been reporting missing by their parents. so again, this is something that they have been working on. they -- these are kids apparently that were found in new jersey, new york and connecticut. they were working with the authorities there to try to recover some of these kids and try to put them back with their families. >> and that's the next question. can they? some of

our justice correspondent evan perez now from washington. what's the bank accuse offhand doing?of helping customers hide assets overseas. the government has been on this crack down on offshore banking hiding overseas several years. even as the government has been cracking down on this, according to prosecutors, there were bankers helping customers move money out of certain banks already under scrutiny and trying to get it to other places to hide it from the irs. we have documents from court dock that have prosecutors alleging you have prosecutors hiding money in nylon pantihose to transport it from the united states to get it to their swiss bank accounts. some were buying gold bars and stashing them in the credit swiss safety deposit boxes. all kinds of methods to hide their money from uncle sam. >> very interesting. the investigation has been going on for years. what's taken so long? >> well you know that's a good question. next week there's a hearing in the senate. i'm sure that's the big question for the justice department. you've been work on this so many years, you have 14

cnn's evan perez covering the story. washington is covering this. they know anything we don't know, evan? >> reporter: the fbi, atf, local authorities in tennessee are all in on this. and right now there's still a lot of mystery as to what exactly happened here, why this couple was targeted. they do believe these two were targeted. they have ruled out any accidental blast from anything of the house. we know that the attorney's name is john setser, retired bankruptcy lawyer in lebanon, tennessee. we are told by sources, new information at this hour, they have recovered a note that may -- may have been attached to the package. now, they're going through the house today to try to catalog everything. the blast was so powerful, it extended almost through the entire house. knocked out the windows. and so one of the things they're doing today is check to make sure there's some labels on the ground, for instance. they're going to make sure to see whether or not, perhaps, that was attached to this package or whether it was perhaps a package that came earlier

justice reporter, evan perez, joins me live now from washington. know, evan, when i heard this the first thing as a consume e i thought, whew, finally somebody on my side. but then i thought through this more and there are plenty of reasons why this is also maybe perhaps not the greatest idea. law enforcement could be overwhelmed by cases all of a sudden. not only that, but investigation might be harder. actually just blow the lid off, helping people to find these guys. and also this could be a big hit to some of the companies who all of a sudden have to do this. there have to be lots of reasons why and why not. and how is congress going to chew on that? >> well, that's right, ashleigh. there are over 600 of these types of breeches in the most recent year that there are statistics for. so it just goes to show you how extensive this problem is, and how big -- how big of an issue it is for law enforcement. congress has been looking at this issue now for about seven years. and it's been -- never really gone anywhere. in part because you have the retail

actually, let's go to evan perez on foent with us now. evan what do you know about mr. holder's speech tonight, and why tonight? >> well, hi, fredricka. the attorney general is doing a speech in new york with the human rights campaign, which is a group that has been obviously working on the same-sex marriage issue for some years, and the attorney general is saying that he plans to, on monday, the justice department plans to adopt new policies that would extend federal recognition of gay marriages, of same-sex marriages, in matters such as bankruptcies, visitation for prisoners. even in cases where, for example, right now if you're married, you don't have to -- you have the right to refuse to give testimony to incriminate your spouse, which is a right that a lot of -- you know, heterosexual couples already have. now that's now going to be extended to same-sex marriages as well. this is a big, a big announcement. it obviously affects millions of people, and it's something that the justice department has been working on for several months in light of the fact that the supr

i want to bring in our justice reporter evan perez on this. evan, what's this warning about?e homeland security department is warning airlines to be on the lookout for possible explosives hidden inside shoes. now, this all comes apparently from intelligence that has been showing up in the last few weeks that indicates there are some terror groups working on new designs for shoe bombs. as you know, this has been a scare before and a concern before, which is why as you mentioned we have to take our shoes off at the airport a lot. and so, you know, there's no specific threat right now, no plot in mind that people know about. but they're doing this out of an abundance of caution to warn the airlines to be on the lookout for this. so for flights coming into the united states, this is not for flights inside the united states but for flights coming from overseas into the united states you might see additional procedures at the airports and passengers might see some additional searches. but it's not clear that there's any anything per se that the authorities believe is imminent or an

our justice reporter evan perez joins us now with the information. evan, what can you tell us?the department of homeland security is clearly worried. the intelligence is showing there are certain activities that clearly is causing some worry about the safety of flights going into russia. so they've issued this directive to airlines traveling into russia to be on the lookout for toothpaste tubes, cosmetic cases, the possibility that the bomb components that could be used to, you know, explode -- to explode a bomb on an airplane. so it's something that they're clearly worried about. it's not anything specific to the u.s. per se. there's no concern about something going on here. it's more something directed at russia, with the olympic games about to get started. >> the director of the national counterterrorism center testified before congress earlier this week and he said when asked about threats to the olympic games said there were a number of different threats of varying degrees of credibility that they were monitoring. presumably this probably was one of them and they obviously

let's go to our justice reporter evan perez joining us right now. what else do we know about the attorney general's condition, evan? >> well, wolf, he was in his normal morning meeting at 9:30 this morning with some of his top staff when he complain about feeling faint and shortness of breath. he excused himself of the meeting, went next door to his regular office. and that's when his fbi security detail insisted that he go to the hospital. they called an ambulance. he was taken by ambulance to washington medstar hospital. i'm told by someone who was there that he was joking with some of the emts as he was being rushed to the hospital. and he is now in the hospital. he's resting comfortably. he's joking, talking to his doctors. so it appears whatever it was he's now in good shape. right now we don't know exactly what caused this, just that he complained of some faintness and some shortness of breath. >> and he's generally was regarded as pretty good condition, not overweight, tall and seemed to be just fine. so let's hope it's nothing serious. and yo

cnn justice reporter evan perez is with us by phone now. an, i'm reading about this, and he just said that on monday, the justice department will issue a memo. how did all this happen? >> well, victor, this is all part of the fall out from the defense of marriage act being overturned last year by the supreme court. the justice department has been giving legal advice to various parts of the government on how they need to change their policies, to fit in with that ruling. the irs now allows same-sex couples to file as joint returns, as married couples. the military is now offering benefits to same-sex spouses in the military. and so now this is going to extend this to all parts of the legal system of the united states, the federal legal system of the united states, i should say. it does not affect states that don't recognize same-sex marriages. it doesn't change their laws. and so in state courts and in state matters, it won't affect those. but there's a large part of the country, obviously, that will be affected. everything, as you mentioned,

let's get the latest from our justice correspondent evan perez on the story in washington. evan, what are you learning? >> wolf, this is a very big alert that just went out to airlines that are flying in to russia. this is not something that they're concerned about being directed here in the u.s., but as you mentioned the olympics getting under way on friday, they're very concerned about airliners that are flying into russia and the concern is about the possibility of explosives being hidden inside toothpaste tubes and cosmetic tubes and about whether or not that could be used to detonate a bomb on board airliners. now, this is obviously something that has been a concern with law enforcement and with airline security experts for some time. as you know, every time we travel, we now have to put our liquids into small containers before we put them on board. but this is a very extraordinary thing to be issuing this very big alert right ahead of the olympics. now, dhs sent us a statement that they wanted us to be aware of. they said out of an abundance of caution, dhs regularly s
